The Trump Reality Distortion Filter: why so many
US Republicans are suspending their disbelief

As America speeds closer to the first primary elections, supporting Donald Trump increasingly requires a suspension of disbelief. It requires believing, for example, that, when he said of Fox News’ Megyn Kelly that she had “blood coming out of her wherever” (when she was questioning him during a debate) that he wasn’t suggesting anything untoward or misogynistic. It requires believing that when he said the American public won’t put Republican candidate Carly Fiorina in the White House, because “look at that face!” that he was not commenting on her attractiveness. And it requires believing that when he holds his arms

At a campaign rally in Sarasota, Florida today, Donald Trump insisted that he would “never’ mock anyone for their disability, let alone a New York Times reporter. In case you haven’t caught up yet, here’s the basics: Trump said something untrue about Muslims cheering in New Jersey on 9/11, people called him out on it, Trump decided that one paragraph of a report that in no way backs up what he said actually backs up what he said, the reporter of that story confirmed it does not back up what he said, and Trump responded by mercilessly mocking him. And based on

Acknowledging that the motive of the shooter was still unknown, President Obama lashed out at the "easy accessibility of weapons of war on our streets to people who have no business wielding them" in the wake of Friday´s shooting at Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs. An abortion-rights group, meanwhile, was quick to blame undercover videos discussing brokering of baby parts that were released throughout the year by the Center for Medical Progress. Robert Lewis Dear, 57, is scheduled to appear in court Monday. He killed one police officer, University of Colorado Officer Garrett Swasey, in the shootout, and two civilians

Legendary country music artist Willie Nelson told PJM he is a great fan of Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). Nelson was in Washington to receive the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress. The award ceremony featured performances by Neil Young and Rosanne Cash. Given that the country star has been active in the push to legalize marijuana, PJM asked Nelson which candidate he plans to support in the presidential race. “Well, you know, it’s not over yet. I’m still watching the show but I’m a great Bernie and Hillary fan, you

(Video) After a gunman opened fire at a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood on Friday, killing three people and injuring several others, President Obama urged the nation to increase controls over "the easy accessibility of weapons of war." "This is not normal," the president said in a statement Saturday. "We can´t let it become normal." "If we truly care about this -- if we´re going to offer up our thoughts and prayers again, for God knows how many times, with a truly clean conscience -- then we have to do something about the easy accessibility of weapons of war on our

Barack Obama is blowing past all signs of caution on the left lanes of the road of American politics. That’s a dog-bites-man headline that by now is common knowledge. He no longer cares what Americans think of his leadership. His “my way or the highway” handling of the Syrian refugee crisis, which could endanger the homeland, seals it. Though he gave Iran’s stony-faced mullahs all they wanted and more in his nuclear deal, he has dispensed with even pretending to accommodate the concerns to several governors in his scheme to settle thousands of foreign refugees on their soil. Flinging insults

Snapped by her adoring mother, the Duchess of Cambridge, this is little Princess Charlotte at six months old. Not seen in public since her christening in July, two photographs of the fourth in line to the throne have today been released by Kensington Palace as a thank you to the British media for giving William and Kate´s children the chance to grow up away from the spotlight. With her thick brunette hair, Charlotte is very much her mother´s daughter, in contrast to her elder brother, Prince George, two, who has inherited his father´s blonde locks. To hear Hillary Clinton tell it, she was named for Sir Edmund Hillary, the conqueror of Mount Everest — even though she was already 6 years old when he made his famous ascent. On a visit to war-torn Bosnia in 1996, she claimed she and her entourage landed under sniper fire and had to run “with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base” — although videos of her arrival show her waltzing serenely across the tarmac, waving to the crowd. She blamed the 2012 attack on American diplomatic and intelligence-gathering installations in Benghazi on “a disgusting

THE presidential candidate who has most harmed American politics this year is Donald Trump, a bully who has prospered by inciting rage. Yet from the narrower perspective of the Republican Party, the most dangerous candidate of the 2016 pack may just be Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, who is rising in the polls by telling conservative activists a seductive but misleading story about how their party wins elections. Since launching his presidential run, the 44-year-old Texan has built his campaign around a simple pitch: assuring the most conservative third of the Republican electorate, from born-again Christian voters to hardline members of

A federal program, once launched, is impossible to kill. It doesn’t matter if the scheme wastes money. It doesn’t matter if the program doesn’t work. It doesn’t even matter if the program does the very opposite of what it is supposed to do. Every government program enters the world with an army of fairy godmothers prepared to fend off any effort to cut the cord. Hence, the staying power of ethanol.

A suspected burglar who attempted to enter a California home through the chimney died on Saturday after the homeowner lit a fire without realizing anyone was inside, police said. The man appeared to have climbed into the chimney during the night while the owner was away and then became stuck, according to the Fresno County Sheriff´s Office. After the owner of the home in Huron lit a fire in his fireplace Saturday afternoon, he heard a man yelling inside the chimney as the house filled with smoke, the sheriff´s office said in a statement. The homeowner tried to extinguish the

(Video) Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” op-ed columnist for The Washington Post Michael Gerson said it’s time to “confront” GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump and his followers. Host John Dickerson asked, “Let me ask Michael about this. Donald Trump has offended a lot of different groups and lot of controversy, this year he operated new ground. He appeared, we’re going to watch here for a second to make fun of disabled newspaper reporter,” he continued, “Trump denies that he was impersonating the reporter at the event, the reporter is with the “New York Times” he has a disability Trump
