| SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. — Democrats won a special election in New York State’s northernmost Congressional district Tuesday, a setback for national conservatives who heavily promoted a third candidate in what became an intense debate over the direction of the Republican Party. The Democratic candidate, Bill Owens, led with 49 percent of the vote, while the Conservative Party candidate, Douglas L. Hoffman, had 46 percent.

Comments: Blow to right? The Gray Lady has gone bonkers, spinning her way to extinction. All the same, I wonder about the stupidity of those voters. I hope they enjoy their socialism and higher taxes. It's what they voted for and deserve.

Liberals lose Virginia and New Jersey in Blow to the Left (headline you won't see in the NYT)

The Rinos that continued to vote for Scozzafava were the difference in the vote count. If they had voted for Hoffman, he would have won.
Besides, isn't this race just for the unexpired term? Hoffman may be able to pull it off if he runs again next year.

It would have been better to win, but as has been said either way this was a big move forward for the right. In fact, it was a gift (Rush) in the form of Gingrich's snottily endorsed candidate flipping and supporting the Democrat. And she made robocalls for Owens. Gingrich in his fantasy world believes he can keep lying to us, deeply and sincerely. The key to getting rid of him is for Fox News to stop having him on.

Wow! The Democrat was almost beaten by ''a previously unknown 59-year-old accountant from Lake Placid — which is not in the district.'' Looks as if the Democrats have a big problem there.

This woman has zero character. She took $900,000 from the party but when push came to shove she stabbed her party in the back. I guess we'll hear what Rahm promised her for the flip flop.
I was worried all along that a 3rd party candidate would have a hard time winning and we would have been better off with her in the race splitting the liberal vote.
Hoffmn shouldn't have conceded until after the absentee ballots were counted,it would have been interesting what the % was for Owens.
The Maine anti-gay mariage victory is good news also. This offends most people's sensibilities.

Oh man, what a pathetic loser of an article. Is that all you got Slimes? What won't you do and say for your bailout money?

So predictable of the slimes.
There were some mighty lessons beaten in to the GOP leadership with this race and that message will continue to reverberate throughout the year and into the 2010 elections. That's a huge win for conservatives everywhere - regardless of the outcome of the specific race. It has nothing to do with 3rd party candidates, it has to do with who is chosen to be the republican candidate in the first place.
Thank you Mr. Hoffman.

This area of New York is a very sad place indeed. And as long as they continue to believe the thugs will take care of them, they are doomed. The place reminds me of Britain. They all have so much resentment toward those who have more than them. It is a terrible sickness which keeps them in their condition.

#9. And that's exactly how democrats want it.

More precisely, a blow to the Republicans and it was a self-inflicted blow at that. This seat will be up again in 2010 -- only a three-point spread from a virtual unknown doesn't exactly make this win a lock for the Democrats.
If the Republicans can stop acting stupidly and field a viable conservative candidate, they have a chance of winning it back.
If.
