Sierra Club targets lawmaker
who wants to restore Hetch Hetchy

North County Times (Calif), by Lance Williams

Original Article

Posted By:wydleyred, 10/3/2012 1:24:19 PM

The Sierra Club is spending $625,000 to defeat a Republican lawmaker who has championed one of the environmental organization’s most cherished goals – draining the Hetch Hetchy reservoir in Yosemite National Park. Campaign finance reports show that in September, the Sierra Club Independent Action super political action committee made several expenditures targeting U.S. Rep. Dan Lungren of Gold River, who is locked in a tight race against Democrat Dr. Ami Bera, an Elk Grove physician. The club is paying for a hard-edged series of TV commercials and mailers in the Sacramento-area district.

Comments:
Message from Sierra Club -- beating Republicans is more important than our goal of restoring the magnificent Hetch Hetchy Valley (the valley that Nancy Pelosi, Dianne Feinstein and Babwa Boxer insist must remain San Francisco's reservoir).

Absolute proof that when a republican jumps into bed with the Sierra Club, he/she gets more than just a good night's sleep.

I have a good friend who is a fervent environmentalist. He was chairman of the local chapter of the Sierra Club. He resigned both as chairman and from the Sierra Club because the national organization supported the group of local members who voted to endorse the Democratic candidate, who had nothing to recommend him on the environment, over the Republican candidate, who my friend thought was very good on environmental issues.

In other words, the Sierra Club is no longer an environmentalist organization. It sometime back became nothing more than a branch of the Democratic Party.

So the Sierra Club is about Democrats, not the Sierra Nevadas.

Fairbanks - The rusty 55-gallon barrels sit on the tundra near Chandler Lake in the middle of the Brooks Range like a caribou herd scattered across the landscape, surrounded by rugged, snow-capped 6,000- and 7,000-foot-high peaks. Unlike caribou, rusty barrels don’t feed the people of Anaktuvuk Pass, and they aren’t nearly as nice to look at, which is why residents in the village in the Brooks Range 250 miles northeast of Fairbanks want them gone. The fuel drums, an estimated 130 of them, have been sitting there for more than 50 years, left by the Department of Defense

Improperly assigned teachers a problem

Public schools across California have assigned thousands of teachers to classes without the proper credentials or legal authorization, a persistent problem that state and local education officials blame on mismanagement, budget shortages and a limited pool of qualified specialists. Untrained teachers have been assigned to a variety of difficult classes, including those filled with English-language learners and others with special intellectual and physical needs. In many cases, these teachers lack training in a particular subject that they´ve been assigned to teach, such as English or math.

Many people turn to knitting as a means of stress reduction, and Harmeet Dhillon of San Francisco was no exception when she took up the hobby during college in 1986. Dhillon, however, has taken her interest in textiles a step or two further than most recreational knitters. In 2012, she founded Sea Ranch Woolworks,(Snip) She was born in rural India and is now as an award-winning trial attorney at the helm of her own firm, chairwoman of the Republican Party of San Francisco and a candidate for vice chair of the California Republican Party.

It's usually easy to predict how particular California state legislators will vote on a bill: 99 percent of the time, Democrats vote the same way as the majority of their party; 94 percent of the time, Republicans vote the same way as the majority of their party, according to a Bee review of voting records from the 2011-2012 legislative session. The two parties are each unanimous in their support or rejection of a bill during the vast majority of votes. Every Democrat in the Assembly or Senate voted the same way on about 86 percent of bills.

As they battle for those workers, the United Auto Workers is calling Local 1000 a hypocritical union-buster. An official with the National Labor Relations Board says SEIU, as an employer, has engaged in "unfair labor practices."

A group of whistleblowers, including a number of aviation experts, have come forward in a new documentary to claim that the official explanation for the crash of TWA Flight 800 was wrong and a gas tank explosion did not bring down the flight off the coast of Long Island 17 years ago. However, the six whistleblowers, all part of the original investigation team, stopped short of saying the plane was shot down. Flight 800, a Boeing 747, had just taken off from JFK airport with 230 people aboard on July 17, 1996 enroute to Paris when it exploded

Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.

We’ll come back in a minute to Senator Rubio and Congressman Ryan. For those who came in late, a year before the IRS scandals burst onto the scene in early May of 2013, an alert investigative reporter for WTHR-Indianapolis (Channel 13), Bob Segall by name, produced a stunning piece of journalism. Segall’s video report is found here and we will quote from his story for the basics.

It is understood that a contingency plan is in place for the unlikely event that an attempt would be made on the President’s life. The Secret Service also have diplomatic immunity which will allow them to shoot to kill a would-be assassin without fear of prosecution. As part of the “evacuation route” plan, they would be able to spirit the President by chopper to one of the carriers where a jet is on standby to take him back to the United States.

Bill Ayers believes President Obama gets a “failing grade” for his presidency, and should be tried for “war crimes,” along with all living presidents who have engaged in acts of “terrorism” abroad. Sitting down for an episode of RealClearPolitics’ “Morning Commute,” Ayers told host Charlie Stone that, on policy, Obama receives a “failing grade” along with the “F-minuses” he’s given previous presidents like George W. Bush and Richard Nixon. “I don’t think he’s let anybody down,” Ayers added, pointing to how during the 2008 presidential campaign then-Senator Obama consistently declared himself to be a “middle-of-the-road, pragmatic politician.”

Americans outraged by leaked information about two top-secret government surveillance programs are "not getting the complete story," President Obama told Charlie Rose in a PBS interview recorded Sunday for air Monday night - and the intelligence community is working on filling in the holes. One "legitimate critique" of the National Security Agency programs designed to track suspected terrorists by culling U.S. phone records and mining data from the servers of major Internet companies, the president conceded, is that because they´re classified, "the public may not fully" understand them. "That can make the public kind of nervous, right?"
