The stock market on the Orient Express
PJ Media, by David P. Goldman [Spengler]

Original Article

Everybody did it in Agatha Christie´s novel Murder on the Orient Express, and the same problem bedevils the US stock market today. A dozen co-conspirators killed the victim in the Christie novel. Here are a dozen factors that bedevil the stock market: 1) Bond yields continue to rise even while the broad stock market indices tank an unusual event. That, as I argued earlier this week, is in part due to the overstretching of bank balance sheets, which makes it hard for foreign investors to hedge currency risk in US portfolios. 2) Corporations spend more buying back their own stock than

Thanks for the post. As always, Spengler is succinct in his analysis. Of the dozen, my greatest concern is #11 and that China will not, or cannot, meet the US on mutually agreeable terms.

Respectfully, the market is pricing in the risk that the Dems could regain some power this election and derail President Trump and the US.
The Dems have told everyone what they will do, and it will be bad. Portfolio managers in the market correctly have to prepare for that.
The other probable large equity market seller recently, were some insurance companies raising some funds for Florida claims.

My beef with many of the dire warnings is based on an unstated assumption that business does not know what they are doing. The concern over corporations buying back their stock, instead of spending most of their profits on expanding, hiring, etc. assumes that a corporation will never do those things, and just wants to buy back their stock and remain as they are.

Successful corporations have strategies to protect themselves and ensure survival. They plan ahead for contingencies and are very careful about expenditures- unlike government. They will expand and hire when they see the benefit of doing so, not as a social program. Overextending is a dangerous thing for business. Unlike government, it cannot just take money to cover bad management.

When it reaches 10% drop, which would be 2500 points, it is a correction. Time to buy. Otherwise, just noise, relax.

WASHINGTON – Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives, said Apple believes it can achieve the “ambitious goal” to one day make all of its products “using only recycled materials and renewable resources, reducing the need to mine materials from the earth.” When it comes to combating climate change, Jackson said there shouldn’t be any “conflict” between a “healthy planet and a healthy bottom line.” “Now that’s an ambitious goal, one would say a moonshot goal, but it’s one that we believe we can reach because we’re going to use those bright minds in science,” Jackson

For 2500 years a consistent criticism of giving political power to the masses has been the question of competence. To critics like Socrates and Plato, the knowledge of history, philosophy, and facts necessary for governing are beyond the abilities of the average citizen. Hoi polloi had to spend their time making a living rather than studying these disciplines, or they were by nature driven more by their self-interest, appetites, and passions than by the rational search for knowledge of the true and good. Thus from Plato’s Republic to today’s progressive technocrats, some form of technocracy has been preferable to rule

AFP reported Saturday that “experts” say “Western powers fighting Islamist groups around the globe are condemned to a never-ending battle if they only tackle the symptoms and not the underlying causes of jihadist insurgency.” That is true, but these establishment “experts” have no idea of the actual underlying causes, and are recommending the same counterterror remedies that have failed again and again. “The West is on the road to winning all the battles and losing the war,” warns Katherine Zimmerman, who wrote a recent report for the American Enterprise Institute. On that, Zimmerman is actually right. But she and her

In June 2016, I was in London and reported extensively on the Brexit referendum in these pages (see here, for example, and here, here, here, and here). It was, briefly, an ebullient moment. I had been assured by everyone from taxicab drivers to Tory ministers that Brexit hadn’t a chance in hell of passing, and a good thing, too, because it represented “nativist,” “racist,” and “xenophobic” (not to mention Islamophobic and economically illiterate) elements of the population. For me, as for a tiny coterie of friends, Brexit was centrally about sovereignty. The guiding question that precipitated it was Who Rules Britain?

The elite wanted a world without God and they got it. Andrew Sullivan argues that with the decline of traditional religions the godless world has embraced political cults. They are finding the resulting world an uncongenial place. (Snip) But Sullivan´s timeline is wrong. The death of God was announced more than a century ago appropriately enough, by Nietschze´s fictional madman. He already foresaw the vacuum that would come. "Is there still any up or down? Are we not straying, as through an infinite nothing? ... God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him." What

It’s hard to say with certainty whether Christine Blasey Ford has memory issues, mental problems, or is just a liar, but it is crystal clear that her allegations that she was sexually assaulted by Brett Kavanaugh aren’t true. So, when Sports Illustrated shoehorned her into announcing an award, it seemed really strange. (Snip) Of course, people get very angry when you point out the obvious fact that Ford made a false allegation. You get told, “This is why women who are sexually assaulted don’t come forward.” You should blame Ford for that. She’s the one

"One key thing: It actually wasn´t about Trump, or only about Trump on the margins. This was far more in the nature of a weird personal vendetta," Podhoretz tweeted. One wonders if Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi have any concept how pathetic and clueless their politically motivated, anti- border wall clichés look in light of the latest terror attack in Strasbourg. Their insistence, in Tuesday´s meeting with Trump, that the wall by itself would not be a panacea--whoever said it was?--and that we don´t have the Islamist threat the Israelis or even the Europeans do to justify its construction now seems extraordinarily simple-minded. In fact it always was. Under the radar and barely remarked upon by our media, that cross-border terror threat has already done something even worse
