| "Sheriff" John Rovick, the beloved Los Angeles children's TV show host whose gentle, fatherly persona made him a welcome guest in homes throughout the 1950s and '60s, died Saturday morning. He was 93. Rovick died in his sleep at a nursing facility in Boise, Idaho, said his wife, Jacqueline. I've never heard of the Sheriff but can only imagine the positive impact he has had directly or indirectly on millions of people. What a wonderful story. Many of us grew up with a local kid's show host( ours was Kenny Roberts -the Jumping Cowboy) and way too many of them ended up like Roger Miller's "Kansas City Star".

Are there really NO individuals on TV these days, that little kids watch and follow?
Of course back in the day, the number one was Captain Kangaroo.
But I showed up in Los Angeles in 1961 and watched Sheriff John and Engineer Bill (and Bozo the Clown and Soupy Sales and Chucko the Birthday Clown and, um, Walter Cronkite).
Sheriff John, of all things, had his "Laugh and Be Happy" theme, and "Put Another Candle On The Birthday Cake" songs. I don't actually remember liking or watching any other parts of his show.

My mother sat me down in front of the TV in 1952. Got me out of her hair.
I was flipping through the channels in the early '70's and caught his last show.

Huell Howser, the folksy television host who chronicled the hidden history of the Golden State in his “California’s Gold” show, has died. Howser, who was about 68, was a resident of Palm Springs. The Riverside County coroner confirmed his death Monday, Jan. 7. An employee who did not want to be identified said Howser had been in hospice care. No information about the cause of death was available. Just six weeks ago, his staff confirmed that he had decided to retire.

Pro golfers, golf writers, and TV commentators are up in arms that Tiger Woods was only given a 2-stroke penalty for his illegal drop on the 15th hole yesterday. Tiger said last night that he dropped his ball two yards behind his previous spot, clearly violating the rule that you must drop "as nearly as possible" to your original spot. Golf people are not happy about it. They say that the new rule is B.S. (or it´s at least being misinterpreted), and Tiger should DQ himself to save the integrity of the game.

Here is something I don’t understand: liberals are often revealed as vile, vulgar hatemongers–not all of them, of course, but far too many–yet they never seem to pay a penalty at the polls.
