Number of Protestant Americans
Is in Steep Decline, Study Finds

New York Times, by Laurie Goodstein

Original Article

Posted By:jeffreyabigail, 10/10/2012 6:57:48 AM

For the first time since researchers began tracking the religious identity of Americans, fewer than half said they were Protestants, a steep decline from 40 years ago when Protestant churches claimed the loyalty of more than two-thirds of the population. A new study released on Tuesday by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life found that it was not just liberal mainline Protestants, like Methodists or Episcopalians, who abandoned their faith, but also more conservative evangelical and “born again” Protestants.

Comments:
The article states that nearly 1 in 5 Americans (20%) are either atheist, agnostic or of no faith. But toward the end of the article, it states that 12% of the religiously unaffiliated group are atheists. In other words only 2.4% (20% x 12%) are atheists. Couldn't Pravda had just stated this near the beginning of the article? And state 2.4% instead of 20% of the unaffiliated group for clarity?

“A lot of the younger people are very spotty in their attendance at worship, but if we have a mission project, they’re here,” said Ms. Lindner, the pastor of a Presbyterian church in New Jersey. “They run the soup kitchens, they build the houses in Habitat for Humanity.”

Moral therapeutic deism. Better than oogedy-boogedy religion?

The Elmer Gantrys of retail religion have run off many of the faithful.

In spite of much agnosticism in the ranks, organized religion has built and staffed an amazing number of hospitals, schools and charitable institutions.

We can thank the Catholics for higher education in general.

I am not formally religious but here in the Northeast, it is not at all difficult to understand why so many older "mainstream" Protestant denominations are on the decline. They've become limp mouthpieces for an Obama-type agenda and in addition they are breathtakingly boring. You have to have a reason to belong to a religion and Protestant denominations in this part of the country don't give you one.

They don't abandon their faith. That is in Christ and is enduring. But they do abandon the churches that become increasingly political and no longer adhere to Christ's principles.

maybe I am an old fogey, but I don't want to hear low rent garage bands and so called praise music, ever, let alone Sunday morning. Rattled brains are in no position to hear the still, small voice.

I am also not interested in amateur attempts at multimedia presentations, or even a simple projector screen.

Hopefully these are just my local issues, I've attended several churches..once...looking for something that I cannot find.

Bear in mind the news source and the delibrate infiltration of most organized religion by sharletans bent of pushing gay marraige. Thats why the official organized faiths are in sharp decline. People are just going elsewhere.

The results of years of 'nonjudgmental' liberal Protestant denominations standing for nothing,

As well as not giving believers any internal peace or the faith to sustain them during life's trials and tribulations, or having a faith that gives them JOY.

Just a place to 'go to church'.

#9 - I couldn't agree more. I detest "happy clappy" church services. Five hundred years of ecclesiastical music, and we have to listen to limited-talent kids play guitars and bang drums and chant mind-numbing, repetitive lyrics? And don't even get me started on the "progressive" agenda spouted from the pulpit.

In this hilltop suburb of Salt Lake City, where a vista of white spires signals a concentration of Mormons and their churches, it is a given that every boy will become a Cub Scout at 8 and then a Boy Scout at 11. With mutual exaltation of God and country and a shared aim of nurturing “morally straight” men with leadership skills and a service ethic, the Mormons and the Boy Scouts seem made for each other, as entwined as a square knot.

The private equity giants Blackstone Group and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts are longtime rivals that compete for multibillion-dollar deals. But during last decade’s buyout boom, according to newly released e-mails in a civil lawsuit accusing them of collusion, the two firms appeared to be on much cozier terms. In September 2006, for instance, Blackstone and K.K.R. were both circling the technology giant Freescale Semiconductor. After a Blackstone group outbid a K.K.R. consortium to buy Freescale for nearly $18 billion, Hamilton E. James, the president of Blackstone, e-mailed his colleagues

The son of the Nevada rancher locked in an increasingly tense land dispute with the federal government, says their cowboys managed to break a blockade and retrieve around 30 head of cattle. Federal agents swooped on Tuesday after Cliven Bundy, dubbed the last remaining rancher in southern Nevada, refused to remove his herd of 900 cows from land he claims has been in his family since 1870. The heavily-armed federal agents, equipped with eight helicopters and backed-up by snipers, surrounded the Bundy ranch after the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) attained a federal court order to confiscate the family´s herd. Solar power has won the global argument. Photovoltaic energy is already so cheap that it competes with oil, diesel and liquefied natural gas in much of Asia without subsidies. Roughly 29pc of electricity capacity added in America last year came from solar, rising to 100pc even in Massachusetts and Vermont.[Snip] The technology is improving so fast--helped by the US military--that it has achieved a virtous circle. Michael Parker and Flora Chang, at Sanford Bernstein, say we entering a new order of "global energy deflation" that must ineluctably erode the viability of oil, gas and the fossil fuel nexus over time.
