Violent clashes between police and angry crowds erupted on Baltimore’s streets Monday afternoon and into the evening after hundreds had gathered for the funeral of a 25-year-old black man who was fatally injured while in police custody. Dozens of people threw bottles, bricks and other objects at police dressed in riot gear, injuring 15 officers, with two still hospitalized Monday evening. At least 27 people were arrested as of 8:30 Monday evening. The violence prompted Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan to declare a state of emergency and activate state’s National Guard and led Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to institute a week-long

After almost two weeks of tension over the death of Freddie Gray, Baltimore descended into chaos Monday. Roaming gangs of mostly young men clashed with police in the streets, seriously injuring officers; tore open businesses; and looted their stocks. Gov. Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency and called in the National Guard, and state police requested as many as 5,000 reinforcements from neighboring states. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake instituted a weeklong citywide curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. starting Tuesday. Rawlings-Blake blamed the mayhem on "thugs who only want to incite violence and destroy our city." She joined a

One Baltimore mom took matters into her own hands Monday, furiously grabbing her would-be rioter son by the scruff of his neck and dragging him away from the violence. The jaw-dropping encounter captured by WMAR-TV showed a teen boy clad from head to toe in black, including a scarf over his face, and ready to rumble — until Mom stepped in. He had just thrown rocks, WMAR reported, when his mother jumped into action. She grabbed him in the back of his head and smacked the rock thrower several times in the face with her open right palm. “You want to be out here doing this dumb s***?” the concerned, angry mom

There has been quite a bit of news coverage of this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Don’t ask me why. The annual lovefest between Democratic politicians and Democratic journalists hasn’t generated any actual news in a long time. But this year’s event was perhaps notable because it exposed our president’s bitterness, as he approaches the end of his term. Humor is often revealing. Obama began with a joke that would be considered crude in a junior high school locker room: After the midterm elections, my advisors asked me, “Mr. President, do you have a bucket list?” And I said, “Well,

Professor Dorothy Roberts from Penn Law argues that reparations is the answer to the “patriarchal white supremacy” that runs the United States. Via Pundit Press: Dr. Dorothy E. Roberts, who is described by Penn Law as “an acclaimed scholar of race, gender and the law,” believes that the United States is run by “patriarchal white supremacists” and that reparations are, in part, the answer to inequity between African Americans and whites. Dr. Roberts teaches at the University of Pennsylvania and has made appearances on MSNBC. (Tweet) There’s much more on race hustler Roberts here. Roberts likes to talk about the biopolitics

Desalination plants aren´t a good

As surely as the hot, dry Santa Ana winds bring blue skies to the coast and wildfires to the hills, severe California droughts bring calls to build desalination plants up and down the seashore. All that ocean water, begging to be converted to fresh and pumped into our pipelines, would solve our water supply problems instantly and permanently, boosters say. In the coming months, the drumbeat will only get louder. That´s not only because the current drought is the longest and most severe in memory, but because a $1-billion desalination project scheduled to start operating in Carlsbad this fall will

She typically wears her dark hair straight and glossy. But last night, First Lady Michelle Obama unveiled a new, curlier hairstyle for the annual White House Correspondents´ Dinner in Washington DC. Mrs Obama, 51, was spotted sporting tight curls and a glamorous gold dress as she chatted with Hollywood A-listers, politicians and reporters. She was joined at the glittering event by her husband, President Barack Obama, who later spoke in front of attendees and millions of viewers. In his speech, Obama lashed out at seven of his Republican enemies - and also made jokes about both Hillary Clinton and his

WASHINGTON- President Barack Obama on Tuesday criticized those rioting in the streets of Baltimore as "criminals" and "thugs" and argued that broader societal changes are needed to address underlying tensions that exist between African American communities and the police. Making his first remarks on the death of Freddie Gray and the ensuing violence, Obama said fixing the problems experienced in Baltimore, Ferguson, Mo., and other cities will require politically difficult choices on education, criminal justice reform and economic investment in neighborhoods often overlooked until such incidents occur. "If we are serious about solving this problem, then we´re going to need

With massive violence spreading in Baltimore on Monday, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is under fire for a statement she made over the weekend indicating that she ordered the city´s police to give people the "space" to destroy property. "I´ve made it very clear that I work with the police and instructed them to do everything that they could to make sure that the protesters were able to exercise their right to free speech," Rawlings-Blake said in a press conference. "It´s a very delicate balancing act, because, while we tried to make sure that they were protected from the cars and the other things

A father and son were shot dead in an execution-style murder moments after party guests left their home in a quiet neighborhood. Nicholas Pence, 25, and his father David, an oil company manager, had been celebrating a victorious football game in their garage in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Wednesday. But moments after jovially waving goodbye to the last-remaining revelers shortly before midnight, they were both shot dead at close range in an attack that shocked and baffled the quiet community of Metairie. They were found by David´s wife, Nicholas´s mother, who had been in a bedroom when she heard gun

The Clinton Foundation acknowledged Sunday that the nonprofit group “made mistakes” in IRS filings and defended its disclosure of controversial contributions from a Canadian financier, following days of intense public scrutiny about foundation finances. “We made mistakes, as many organizations of our size do, but we are acting quickly to remedy them,” foundation executive Maura Pally wrote on the foundation website. “And [we] have taken steps to ensure they don´t happen in the future.” The donations were called into question last week by Peter Schweizer, author of the soon-to-be-released book “Clinton Cash.” Schweizer found Canadian financier Frank Giustra gave $31.1

This is what you hear from those who support Hillary Clinton: You hear that this upcoming book, “Clinton Cash” by Peter Schweizer, suggesting that she handed out political favors while she was secretary of state like they were party favors as long as it helped raise a ton of dough for her husband’s foundation, is nothing more than a new right-wing conspiracy, against her and against her husband. So now they don’t just come at her on Benghazi, and deleted emails. They come at her and say that a sitting secretary of state spent at least some of her time in
