| WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is nearing a decision to send more than 30,000 additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan next year, but he may not announce it until after he consults with key allies and completes a trip to Asia later this month, administration and military officials have told McClatchy. As it now stands, the administration's plan calls for sending three Army brigades from the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky. and the 10th

Why 34,000 and not 40K? What's his objection to the other 6000? It all suggests a day late and a dollar short. Anything but admit McChrystal was right. This is micromanaging of the war on the order of Jimmy Carter. He really does think he knows more than McChrystal. This is so arbitary and petty. It will make winning harder. He can't allow it to be easy for

I really hate to say this, but someday I hope this miserable, selfish man - along with the hundreds of congressmen, senators, and news slugs who also hate our protectors - really, REALLY need protection by some of America's finest (be they local police, National Guard, Secret Service, or our outstanding military - and they are just NOT THERE.
God help me, but I do fervently hope this comes to pass.

With the military, you can't just pull a number out of the air. The number of men must match up with actual military units. Like an infantry division has about 10000 men. But a division can't go on its own, it has to have certain support units. Instead of telling us it is 34,000 men, I would rather see the unit breakdown.

Dear Leader playing politics with people's lives. This is an attempt to tell Libs that he didn't give the military everything it asked for, while at the same time shielding himself from criticism from the right for not sending troops. A politician was elected, not a leader. Have no doubt that should Afghanistan fall, this will be laid squarely at McCrystal's feet. The Chicago Way! God help our troops!

Read the article and take into account the numbers for support, just to do training and manning a base. That makes it more like 20,000 only for combat purposes.

McChrystal requested 40-60 thousand troops, and that was the second week of August. As a Vet (who served under Carter) BHO makes me sick. BHO&Co have only just begun the humiliation of our beloved armed forces. I also grew up in Chicago, and this clown will get his, but good. He has climbed so high, and so fast. His fall will be spectacular. The problem is how many of US will he take with him.

#11's right. Did you notice how every [higher] number except 40,000 disappeared like dew in the desert?
As for Obama's fall -- he'll make Icarus look like Chuck Yeager!

I hope he leans so far he tips over on his head. Not supporting the troops is gross negligence.

Sending too few troops to get the job done has been a famous formula for failure, as any visitor to the Little Big Horn can tell you.
