DANANG, Vietnam – On the day his side lost the Vietnam War, Hung Ba Le fled his homeland at the age of 5 in a fishing trawler crammed with 400 refugees. Thirty-four years later, he made an unlikely homecoming — as the commander of a U.S. Navy destroyer. Le piloted the USS Lassen on Saturday into Danang, home of China Beach, where U.S. troops frequently headed for R&R during the war, which ended on April

Comments:
This story is so freaking awesome! Compare his story to the American refugees who fled Katrina - big difference.

Awesome story! And what a fine thing it is that we are friends and almost allies with the Vietnamese. They will be a bulwark against the ChiComs.

And our govt let down the many Vietnamise who didn't want to be communists. (Since 1968 I've known many soldiers who served in Vietnam and I heard their stories.) Anyway, this is a story that makes you look at the big picture.

It still makes me ill when I think of the Congress of the U.S. hanging our military, and the Vietnamese and Cambodians out to dry. 2 Million died in each of those countries because of it. Our wonderful military never lost a battle but Congress quit the war. Does it sound like something that is going on right now? I am so ashamed of most of those in Washington D.C.

That story made me cry. His dad led the way, showing his son that he could succeed. Wonderful story.

Commander Le may be headed for the Joint Chiefs. I certainly hope so.

Who won the war again, Viet commies? Whose boat is bigger? Who did better? Yep, the little refugee boy you drove out of the country. Who won the war again?

The Vietnamese taught me how little we MUST have to survive. I remember them squatting beside the road in the pouring rain with all their worldly belongings wrapped in a little plastic covered roll. They survived and convinced me how most of what we think we must have are in fact luxuries. The Vietnamese coming to America have added greatly to our country. My bet is that there are very few on welfare.

Other immigrants should take a cue from the Vietnamese and other Asians. First, learn to speak English and second work hard in school. Isn't it amazing that Le, who arrived here 35 years ago has accomplished much more in 35 years than many other minorities who were born here!!

IMHO, the primary difference between the groups is family structure. Family structure is everything; children from close families excel, children from no family structure fail generation after generation.

The one term that sets my teeth on edge is "single mother"!
