8 takeaways from
the new Pew poll

Washington Post, by Chris Cillizza

Original Article

The latest Pew poll showing former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney ahead of President Obama among likely voters has the potential to rapidly re-orient conventional wisdom about the challenger’s chances of winning. Of course, this is a single poll — although Gallup’s latest tracking also shows movement toward Romney since last Wednesday’s debate — and, as such, should be taken cum grano salis. Still, it’s a major shot in the arm for a Romney campaign that 10 days ago was fighting off “Is it all over?” stories. While the topline numbers in the Pew survey are sexy — politically speaking,

Mitt & Paul have the power of persuasion.

Obama & Co. have every other kind of power you can think of.....all of them bad.

If truth and logic and kindness served them then they would use them....but they don't.

This Cillizza guy (what kind of name is that?) must be about to soil his pants. Pew is always one of the biggest liars until about 10 days out. OMG!

By the way, this poll is like all polls until the last few days--meaningless.

The new Pew poll should be very distressing for 0, it's still weighted for the Dems and now he Romney is up more that the margin of error.

While I certainly want to be happy, I am completely holding any reaction until 11/7/12. Hopefully, America's second day of Independence.

Couple of points:

People are (starting) to like Romney. We're getting used to Mitt's public personna. Like Tanya Reiman (O'Reilly' body language expert), however, I do wish Mitt would work to lose his smirk-like "neutral face" that he shows after he makes a point. It really hurts our perception of him, and holds his likability down.

Romney’s biggest weakness that he seems to be promising more than he can deliver, may not be so. The dramatic Reagan recovery after the Carter debacle demonstrates that it's possible to deliver as promised. All the elements (large reserves of energy, business capital, skilled labor, and consumer demand) are there. Like a wound spring, all that is needed are changes in government regulations and policy to release all of that "potential energy".

That pesky party ID question. Yes, Pew sampled more Republicans for this one and that may have skewed it a bit in our favor - for a change. However, several pundits have pointed out that pollsters shift in October from reporting what they want us to think to reporting what we actually think. They want to preserve their accuracy as the election approaches. They have a reputation to protect, don't ya' know.

A crowd of marijuana smokers expected to swell to 80,000 gathered Saturday in Denver to mark the counterculture holiday known as 4/20 on the first celebration since Colorado and Washington made pot legal for recreation use. Reggae music filled the air, and so did the smell of marijuana, as celebrants gathered by mid-morning in a park just beside the state Capitol. Few police were in sight, though public marijuana use is still prohibited here. "People aren´t afraid to come out and celebrate it, the way they used to be," said 52-year-old Charles Bade of Denver.

Dead terror suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev´s best friend had his ´throat slit´ in an unsolved murder in 2011 as family members today told of how he was known to ´manipulate and use´ his brother. It has emerged the terror suspect´s best friend died in a gruesome unsolved murder two years ago, just after Tamerlan said he had ´one single American friend´.

The most intriguing nugget from the big Boston Globe profile of the Tsarnaev Brothers (the brothers suspected of carrying out the Boston Marathon attack) is this one: Gym owner Allan said that Tamerlan had once introduced him to an American, Brendan Mess, whom Tamerlan described as his best friend. Two years ago, Mess and two other men were brutally killed in a Waltham apartment where they were found by police with their throats slit and their bodies covered with marijuana. The murders remain unsolved. Nobody states that there´s a connection, but obviously now everyone´s wondering if there is one.

So once again, no good deed goes unpunished. Uncle Sam lets another bunch of leeching future terrorists into the country who have absolutely no business being here, gives them “asylum,” making them immediately eligible for welfare, and this is the thanks we get? They turn into mass murderers. We bring in thousands of Muslims from a primitive society that has been battling Christians for centuries, and put them into a peaceful Christian society — what could possible go wrong? This is what I was thinking about yesterday, with much of the city under what amounted to martial law.

We are still speculating about virtually everything right now, but I feel as though I need to explain why I find the quick and easy conversation about Muslims being radicalized in America to be so illogical and laced with bigotry. Of course, there is a global violent jihadist movement, loosely organized, that wants to recruit young men to influence policies at home and abroad and perhaps usher in the global caliphate. That ideology motivates some Muslims to kill innocent people. But you´re allowed to be a radical Muslim in America.
