I remember reading many news reports from the U.K. that mentioned cases where home owners were arrested due to confrontations with home invaders. I think it is all part of the bleeding hearts gone wild across the pond. Thank goodness they are fighting back now.

A farmer in England was accosted in his home and his family threatened by burglars with knives. He shot them with a shotgun and spent five years in jail for defending his family in his home. I don't believe either crook died.

At my house this is called the big bang theory. I am not sure how much of the post slaughter clean-up would be covered under my homeowners policy. Magazines are meant to be emptied from time to time. Its good for the springs.

That was the Tony Martin case, and one burgler did die when shot with a pump shotgun. Martin had the shotgun without the proper permit(s) and that was a factor. But SO WHAT?

IMO if you are breaking into houses and get shot, good on the homeowner, and that is just the proper response.

Finally, the Brits start to behave a bit more reasonably on the self-defense issue.

I noted they stopped short of a castle law. Now they get to weasel on what 'gross' disproportional means.

OP, the Justice Secretary acts in concert with the Prime Minister and other Cabinet members. This situation is particularly difficult because European Human Rights laws must be considered. I'm sure it's taken some time to draft something to cover the intolerable situation and at the same time conform to European human rights.

I began writing about how law-abiding the British used to be. However, it turned into a small tome on a culture that disappeared from the country along with the pride of a coal miner or factory worker in the job he did. Just trust me when I say that if a homeowner shot someone and called the police to investigate a burglary gone awry, it was probably a put-up job where someone wanted to cover up a murder. That's why homeowners have been held for a couple of days because even though societal behavior has changed, the law has not. Police must gather incontrovertible evidence that it was indeed a case of personal protection and not a fake murder, no matter how obvious the case may be. As you see, the Conservative government (as opposed to the previous Labour government) is crafting a law to fit changed societal conditions.

Just absorb the facts: around 1990 annual murders totaled about 70 (no typo) for the 12 million population of the Greater London area. During the same period New Orleans was seeing a murder a day in its then 600,000 population. Murders in the UK were very rare when I was growing up.

By the way, there have been cases in the US, some recently, where homeowners have been held at least overnight in similar fatalities. There was one such case in Durham, NC when we lived there in the mid 1990s.

A constitution and bill of rights would kinda obviate the need for a Justice Minister to consult with a Prime Minister and cabinet (who by definition are transient or short-lived public officials)and certainly with the EU, correct #9??

I think every home should have several MP40s' and at minimun one M14 per resident. A 1911A1 45acp should be on every hip.
