‘We’re broken here.’ Mexico
Beach reels in the aftermath
of Hurricane Michael

Tampa Bay Times, by Zachary T. Sampson

Original Article

Posted By:Hazymac, 10/12/2018 10:16:38 AM

MEXICO BEACH — Walking around his shattered beachfront town, Mayor Al Cathey repeated the stunned refrain of many residents along the sleepy Florida coast: We didn’t know it would be this bad. On Thursday, dawn broke over total wreckage. Splintered wood, mangled cars and washing machines littered the streets. Attics were torn from their frames and deposited hundreds of yards away, with totes still stowed in the eaves. "We’re broken here," said Cathey, 71. "This devastation is beyond. I think it’s sort of obvious we need some help." The mayor said he had a list of phone numbers for emergency management

Comments:
Mexico Beach took the full force of Hurricane Michael, and today the town is essentially gone. 280 of the town´s 1,200 rode the storm out. I hope they made it through. The damage is unbelievable.

It looks like a lot of people were lucky, if that many stayed in place. That is very good news.

A cautionary tale for future brave fools who want to "ride it out" within 5 miles of the coast, or when the winds exceed about 125 mph.

Best wishes for recovery, but I realized when I was 13 years old, after weathering my second hurricane, about 10 miles inland or more each time that you really need to get out of the way when nature has a tantrum. Now living in KS, that is the far less predictable tornadoes, and rarely, a totally unpredictable microburst. But, for hurricanes, you have days to grab your most precious things and leave, and you know where the worst damage will be - on the immediate coast. I helped clean up the fallen trees for a week last year in Florida for family. Hurricanes are not to be trifled with if you live within a short distance of the beach.

I was impressed with squadrons of power company bucket trucks arriving yesterday. Let´s hope power is restored quickly.

Our local station here in Jacksonville flew its news helicopter over the destruction in Mexico Beach so that we could get an idea of the damage from the storm. It reminded me of the towns of Waveland and Long Beach in Mississippi just after Katrina. While New Orleans got all of the attention because of the flooding and their incompetent mayor, Waveland and Long Beach were ground zero for the hurricane and were literally scrubbed from the face of the earth! So they picked themselves up, dusted off their knees and buttcheeks, and set about putting things back together.

There are still scars today, as can be expected after such an experience, but both towns have rebuilt better than before. Mexico Beach shall rise again as well!!

FTA: "Once noon came around, it was just pure chaos," he said. The wind shook the first-floor condo where he and his family took shelter. He feared the walls would collapse.

"I thought: This is it," he said. "I’m going to die."

On September 11, 2017 Hurricane Irma´s eye passed twenty miles to our east. I was in a concrete and steel building that easily survived the 110 miles per hour winds that day, but we were lucky that the storm didn´t track down Florida´s west coast. You always want to be on the left side of these storms. We pray for fellow Floridians in the path of Michael. When a storm this intense approaches, get out of its way. The last place you want to be is in a structure that is getting torn apart.

Have you seen the aerial videos of Mexico Beach? If you have not, optimism about how quickly they can clean up this ravaged place, let alone restore it, are wildly off the mark. As it is now they cannot travel most of the highway through there, let alone the smaller surface streets.

The videos are at the CTH post. One in particular - 20-some minutes long without sound - done by Sky News is particularly heartbreaking. You must see it with your own eyes to understand its scope and magnitude.

Advice to the city: Dig out, clean up, rebuild.

It will take weeks to rebuild the power/sewer infrastructure. Use that time to plan how to rebuild.

I believe that some of the problem is that some ´Experts", within 24 hrs of landfall, said that Michael might intensify to a Category 2, and a lot of people that live on the coasts don´t take a Cat 2 seriously. By the time they knew it was much more than that, it may have been too late. And I´m saying it was a Cat5, because 1mph is within the margin of error as measurements go.

As stated in a previous post. This storm exploded from a Cat 1 to almost a Cat 5 in 24 hours. Not even the weather people saw that coming. The people in it´s path were prepared to wait out a probably Cat 2 storm, and by the time they found out how strong it was, it was too late to leave.

The FBI set former national security advisor Michael Flynn up. That is about all we can make of the latest revelation that the FBI made serious breaches of protocol when it set up the Jan. 24, 2017, meeting with Flynn to ask him about his Dec. 2016 conversations with Russian ambassador Sergey Kisylak. We now know the FBI did not go through the White House counsel first, suggest Flynn have a lawyer present, or advise him of his rights prior to the interview. Former FBI director James Comey even appeared on MSNBC to brag about the breach, stating:

Jim Geraghty asks “Who’s Equipped to Hold the Trump Coalition Together?” He concludes: "There is no natural ideological successor, which suggests that if or when Trump retires after two terms, is defeated after one, is impeached, or however he departs the stage, there will be no one who will be able to bring together the same factions in the same way." Geraghty’s last three words — “in the same way” — are key. Trump is sufficiently unorthodox that it’s unrealistic to think an ideological successor who convincingly subscribes to the full menu of Trumpism will emerge.

For 2500 years a consistent criticism of giving political power to the masses has been the question of competence. To critics like Socrates and Plato, the knowledge of history, philosophy, and facts necessary for governing are beyond the abilities of the average citizen. Hoi polloi had to spend their time making a living rather than studying these disciplines, or they were by nature driven more by their self-interest, appetites, and passions than by the rational search for knowledge of the true and good. Thus from Plato’s Republic to today’s progressive technocrats, some form of technocracy has been preferable to rule

In June 2016, I was in London and reported extensively on the Brexit referendum in these pages (see here, for example, and here, here, here, and here). It was, briefly, an ebullient moment. I had been assured by everyone from taxicab drivers to Tory ministers that Brexit hadn’t a chance in hell of passing, and a good thing, too, because it represented “nativist,” “racist,” and “xenophobic” (not to mention Islamophobic and economically illiterate) elements of the population.
