A dry cleaner and former member of the U.S. military has been arrested after suspicious documents and weapons were found in his crashed pickup truck early Tuesday. At about 5 a.m. Tuesday, a delivery driver spotted a crashed Chevrolet Silverado behind the Mayflower Place shopping center along state Highway 26 near Precinct Line. The driver notified the Hurst Police Department, who soon arrived to investigate. According to police, the vehicle was wrecked with front end damage, had its airbags deployed and, upon further inspection by officers,

"Dry cleaner" had better set off some alarms somewhere in our increasingly inept national security apparatus. Talk about a dream cover for an extremist. Anymore out there?

President Obama will discuss climate change in an upcoming Showtime documentary series produced by James Cameron. Mashable reports the segment with Obama will offer an exclusive understanding of the president´s thoughts on climate science and policy. Showtime taped the interview last week, individuals close to the documentary "Years of Living Dangerously" said. The series premieres April 13. This will be the first interview Obama has given solely on climate change since announcing his administration´s climate agenda last year. Cameron´s documentary focuses on the scientific aspects of multiple climate change threats. The project, funded in part by Cameron´s Avatar Alliance Foundation, was filmed in a

Astronomers have nicknamed a new dwarf planet circling the sun at the outer edges of the solar system after Vice President Joe Biden. According to Nature, a leading scientific journal, the object´s official designation is 2012 VP113. But the team studying its orbit around the sun colloquially refer to the planet as just "VP" or "Biden," after the sitting vice president. The object won´t carry an official title until scientists collect more data. After determining its orbit, they´ll submit a formal name to the International Astronomical Union (IAU) for consideration. The Biden dwarf is the second such object to be

At the California Republican Party’s convention earlier this month, chairman Jim Brulte announced 2014 would be the year of “pushing the party outside of its comfort zone,” and introduced four candidates vying to take on incumbent Gov. Jerry Brown in November. One of those candidates may be way outside that comfort zone -- a businessman, who also is a registered sex offender who served a decade in prison for voluntary manslaughter. Glenn Champ, who is listed as an “engineer and businessman” on the state election website, has a lengthy rap sheet. He was nabbed for picking up an underage prostitute

Two Boston firefighters were killed Wednesday in a fire that ripped through a brownstone in a densely-populated neighborhood, a city councilor says. The fire started shortly before 3 p.m. in the four-story building in the city´s Back Bay area. Smoke and flames fanned by strong winds poured from the roof and windows for hours. Councilor Josh Zakim, who represents the area, confirmed the firefighters´ deaths. Details of how the firefighters died weren’t immediately available, The Boston Globe reported. But some firefighters had been trapped in the burning building’s basement, officials said. The Boston Police Patrolman´s Association tweeted condolences to the Boston Fire Department early

A federal appeals court on Tuesday ruled that Kansas can strip two Planned Parenthood clinics of federal family planning money while the organization moves forward with its legal challenge of a state law it says is retaliation for its advocacy of abortion rights. Kansas is among several conservative states that have sought in recent years to strip Planned Parenthood of funding. At issue in Tuesday´s ruling is money distributed to states under Title X, a federally financed family planning program. The Title X money targets low-income individuals seeking reproductive services such as birth control, pregnancy testing, cancer screenings and treatment for

Since the start of the year, when it at last became clear that an ill-designed website was merely the least of Obamacare´s problems, Democrats have been on a search for a plausible villain on whom this sad state of affairs can be blamed. E.J. Dionne blames Republican nastiness, but he blames this for everything. Alec MacGillis at the New Republic blames Republican governors who rejected the expansion of Medicare: "Obamacare is hurting Democratic candidates because Republicans are hurting Obamacare," runs his article´s headline. The role of Russian forces, in his telling, was simply that of peacekeeper. “You may say that [Yanukovych] was thrown out of office for good reason. There are allegations against him that he was

A pair of potentially catastrophic cases will be argued before the Supreme Court on Tuesday. These cases are brought by privately held, for-profit corporations that are arguing their religious convictions should preclude them from offering employees the health insurance required by law. Specifically, these private employers don’t want to allow their employees’ insurance to cover some forms of birth control because, contrary to medicaland scientific evidence, they believe some birth control causes abortions. Corporations are not people. Corporations cannot have religious views. If religious rights are extended to corporations, it puts us on a slippery slope where any private company
