Denver — When the owners of a Denver Mexican restaurant turned down an offer to host a Mitt Romney campaign stop, they never envisioned their lives would be threatening because of it. But Oscar Aguirre said that’s exactly what has happened. Aguirre owns Rosa Linda’s Mexican Cafe, which is located in the heart of Denver’s Highland neighborhood at 2005 West 33rd Avenue, with his parents. He said the Romney campaign reached out to his restaurant in August at least partly due to the fact that his parents are Mormon.
I believe them. They're Mormons and thought it would be bad for business to get political What I don't believe is that the death threats came from Republicans This is a typical dirty Dem trick. Remember when they had Obama HQ vandalized? Turned out it was Dems doing it. Typical, typical
What does this say about their customer base? I would never stop going to a restaurant I liked simply because Obama chose to eat there. Restaurants are businesses. They serve customers. Do they want to vet every person who comes in the door? Most people have a political leaning. In the mature world, we should be able to accept that.
And seriously...a death threat? Come on. They need to be recording the calls if its really that bad.
I'm thinking after he publicly stated he didn't want Romney to come, he heard from people telling him that if Romney wasn't welcome they weren't coming either. Then he needed to make up a story that might convince those disaffected customers that he's a victim.
The story says Romney's campaign reached out to them ... in AUGUST... and we're just hearing about this now, because of some ALLEGED threats made... in OCTOBER? And why isn't the word 'alleged' being used in this story?
This has most likely turned into a Democrat dirty trick.
When you serve one presidential candidate and then shut out the other one publicly, you are affectively telling about 47% of your prospective customers that they also are not welcome. That's the choice the businessman gets to make, as he and his parents own the restaurant, and as such can refuse service to anyone.
"When Rosa Linda’s went public with its desire to stay out of the political realm, Aguirre said the hate mail starting pouring in."
Why didn't they just keep their mouth shut if they wanted to stay out of the political realm? They were asked they said no that's it. They were the ones who broadcast what they did for what reason, to get customers, to get noticed. This just has a smell about it and I don't think the Romney campaign had anything to do with it.
(Sorry, hit 'submit' by mistake) Anywho, agree with all of the above. This is another fraudulent, panic, response from the Democratic Party because they have nothing of substance to run on and their incompetent boy pResident is losing BIG TIME!
Propaganda being spread by "fox news" and a story FULL of Barbara Streisand! NO Republicans act that way, it is DEMONRATS who send out death threats. As someone else said, check Axelgrease's phone records and you'll see who is calling in the threats. Lies and more lies!
When Rosa Linda’s went public with its desire to stay out of the political realm, Aguirre said the hate mail starting pouring in.
“We have been getting hate emails from people across the country, people sending us death threats and people calling us telling us we are racist,” Aguirre wrote. “That they hope we go out of business.”
Prove it. Share the "hate emails", the "death threats" with the police. I dare you.
The commander in chief and Harry Reid, his faithful dog robber in the U.S. Senate, have assigned the rangers of the National Park Service the most dangerous mission of the government shutdown. They’re already up for medals. Barack Obama will invite them to the Rose Garden any day now, or if not the Rose Garden, to the back nine at Congressional Country Club. Ribbons and decorations are waiting. The rangers are following the example of Darby’s Rangers, who were heroes of the Italian campaign in World War II. They were faithful, resourceful and as tough as hickory. Just like their namesake, William
The games politicians play: Barack Obama is having a lot of fun using the government shutdown to squeeze the public in imaginative ways. The point of the shutdown game is to see who can squeeze hardest, make the most pious speech and listen for the applause. It’s a variation on the grade-school ritual of “you show me yours, and I’ll show you mine.” President Obama is not a bad poker player, but the man with all the chips always starts with the advantage (and he gets all the aces). He has closed Washington down as tight as he dares, emphasizing the
We´re all paying more at the pump. It´s hurting consumers and dangerous for the fragile economy. And, it´s because of a Washington handout to corn farmers and big Wall Street banks - all disguised as a measure to promote renewable energy and clean-burning fuels. The Renewable Fuel Standards (RFS) mandates an ever-increasing floor of ethanol be mixed with gasoline. The bill, which was expanded under President Obama, ensures a baseline level of demand for ethanol, distorting the market and sending the price of corn substantially higher. That´s because gasoline refiners have to purchase ethanol, regardless of the price. So, corn prices tripled,
Every time there´s a shooting tragedy, there are more calls for gun control. Let´s examine a few historical facts. By 1910, the National Rifle Association had succeeded in establishing 73 NRA-affiliated high-school rifle clubs. The 1911 second edition of the Boy Scout Handbook made qualification in NRA´s junior marksmanship program a prerequisite for obtaining a BSA merit badge in marksmanship. In 1918, the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. established its own Winchester Junior Rifle Corps. The program grew to 135,000 members by 1925. In New York City, gun clubs were started at Boys, Curtis, Commercial, Manual Training and Stuyvesant high schools. With
With a government shutdown just hours away on Monday, White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Obama still plans to go to Asia this weekend. "We don´t have any changes to announce. We plan to make this trip," Carney told reporters at the White House Monday. "The president, as president, looks forward to and believes it is important to travel to Asia in order to promote our economic interests in Asia and our strategic interests in Asia." One of the Republicans´ criticisms of Obama is his absolute refusal to negotiate on a stopgap funding bill and the debt limit, even when he´s
After the federal government shutdown for 21 days from mid-December 1995 to early January 1996, the percentage of Americans who said they approved of the job Congress was doing increased, according to the Gallup poll. At the same time, the percentage of Americans who said they approved of the job then-President Bill Clinton was doing remained the same, and the percentage who said they approved of the job then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich was doing dropped by only two points. The government shutdown from Dec. 16, 1995 to Jan. 6, 1996, occurred when the Republican-controlled House of Representatives was trying to get President
Merck & Co. (MRK), the second-biggest U.S. drugmaker by sales, will fire 8,500 workers and revamp its research and development after seeing new medicines delayed by U.S. regulators. The positions eliminated are in addition to 7,500 job cuts Merck had already announced, the Whitehouse Station, New Jersey -based company said in a statement today. The firings now equal about 20 percent of the global workforce, and will cut across the entirety of Merck, including R&D, sales and management. The overhaul, to save $1 billion next year, is part of a strategy being set by Chief Executive Officer Ken Frazier and R&D chief
The cornerstone of ObamaCare — the new insurance marketplaces at the heart of the debate over a government shutdown — opens for business on Tuesday. The rollout of America’s new healthcare system is a pivotal moment for both President Obama and his Republican critics, and that’s a core reason why it has brought the federal government to a grinding halt. Republicans have fought fiercely to delay, defund or partially repeal the healthcare reform law in exchange for funding the rest of the federal government — proposals Obama and Senate Democrats have flatly rejected. Obama on Monday said, “The Affordable Care Act is moving
Bob Woodward of The Washington Post said if there is a “downturn or a collapse” resulting from the failure of CR or debt ceiling negotiations it will be on President Obama’s “head” Monday on Morning Joe. Woodward noted he respected President Obama’s objection to negotiating on the debt ceiling, but criticized the administration for failing to initiate any dialogue that could result in a deal on funding the government. “It’s on the president’s head, he’s got to lead, he’s got to talk” Woodward said: BOB WOODWARD: Can I enter in here just for a moment because I think it’s a good question. And
Barack Obama is no Bill Clinton in the pantheon of romancers and boudoir bandits, but he is the president, after all, and his vain search for love in all the wrong places is enough to break a heart of stone. He just can’t believe that Hasan Rouhani, the new president of Iran, is just not that into him. (Isn’t everybody?) Not since Jimmy Carter chased Teddy Kennedy around the platform at the Democratic National Convention in 1980, begging for the traditional hands-above-the-head gesture of acclamation by rivals for the nomination, has an American president been so publicly scorned, rebuked and humiliated.
Washington — Time running short, the Democratic-controlled Senate passed legislation Friday that would avert a partial government shutdown early next week. But the measure faced a swift demise in the House at the hands of tea party conservatives who are adamantly opposed to funding included for the nation´s three-year-old health care law. The Senate´s 54-44 vote was strictly along party lines in favor of the measure, which would keep the government operating routinely through Nov. 15 and prevent a shutdown that could cause delays in some services. The bill´s passage masked a ferocious struggle for control of the Republican Party pitting Speaker
Here’s a shot of Sen. Ted Cruz praying in front of The White House yesterday. No, he’s not praying that Barack Obama will overturn Obamacare and no, he’s not praying that he will occupy the presidency one day. Instead, he’s alongside Rev. Rob Schenck (from Faith and Action) and Rev. Frazier White (a Democrat and Obama supporter) praying for Saeed Abedini, who has been in an Iranian prison for one year. He is being persecuted for his faith to Jesus Christ. Who says Ted Cruz isn’t bipartisan? I have not only interviewed Ted Cruz many times, but I have spent time with him
Families of fallen military service members usually receive a "death gratuity" of $100,000 for interment and expenses within days, but not during government shutdown. They paid the ultimate price serving their country — but their government can’t spare a cent to cover their funerals. The stooges on Capitol Hill added insult to tragedy Tuesday when it was revealed that the families of four soldiers and a Marine who were killed in Afghanistan have not received a $100,000 “death gratuity” because of the government shutdown....
I was born at the beginning of the Second World War into a family of high school teachers who were members of the Communist Party, and therefore were actually part of a vast conspiracy dedicated to the destruction of this country, although they would never have looked at it that way, and so-called liberals would be the first to deny it. (Snip) It is also an unhappy but hugely important fact that the conspiracy to which my parents belonged has steadily migrated into the heart of the Democratic Party until it now occupies the Oval Office in the person of
From its earliest days, the Obama Administration has operated from a “community organizer” worldview, characterized by an “us” against “them” perspective. The President has repeatedly and in a variety of circumstances said, “Elections have consequences, and I won” as an excuse for yet another executive order, non-Constitutional decision, or “in-your-face” arrogant action. The President goes through the motions of listening to others: he claims to be bipartisan; he hosts White House confabs and talks about the need for compromise, but he always ends up saying, “I won,” and ends any pretense of discussion or negotiation. He explains that, as President,
Conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer continued his criticism of Sen. Ted Cruz on Thursday, asking “where is he now?” “How exactly was he going to achieve abolition of Obamacare? Explain that to me. Has he ever explained it? And where is he now?” Krauthammer said on “The Laura Ingraham Show.” Krauthammer, who has previously hit Cruz (R-Texas) on the strategy of shutdown to defund Obamacare, included Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) in his questioning and said the two went home to “have lunch.” “I mean his sidekick, Senator [Mike] Lee said, ‘Oh, we’re past Obamacare. We moved on.’ These are the generals
One of the TV´s priciest daytime experiments soon could be coming to an end. Stations throughout the U.S. are contracted to carry Katie Couric´s syndicated talk show through summer 2014, but the decision on whether Katie will score a third season likely will be made this month -- and renewal seems a long shot. In fall 2012, Disney/ABC TV rolled out the red carpet for Couric, 56, giving her plum time slots on the best stations, fat license fees and loads of promotion. The initial annual budget was $50 million, according to a show source -- including $20 million for Couric
WASHINGTON — Starting in about a decade, Kingston, Jamaica, will probably be off-the-charts hot — permanently. Other places will soon follow. Singapore in 2028. Mexico City in 2031. Cairo in 2036. Phoenix and Honolulu in 2043. And eventually the whole world in 2047. A new study on global warming pinpoints the probable dates for when cities and ecosystems around the world will regularly experience hotter environments the likes of which they have never seen before. And for dozens of cities, mostly in the tropics, those dates are a generation or less away. "This paper is both innovative and sobering," said
The National Park System has a budget of $2.6 billion, much of it raised by concession and attendance fees. Even if it were entirely taxpayer-funded it would represent only .00068 of every federal dollar in our $3.8 trillion budget. Nonetheless, hardball-playing White House strategists have made it the most conspicuous instrument of pain inflicted by the federal shutdown. The Republican House has tried to fund the park system during the struggle over Obamacare funding, but without success. Even park funding offers by states have been rejected by the feds. Almost every day brings fresh examples of unnecessary annoyances and hardships visited
I’m tempted to call it a clown show but that would be insulting to clowns:(Snip for graphic) It ran for one hour and six minutes, with 12 different reporters being called on — although, notably, not Ed Henry of Fox News — and between them they couldn’t muster one question about the catastrophe that is Healthcare.gov or the spectacle of National Park Rangers locking senior-citizen tourists out of war memorials and/or inside their hotels. I admit that, near the end of it, when Twitter was already starting to buzz about the oh-fer on this week’s two unhappy topics, I started
The Obama administration insisted Tuesday it had no choice but to withhold death benefits to relatives of 1st Lt. Jennifer Moreno, a 25-year-old soldier born and raised in San Diego, and four other soldiers killed since the partial government shutdown began Oct. 1. This is ridiculous and perverse. President Barack Obama has used an expansive — and some legal scholars believe extreme — interpretation of his powers to unilaterally rewrite key provisions of the No Child Left Behind law, the sweeping 2002 measure that drastically reshaped federal education policies. In similar fashion, the president has unilaterally rewritten key provisions of
The State Department announced Wednesday that it was cutting hundreds of millions in military and other aid to Egypt, and make no mistake: this was not a government shutdown move. This was the President of the United States blackmailing a sovereign state to force it to restore the Muslim Brotherhood government he favors. With the Egyptian economy in crisis and Egypt strongly dependent on this aid, Obama has just effectively cast his vote for the Muslim Brotherhood’s return to power – and his vote outweighs that of millions of Egyptians.
Gov. Jerry Brown of California signed AB 154 on Wednesday, legalizing non-physician abortions in the state. The legislation, which had been pushed vigorously by Planned Parenthood, had been strongly opposed by pro-life groups and some physicians, arguing that it amounted to legalizing back-alley abortions for profit. In a statement, Gov. Brown boasted that AB 154 was one of seven bills signed Tuesday "to support the health and well-being of women in California."
Tyranny, being as endemic to the human condition as other similar privations of the human good such as ignorance, vice, or sickness, is as old as mankind. What may be new, however, is the uniquely intractable form of tyranny that is currently metastasizing throughout the world, namely the rule of an authoritarian plurality of societal parasites. Our next thousand years of darkness, if such be our fate, will begin under the governance of a "parasitocracy." The modern West has defied ancient wisdom on so many fronts, introducing new modes of existence and coexistence, spreading prosperity and promise in hitherto inconceivable measures,
