Venezuela and Brazil´s
Trump of the Tropics triumph

American Thinker, by Monica Showalter

Original Article

In Venezuela, Hugo Chávez used to be called "Tropical Trotsky." In Brazil today, Jair Bolsonaro, who just won the first round of Brazil´s election by a gargantuan and "unexpected" margin, is called "Tropical Trump." Polls, after all, had Bolsonaro and his leftist rival, Fernando Haddad, running about even, and boy, were they wrong. Bolsonaro beat his leftist rival, surprise, surprise, by two to one. Here´s what you see when you Google Bolsonaro now: Tropical Trump, indeed, and the media and their allies say that as if it´s a bad thing.

Comments:
A mortal, cringing, horror of being the next Venezuela.

Roberts raps Trump for

WASHINGTON — Chief Justice John Roberts is pushing back against President Donald Trump for his description of a judge who ruled against Trump’s migrant asylum policy as an “Obama judge.” It’s the first time the Republican-appointed leader of the federal judiciary has offered even a hint of criticism of Trump, who has previously blasted federal judges who ruled against him. Roberts said Wednesday the U.S. doesn’t have “Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges.” He commented in a statement released by the Supreme Court after a query by The Associated Press. Roberts said on the day before

Caravan migrants have heard a lefty judge´s ruling to block President Trump´s executive order halting asylum claims from foreigners who have illegally crossed into the U.S., and sure enough, are taking it as a ´ready-set-go´ opening gun. They´re telling the press they´re set to illegally enter the U.S. because the penalty for entering illegally is now off, thanks to the Ninth Circuit´s lefty Judge Jon S. Tigar. It´s just as I suspected would happen yesterday, because people know an incentive when they see one. According to the Associated Press: TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) — Migrants

President Donald Trump railed against the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and federal Judge Jon Tigar, who on Monday blocked the administration´s plan to restrict asylum claims at the southern border as the migrant caravan begins to collect in Tijuana, Baja California Norte. As Fox News reported: A federal judge in San Francisco on Monday barred the Trump administration from refusing asylum to immigrants who cross the southern border illegally, likely prompting a legal challenge from the White House. Trump issued a proclamation on Nov. 9 that said anyone who crossed

TIJUANA, Mexico — Migrants stranded in Tijuana are complaining about cramped living spaces, exposure to the cold at night, limited access to food and safety concerns. The makeshift shelter they´ve been living in for almost a week is nearing capacity, and more migrants are on the way to this border community. More than 2,500 migrants, hailing mostly from Honduras and to a lesser extent from other Central American countries and Mexico, are staying at Unidad Deportiva Benito Juárez, a sports complex in Tijuana´s north end. Another 3,400 are in nearby Mexicali, about 90 miles away, according to the state officials.

WASHINGTON — The Department of Homeland Security is gathering intelligence from paid undercover informants inside the migrant caravan that is now reaching the California-Mexico border as well as monitoring the text messages of migrants, according to two DHS officials. The 4,000 migrants, mainly from Honduras, have used WhatsApp text message groups as a way to organize and communicate along their journey to the California border, and DHS personnel have joined those groups to gather that information. The intelligence gathering techniques are combined with reports from DHS personnel working in Mexico

For awhile there, an orderly border entry process was taking place at Tijuana, with thousands of applicants for asylum taking a number and waiting their turn to make their claims. It made more sense to try to immigrate legally than illegally, given that President Trump issued a national security order saying that asylum claims would only be processed at a U.S. port of entry. Which was why the Tijuana residents protested the other day - they didn´t want these people hanging around, given the large numbers of criminals in their ranks, 500 at last count,

More than 500 criminals are traveling with the migrant caravan that’s massed on the other side of a San Diego border crossing, homeland security officials said Monday afternoon. The revelation was made during a conference call with reporters, with officials asserting that "most of the caravan members are not women and children". They claimed the group is mostly made up of single adult or teen males and that the women and children have been pushed to the front of the line in a bid to garner sympathetic media coverage. “All legal options are on the table and we have been

Huge protests engulfed Tijuana over the weekend over the migrant caravan. They were loud, noisy, politically incorrect, and based on the photos that ran in the Mexican press, very large, at least a thousand participants. Tijuana, unlike a lot of the rest of Mexico, has a civil society culture, featuring everything from charity groups, to art museum lovers, to beach cleanup crews, to neighborhood watch groups, and well, the latter got busy and organized those protests. Here´s a screengrab showing the size of the activity from Reforma, a top Mexican news organization. It´s subscription-only, but

TIJUANA, Mexico — Many Central American migrants camped in Tijuana after crossing Mexico in a caravan said Monday that a protest over the weekend by residents demanding they leave frightened them and left them even more anxious while they try to get into the United States. The angry protests have been fed by concerns raised by President Donald Trump’s month-long warnings that criminals and gang members are in the group and even terrorists, though there is no evidence of that. About 500 people demonstrated in an affluent section of Tijuana on Sunday against the caravan.

With zero fear of being called racists - even in Mexico, because the light-and-bright elites live in Mexico City - Tijuana´s neighborhood groups staged some amazingly politically incorrect protests as a means of getting their message out. To an American observer, the sorts of things being said are positively jaw-droppingly raw. Here´s the big sign at the Cuauhtemoc statue at a key roundabout that sort of serves as Tijuana´s town square, taken as a screengrab from major Mexican media outlet Reforma:

Trump is out there, plain as day, advising Democrats to go on, Beav, pick San Francisco Democrat Nancy Pelosi as their next House Speaker. Do it. It´s actually pretty funny. TIJUANA, Mexico — Hundreds of Tijuana residents, opposed to what they described as the "chaos" of the Central American migrant caravan, gathered at a prominent roundabout in Tijuana Sunday morning, before marching to a large, makeshift shelter, which now holds about 2,400 migrants. They chanted “Mexico! Mexico!” and “yes to migrants, no to invaders!” They sang the national anthem and waved Mexican flags and banners and signs, with messages urging the migrants to go home and urging the government to take action. Some protesters said Mexico doesn’t have the resources to care for its own people,

California Gov. Democrat Stacey Abrams isn´t backing down from her fight against what she calls voter suppression tactics and election mismanagement after losing the Georgia governor´s race. In fact, Abrams said she experienced the problems in her state firsthand — after nearly being denied a ballot during early voting. In an interview with Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep, the Democratic gubernatorial nominee said that when she went to vote last month, a poll worker initially told her that she had requested an absentee ballot and couldn´t cast an in-person vote. Abrams replied that she never filed for an absentee ballot, and after

Peggy Noonan’s intense dislike for President Donald Trump undermines her credibility as a fair and balanced columnist: She cannot be true to her trade when she hates the objects of her pen. With the Trumps, she has lost all sense of balance. Her unwarranted attack on First Lady Melania Trump last weekend in the Wall Street Journal is plain ugly. In a column titled “Melania’s Misstep and Michelle’s Mystery,” Noonan declares her love for former first lady Michelle Obama after reading her memoir, Becoming. Noonan should know by now that every auto-biographer blows his/her own trumpet.

For the first time satellite and cable TV providers lost more than a million subscribers from July through September this year. To be exact, they lost 1.1 million customers.
