#7 and #12, we call ourselves African American precisely because most of us have no clue which African area or region which is now a coutry our ancesters came from, therefore, the tag for an entire continent. I've been to about 20 different African nations and have been claimed by locals in several but it's all speculation and not something to dwell upon. I prefer to use Black, but it's interchangeable with African American.

What's important is being born in, deeply rooted in, and being proud of the USA!

#14 my impression is that "The Good Professor" from the Beer summit is the head of a DNA project to give a concrete answer to that very question. Most of my friends and Instructors who are from Africa, or have spent much time there, say that they can tell anyone who asks...a region and/or tribe at least. I read a book some years back called "Out of America" that was very good, the author refused to use the term African-American any more after a long trip to Rwanda as a reporter...On the plane home he was startled to find himself thanking God that his forefathers had been brought HERE as slaves.
I've never heard the Term afro-dutch, African-Italian, African-English..it seems to be an exclusively American construct and sounds ridiculous when applied to other Nations.

But we have all heard the terms Italian American, Irish American, Chinese American, and many other such constructs to refer to people who are American, first and foremost...or the term Eur-Asian...

All of this was hotly debated in the 70's and was a complete waste of time...if you are Black and born in Mexico, or Brazil or the US or Panama, aren't you an African American, since those contries are also in one of the American continents?
