A Toledo, Ohio, native who launched his broadcasting career in radio, Rovick was a newly hired staff announcer at KTTV-TV (Channel 11) when the Los Angeles station first went on the air in 1949. Kids loved him - especially little boys. Him and Engineer Bill. But there was a special kindness about the Sheriff...

I've never heard of the Sheriff but can only imagine the positive impact he has had directly or indirectly on millions of people. What a wonderful story. Many of us grew up with a local kid's show host( ours was Kenny Roberts -the Jumping Cowboy) and way too many of them ended up like Roger Miller's "Kansas City Star".

Are there really NO individuals on TV these days, that little kids watch and follow?

Of course back in the day, the number one was Captain Kangaroo.

But I showed up in Los Angeles in 1961 and watched Sheriff John and Engineer Bill (and Bozo the Clown and Soupy Sales and Chucko the Birthday Clown and, um, Walter Cronkite).

Sheriff John, of all things, had his "Laugh and Be Happy" theme, and "Put Another Candle On The Birthday Cake" songs. I don't actually remember liking or watching any other parts of his show.

My mother sat me down in front of the TV in 1952. Got me out of her hair.
I was flipping through the channels in the early '70's and caught his last show.

Some stuff on Youtube.

In a watershed moment and a huge victory over environmentalists, General Electric has agreed to stop projects that are designed solely for the purpose of carbon dioxide reductions to please those who lobby for climate change concessions. The National Center for Public Policy Research, a non-partisan, free-market, independent conservative think-tank which has been fighting GE for years because of GE’s liberal bias under CEO Jeffrey Immelt, scored a huge victory after receiving the commitment from General Electric. Late in 2013, the National Center submitted a shareholder proposal as part of GE´s 2014 proxy statement and annual meeting materials. The proposal: ...request[ed] that the

First conservative icon Thomas Sowell turned on Ted Cruz, now it appears that Ann Coulter is souring on the Texas Republican as well. Sowell published two columns this week slamming Cruz for being self-serving. Coulter praised the first of Sowell’s columns in a tweet Wednesday. Later, in an appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity” Wednesday night, Coulter doubled down on her praise of Sowell’s anti-Cruz column: ”I never push anyone else’s column but mine. Today everyone has got to read Thomas Sowell’s article.” During the “Hannity” segment, Coulter attacked tea party groups for being filled with “shysters” and “conmen,” naming specifically the Senate Conservatives

Singer Ted Nugent apologized on Friday for calling President Obama a “subhuman mongrel” last month. “I do apologize, not necessarily to the president, but on behalf of much better men than myself,” Nugent said in a radio interview on “The Ben Ferguson Show." The rocker said he was sorry for using “street fighter terminology of subhuman mongrel,’” and admitted "I did cross the line.” Nugent said he should have used a term such as “violator of his oath, the Constitution” instead. The apology came just a day after Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) urged Nugent to apologize for the remark. “Ted

Self-described ´Maverick´ Senator John McCain is making waves with his defeatist statements about how formidable Hillary Rodham Clinton will be as a presidential candidate, predicting that she would win if the 2016 election were held in 2014. ´I would bet, my friend, as much as I hate to admit it,´ McCain told Piers Morgan during his Thursday night CNN broadcast, ´that right now – this is why we have campaigns – but right now, if the election were tomorrow, Hillary Clinton would most likely be the president of the United States.´ The Arizona pol and 2008 Republican presidential nominee was

Cruz Aims at His Own Side -- Again

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, may be the brightest light to adorn the Republican Party in many years. He knows how to make the case for conservative ideas, pointing, for example, to the contrasting fates of Detroit and Houston to illustrate the superiority of conservative policies. So it´s particularly galling to see that rather than train his fire at President Barack Obama and the liberal machine that cocoons him, Cruz has become a one-man wrecking ball against Republicans. His most recent foray into sabotaging his colleagues concerned the debt limit increase. Because Speaker John Boehner sent over a "clean" debt limit bill,

Four United States Senators have a written a letter to FBI director James Comey about the indictment of author and filmmaker Dinesh D´Souza. Senators Charles Grassley, ranking member of the Judiciary Committee, Jeff Sessions, Ted Cruz, and Mike Lee are the four senators, all Republicans, to have signed the letter. The letter quotes Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz as saying, "I can´t help but think that [D´Souza´s] politics have something to do with it. ... It smacks of selective prosecution." And, the senators write, "To dispel this sort of public perception that Mr. D´Souza may have been targeted because

I repeat: I’m not a global warming believer. I’m not a global warming denier. I’ve long believed that it cannot be good for humanity to be spewing tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. I also believe that those scientists who pretend to know exactly what this will cause in 20, 30 or 50 years are white-coated propagandists. “The debate is settled,” asserted propagandist in chief Barack Obama in his latest State of the Union address. “Climate change is a fact.” Really? There is nothing more anti-scientific than the very idea that science is settled, static, impervious to challenge. Take

FRESNO, Calif.- Federal officials say many farmers caught in California´s drought will receive no irrigation water this year from a vast system of rivers, canals and reservoirs interlacing the state. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation announced Friday it will continue to monitor rain and snowfall, but at this point there´s not enough water in the Central Valley Project to give water to farmers. Last year, Central Valley farmers received 20 percent of their normal allowance, and that figure is now set at zero percent. This marks the third dry year for the state, and Gov. Jerry Brown last month declared

President Obama’s stimulus may have boosted the economy when it passed in 2009, but it’s now beginning to take a toll and will soon begin to leave the economy worse off than if it had never passed, according to a new report Friday by the Congressional Budget Office. Mr. Obama signed the stimulus into law five years ago this week, vowing it would help rescue the economy from its post-Wall Street collapse tailspin, and saying it would save millions of jobs. The CBO said it’s been successful at that, helping sustain between 700,000 and 3.6 million jobs at its peak

Something is seriously wrong with Michelle Obama. Pitching ObamaCare on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Mrs. Obama called young adults "knuckleheads." The first lady openly mocked the 18- to 29-year-olds who catapulted her husband into the White House in 2008 and 2012. Fallon: Because a lot of young people watch our show. Would you like to tell me - why would they...? Because a lot people don´t have the money to spend on this. Obama: Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, young people can stay on their parents´ insurance until they are 26. But once they hit 26, they´re

Two leading Republicans on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence say that Michael Morell, then acting director of the Central Intelligence Agency, gave an account of his role on Benghazi that was often misleading and sometimes deliberately false. “I went back and reviewed some of his testimony the other day and he’s gotten himself in a real box,” says Senator Saxby Chambliss, the highest-ranking Republican on the committee. “It’s really strange. I’ve always thought Mike was a straight-up guy, gave us good briefings—factual, straightforward. I mean, this has really been strange the last few weeks—all this now being uncovered.”At issue is

The Obamas have had few more obsequious media allies than NBC´s Jimmy Fallon. Now that he´s taking over the hallowed ground of "The Tonight Show," Fallon´s proven ability to spread his reach into viral videos on YouTube promises to become even more politically potent. Fallon´s Obama-friendly sketches and interviews have become immediate "news" grist for the Comcast corps at NBC and MSNBC. The same sensation happens when Fallon is ripping into a Republican. Just as NBC and MSNBC were tearing Gov. Chris Christie apart over "Bridgegate," Fallon joined this political crusade by bringing on liberal rock star Bruce Springsteen for a jokey
