Man planned to set off 200-pound bomb
on Mall in Washington, FBI says

Washington Post, by Dana Hedgpeth

Federal authorities have arrested and charged a New York state man who they say planned to build a 200-pound bomb and detonate it on Election Day on the Mall in Washington. Paul M. Rosenfeld, 56, of Tappan, N.Y., was charged Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York with unlawfully manufacturing a destructive device and interstate transportation and receipt of an explosive, according to the FBI. Officials said he planned to use the bomb to kill himself and gain attention to a political belief called sortition, in which politicians are chosen at random instead of by elections.

Knowing extremely little about Harry Potterisms, but would that ´Sorting Hat´, #1, be magical and doing some sorting process to select the best students?

I think the sortition is from ancient Greece, IIRC.

A man who believed in sortition
Thought he would go see the mortition.
His plan was to die,
Blowing up to the sky,
But he bombed and he´s charged with sedition.

Sounds like a good idea to me. We´ll pick our representatives at random out of the phone book. Couldn´t be much worse than what we have today.

I think the authorities are confusing this with the rumor that 200 crazed liberals were going to force feed themselves at Denny´s and defecate uncontrollably on the Capital steps. They had to give up the idea when no one wanted to eat at Denny´s.

Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren admitted on Friday that she is not a person of color, despite recently seeking to prove that she has Native American ancestry. In October, Warren released a DNA test in an attempt to combat President Donald Trump’s many attacks on her alleged Native American ancestry. The test results showed that she has a Native American ancestor “in the range of 6–10 generations ago.” But during a commencement address at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, on Friday, Warren made clear that she does not consider herself a person of color. “I’m not a person of

For too long, the Department of Justice and the FBI have pursued high profile investigations with virtually unlimited power. They often intimidate and humiliate subjects and terrorize their family, friends and associates. And the courts have even allowed them to use trickery and deceit as a legal tool during interrogation. But as the saying goes, “power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Dec. 9 marked 10 years to the day since then-FBI Director Robert Mueller directed federal agents to arrest Rod during that now infamous predawn raid. And it was only recently that we learned that they brought with them

A 7-year-old illegal immigrant girl died last week after being caught jumping the border with her parent, the apparent victim of the rough journey north through Mexico, Homeland Security said Friday morning. She was found Dec. 6 by Border Patrol agents, reportedly part of a large group of Central Americans who’d just crossed into the U.S. She was in Border Patrol custody for eight hours, and agents noticed she was having seizures and had a fever of 105.7 degrees. She was taken by air ambulance to a hospital in El Paso, had a heart attack, was revived but did not

Poor Democrats. They just aren’t used to being treated this way. They just aren’t used to the fight. Look at how they’re having to rush to the defensive in recent days — first, with President Donald Trump in the White House, then with press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, doing the media thing. Anybody watching Sen. Chuck Schumer sit, shoulders sagged, hands in lap, stiff smile upon face, as he listened to Trump turn tables and take responsibility for a government shutdown so long as it came as a way of standing firm on border control for the American people —

Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker did not violate the Hatch Act when his campaign account from a failed 2014 Senate bid accepted four donations totaling nearly $9,000 earlier this year, campaign finance experts said. But most of the money is still sitting in the campaign’s account because William Gustoff, the campaign’s treasurer, is waiting to make sure he can use it to pay back a loan to Mr. Whitaker, who is still owed $50,000 from a personal loan he made to his Senate bid. Mr. Whitaker’s critics have questioned the donations — one complaint among a host of arrows

Former Congressman John Dingell, Jr., a partisan Democrat whose immediate family has controlled the same seat in the House of Representatives for 86 years, has some suggestions for fixing Congress. We should abolish the Senate and the Electoral College because they´re undemocratic, "despite the constitutional hurdles of doing so." In 2015, Dingell retired from the U.S. House seat he´s held since 1955, the seat he inherited from his father, John Dingell, Sr., who first won it in 1932. The seat has passed to John Jr.´s much-younger wife, Rep. Debbie Dingell, who was just re-elected in November.

Around Christmastime, everyone´s rushing here and there, agitated, sometimes even a bit angry, as they juggle a hundred things ahead of the holiday. And that´s what makes what happened in Nashville on Saturday truly remarkable. Hundreds of people were packed into the airport awaiting their flights when an airline attendant announced over a loudspeaker that children of fallen service members were boarding their flight. The kids were being flown to Disneyworld on an all-expenses trip. Everyone in the airport stopped as "The Star Spangled Banner" was performed, with soldiers saluting the children. Whatever you might think of the Bush dynasty’s legacy, no one can ever accuse the family of not showing class and decency. When Wisconsin Republicans pushed through a sweeping set of bills Wednesday to limit the power of the state’s newly elected Democrats, it was another hardball maneuver by a man who has played a key role in driving the state sharply to the right. In the days after the Republican governor’s stunning loss last month — the end of eight years of one-party control of the state’s government — Robin Vos, the Republican speaker of the Assembly, was defiant. “We are going to stand like bedrock to guarantee that Wisconsin does not go back,” Mr. Vos told local reporters after the midterms.

Another day, another avalanche of news about the President: berating Democratic leaders on camera; unceremoniously announcing the departure of his chief of staff; calling his former Secretary of State “dumb as a rock.” It never lets up. Trump is a ubiquitous, suffocating presence in American life. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. The modern presidency is the framers’ worst nightmare, a flatly unconstitutional concentration of power. As the Trump era has made abundantly clear, the office itself — its size, scope, and prominence in American life — is the driving force of dysfunction in our politics.

Going all in on attacking President Trump isn’t proving to be a particularly effective business strategy for media outlets. The Weekly Standard, a 28-year old neoconservative institution, is reportedly headed towards dissolution after its founder, Bill Kristol, devoted almost three years of work to attacking the President and his supporters. A federal judge in Texas late Friday threw the health coverage of some 20 million Americans in limbo by ruling Obamacare must be scrapped because Congress struck the penalty for failing to obtain insurance coverage. The invalidation of the landmark 2010 law is certain to send shock waves through the U.S. health system and Washington after a midterm election seen in part as a rebuke to Republican efforts to tear down Obamacare.
