Ted Cruz gets good news from a new
Senate poll less than a month before election

Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz maintains a sizable lead in his re-election bid, a poll released Thursday shows. With less than a month until the Nov. 6 midterm election, Cruz holds a 9 percentage point lead — 54 to 45 percent, the same lead he held last month — over Democratic challenger U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke of El Paso among likely voters, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll. “Is the Beto bubble bursting or just hissing away with a slow leak?” asked Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

Somebody is spending money out the wazoo to get Beto elected and he´s going nowhere. I hope we´ve seen the last of him but the delusional clowns never seem to go away, they just get more desperate with age. I give you It´s-my-Turn Hillary and Share-the-Wealth Bernie.

I have no reason to trust this poll more than any others. Sowing the seeds of complacency?

Anything less than a double digit butt kicking will be blared as a dim victory. Vote, Texans, vote.

And Ted Cruz is still going to run like it´s a two point race ... which could give him a double digit win.

If I still lived in Texas, I would vote for him. I would have to give him a piece of my mind about what a "donkey" he made of himself at the republican convention, but then I would vote for him.

Former San Antonio mayor and Obama administration cabinet member Julián Castro is launching a presidential exploratory committee ahead of a scheduled January 12 announcement about his future political plans. “Some people might say that it’s early, but I believe you have to be decisive,” he told the Associated Press in an interview Wednesday, adding that he will spend the next month traveling and listening to people—and likely trying to generate commitments of support from key Democrats. “I know where I’m leaning for sure.” An adviser said the 44-year-old Castro has all but decided to throw his hat

The aim of the victims’ rights movement, which arose in the 1970s and has swept through every state in the union and changed federal laws in the years since, is often summed up simply: Crime victims have the right to be “informed, present and heard.” All these rights were trampled by Alexander Acosta, formerly the U.S. attorney in South Florida and currently U.S. secretary of labor, when he struck a secret deal with wealthy sex offender Jeffrey Epstein to shield Epstein from federal investigation and prosecution.Though Acosta was in possession of a 53-page draft indictment charging that the well-connected financier

During his fourteen years as Texas governor, Rick Perry was always a big picture guy who led the chief executive’s office sort of like Captain Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek fame. Gather the staff around. Knock around options. Then the captain would declare: Make it so. This is a polite way of saying Rick Perry—whose name has been popping up lately as a potential chief of staff for President Donald Trump—was not a detail kind of guy. Ten years ago, Bernard Madoff’s multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme, the biggest fraud in U.S. history, shocked the financial world. It soon emerged that a forensic accountant, Harry Markopolos, had been alerting regulators for years to Mr. Madoff’s fraud, but no one had listened. At Mr. Markopolos’s urging, the Securities and Exchange Commission created a cash-for-tips program, designed to encourage reports of financial wrongdoing and prevent the lapses in oversight that gave Mr. Madoff free rein. Today, an entire industry is devoted to surfacing tips from company insiders and expert analysts who scrutinize corporate filings.

George H.W. Bush wasn’t born in Texas, as the saying goes, but he got here as soon as he graduated from Yale. Over the next seven decades, he left an imprint on the Lone Star State that is matched by only a few. His legacy, however, may be defined as much by his quiet acts of generosity as by any grandiose act of statesmanship. Here, five Texans reflect on the man they once knew. Robert Mueller looks to be approaching his endgame, and the press is alive with speculation as to how bad the special counsel’s report will be for President Trump. It’s also worth noticing how good Mr. Mueller has been to another president, Barack Obama, and his team. This benevolence was on display in the sentencing document the special counsel’s office filed on Tuesday for Mike Flynn. The former Trump national security adviser, we are told, has provided “substantial assistance,” sitting for 19 interviews that aided in “several ongoing investigations.” In light of this help, the Mueller team

The Global Carbon Tax Revolt

France’s violent Yellow Vest protests are now about many domestic concerns, but it’s no accident that the trigger was a fuel-tax hike. Nothing reveals the disconnect between ordinary voters and an aloof political class more than carbon taxation. The fault line runs between anti-carbon policies and economic growth, and France is a test for the political future of emissions restrictions. France already is a relatively low-carbon economy, with per-capita emissions half Germany’s as of 2014. French governments have nonetheless pursued an “ecological transition” to further squeeze carbon emissions from every corner

Attorney Charles Harder defended more than 500 hours his firm spent that rang up a nearly $390,000 legal bill for the president and asked for an equal amount in sanctions as a deterrent against a “repeat filer or frivolous defamation cases.” Harder said the fees and penalties were earned because of the extraordinary nature of the defamation case.

The NeverTrump movement has gone from pushing allegations that Donald Trump treasonously colluded with Russia to steal the 2016 presidential election from its rightful owner Hillary Clinton, to pretending that his attempts at business deals in Russia, which were legal and the subject of widespread reporting during the election, are evidence of unspecified crimes. Another day, another avalanche of news about the President: berating Democratic leaders on camera; unceremoniously announcing the departure of his chief of staff; calling his former Secretary of State “dumb as a rock.” It never lets up. Trump is a ubiquitous, suffocating presence in American life. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. The modern presidency is the framers’ worst nightmare, a flatly unconstitutional concentration of power. As the Trump era has made abundantly clear, the office itself — its size, scope, and prominence in American life — is the driving force of dysfunction in our politics.
