| NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez will start the New York Yankees' biggest game of the year on the bench. After being pinch hit for in Games 3 and 4 against the Baltimore Orioles, the $275 million third baseman was removed from the starting lineup for Game 5 on Friday. Eric Chavez is set to start at third base, while Game 3 star Raul Ibanez will be the designated hitter in the winner-take-all series finale. "It is difficult. He has meant a lot to the organization, the game of baseball over the years," manager Joe Girardi said. "And he has been

Comments: As 57-year-old Ben Hogan said after his abortive return to competition in 1970 as he walked off Jimmy Demaret's Champion Golf Club Cypress Creek Course (the site of the 1969 U.S. Open), "Don't ever get old."
It appears that this great ballplayer has just about reached the end of the road.

Oh, no, the Yanks might win. A-Roid will probably make the Hall of Fame, but a bigger fool in a major league uniform will be hard to find.

Agree. Let's see if Alex can focus in the off year and get back. He slacked too much in the off season. Jeter'd be a good model for him to follow. I don't think Alex is done quite yet. His post season play for the Yanks has not been good anyway. And if they win today, there's even time for an immaculate redemption.

Maybe all those years of roids have taken their toll on A-Roid and he's physically breaking down a bit prematurely...

TAMPA — Federal and local officials have released little information Tuesday on the Hakken family, which reportedly was in Cuba on Monday. But CNN is reporting that one of its journalists in Cuba spoke to Joshua and Sharyn Hakken, who say their boys, ages 2 and 4, are fine. El Nuevo Herald, the Spanish-language newspaper affiliated with the Miami Herald, said Monday night that it had confirmed that the Hakkens were in the custody of Cuban immigration officials and were being attended to by U.S. consular officials. On Tuesday, CNN reported that Joshua and Sharyn Hakken were seen

- A moose is an animal with horns on the front of its head and a hunting-lodge wall on its back. So goes an old laugh line. These days, Charlie Crist is the moose of Florida politics. He appears to be a threat for sure, though he is not threatening at all once you turn on the lights and see the hunting-lodge wall on his back. Make no mistake, Crist once was a real threat. Then Republicans showed him the door following the Jim Greer fiasco, and after his multiple flip-flops on lifelong conservative positions, not to mention

TAMPA — They could be near Key West, in a cove or far out in the Gulf of Mexico by now. On Friday, authorities said the man who kidnapped his young children Wednesday is likely with his family on a 25-foot sailboat. And though the seas were choppy during Thursday´s storms, deputies say 35-year-old Joshua Hakken knows how to sail. Surveillance video even recorded him loading supplies onto the boat Wednesday, indicating the escape was planned. The U.S. Coast Guard and state marine units were scouring the water Friday. Civilian boaters also got a description of the sailboat

The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia has recently decreed that all churches in the Arabian Peninsula must be destroyed. “The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia is the most senior and most influential Sunni Muslim religious and legal authority in Saudi Arabia … His main role is to give opinions (fatwas) on legal matters and on social affairs. The Saudi court system is heavily influenced by the opinions of the Grand Mufti.” The Grand Mufti seems to have missed President Obama’s “New Beginning” Cairo speech. On that occasion the newly elected President showcased his personal knowledge of that faith.

Anne Gearan and Chico Harlan at the Washington Post state the obvious: “U.S. struggling to contain nuclear threats from North Korea, Iran”. They might have added Pakistan to the list. The ‘Axis of Evil’, which the ‘reality-based’ community confidently supposed did not exist, is now aiming their missiles at the West Coast. In my Weekly Standard cover story about the fallout from the “Climategate” email scandal three years ago, I offered the following question by way of prediction: Eventually the climate modeling community is going to have to reconsider the central question: Have the models the IPCC uses for its predictions of catastrophic warming overestimated the climate’s sensitivity to greenhouse gases? (Snip) A Washington-based Economist correspondent admitted to me privately several years ago that the senior editors in London had mandated consistent and regular alarmist climate coverage in its pages. The problem for the climateers is increasingly dire.

When composing the music for "The Barber of Seville," Rossini craved din and distraction, going so far as to beg his friends to remain close by while he worked amid the hubbub. He wrote with lightning speed, finishing the score in roughly three weeks. Tchaikovsky, by contrast, needed silence and solitude and found both in retreats into rural surroundings. Beethoven wrote with difficulty, laboring over "Fidelio" off and on for nearly a decade, which didn´t prevent his one opera from falling short of the sublimity of his best symphonies, quartets and works for piano. These foibles and habits

TAMPA - The weight you gain these days from a plateful of hefty stone crab claws soaked in drawn butter or mustard sauce is offset by the weight you lose from your wallet. Stone crab suddenly is hard to find in local restaurants and fish markets and expensive when it’s available. Blame the weather, natural population fluctuations and an influx of octopus that love stone crabs even more than hungry Floridians do. Stone crabs are only harvested along Florida’s Gulf Coast; the season runs from Oct. 15 to May 15. Crabs are trapped, pulled to the surface

Despite massive international pressure, North Korea has been moving ahead with its long-range missile and nuclear ambitions, launching a rocket in December and conducting a nuclear test in February. International sanctions tightened in response, and even China, a longtime ally, stepped up inspections of North Korea-bound freight. Responding to the crackdown, North Korea´s government has been issuing new threats of war nearly every day over the past month, cutting ties to South Korea and ordering military units to prepare for attack at any moment. Over the past month, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA),

One of the problems facing anyone trying to write about Winston Churchill´s early life is that Churchill himself wrote "My Early Life," one of the best autobiographies in the English language. Michael Shelden, the distinguished biographer of Graham Greene and George Orwell, has nonetheless done an entertaining and erudite job of presenting the disparate pieces of Churchill´s life between the ages of 26 and 40—with one glaring and regrettable exception. It was in this 1901-15 period, Mr. Shelden observes, that Churchill readied the Royal Navy for a world war, pursued a radical agenda of social reform, crossed

The phrase “low information voter” was originally coined to describe people who were too stupid to vote for liberal policies because they didn’t know what was good for them. “Low Information Voters will vote against labor unions, in spite of the fact that the labor unions are responsible for getting them the 40 hour work week, decent wages, employer provided health insurance, vacations, lunch hours, and breaks, among other things.” (Snip) What supposedly distinguished LIVs from ‘thinking’ voters was their use of cues instead of individual, reasoned analysis. “Cues” are proxy measures of the underlying questions they are unwilling

The Pax Americana ”is a term applied to the historical concept of relative peace in the Western Hemisphere and later the Western world resulting from the preponderance of power enjoyed by the United States beginning around the start of the 20th century.” For nearly three generations the world population has enjoyed a rising standard of living and the absence of general war. According to administration officials the party’s only just begun. “In September 2010, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton proclaimed a ‘new American Moment’ that would “lay the foundations for lasting American leadership for decades to come.”

The murder trial of abortionist Kermit Gosnell largely is being ignored by the mainstream media, even in the face of grisly testimony, such as what we heard yesterday. Life News reports: ...a former employee described how she heard a baby scream during a live-birth abortion. Abortion clinic employee Sherry West described an incident which "really freaked (her) out" and related to the jury how she heard a child who was born alive following an abortion scream.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Efforts by Senate Democrats to reach compromise with Republicans over expanding required federal background checks have yet to yield an agreement, and conservatives were promising to try

North Korea’s young leader Kim Jong-un is waiting for United States President Barack Obama to make a phone call to Pyongyang to discuss easing tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to Russia’s news agency Itar-Tass. The report cited United Kingdom diplomats, saying Pyongyang was demanding the U.S. president personally call Kim Jong-un as one of the conditions to relieve the current conflict at hand. Itar-Tass also quoted the U.K.’s Sky News as saying North Korea currently has eight nuclear warheads.

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

The letter from the group, “Special Operations Speaks,” supports the appointment of a special committee tasked with the single mission of investigating the attack that left Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans dead, and shut down the CIA operation in an annex of the Benghazi consulate, in the Sept. 11, 2012 attack. “Congress must show some leadership and provide answers to the public

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

More than six months since Ambassador Christopher Stevens was assassinated by terrorists in Benghazi, the Obama administration is still trying to keep a lid on information about the attack. Congress and the American people need to know what happened the night of Sept. 11, 2012. Who did the killing and what was their motive? Why wasn´t help sent? And why did the administration lie about who was responsible? Members of Congress have asked hundreds of questions at hearings conducted by several investigative committees, but many of the most significant have been left unanswered. Information detailing what happened before, during and Headline corrected.
