Resilient flag shredded by Florence off NC
coast ‘represents who we are as America’

Richard Neal, the owner of a bed-and-breakfast 32 miles off the coast of North Carolina in old Coast Guard tower, says he fielded several angry calls from veterans as Hurricane Florence approached. That’s because his B&B at Frying Pan Tower is also the home of one of the many Explore.org live cams that have been documenting the storm as it rumbled toward the Carolina coast. And also because, that live footage at times has shown the tower’s American flag, being shredded by the devastating rain and wind the storm is bringing with it. “They told me, ‘this is disrespectful,’ and

On the shore dimly seen,
through the mists of the deep,
Where the foes haughty host
in dread silence reposes;
What is that which the breeze,
o´er the towering steep,
as it fitfully blows,
half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning´s first beam,
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream.
´Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave o´er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

I agree. Ever see what one of those battle standards looked like in 1865? I´d call those color bearers pretty patriotic.

A prototype of a censored search engine that links users´ queries to their personal phone numbers is the result of a collaboration between Google and China. This technology would make it easier for the Communist Party of China to monitor people and what they are searching, the Intercept reported Friday. Dragonfly, the code name for the new search engine, was designed for Android devices. The search engine would remove information that the Chinese government deems sensitive, like content regarding political dissidents, free speech, democracy, human rights, and protests, in something called a censorship blacklist. The blacklist includes the terms “human

WILMINGTON, N.C.-A crowd bordering on a mob formed in Wilmington Saturday as the first grocery store opened in four days, drawing 500 storm-soaked residents to push through the doors. After two days in darkness, the city saw electricity return to a two-block grid on College Avenue. Hurricane Florence victims with internet access saw the grocery’s notice go up on Facebook. But most saw the line stretching around the side of the store and simply joined it. As doors opened at 10 a.m., Harris Teeter employees loudly warned shoppers elbowing each other at the door to be civil, and that Wilmington

President Trump tweeted out a trio of endorsements Saturday, giving the nod to Rep. Pete Sessions, Rep. Keith Rothfus, and Danny Tarkanian in three tight congressional races. Sessions faces a challenge from former NFL player and Democrat Colin Allred as he seeks re-election in Texas´ 32nd Congressional District, which he has represented since 2002. RealClearPolitics rates the race a toss-up in a district Hillary Clinton won in 2016. (Tweet) The race in Pennsylvania´s 17th Congressional District between Rothfus and his Democratic rival Rep. There´s no place for mean girls at this school! A Michigan high school has decided to stop crowning homecoming queens amid bullying issues. Chelsea High School decided to stop the ´outdated´ tradition because of its competitive and stereotypical nature, according to a Student Council letter. The homecoming queen process often left girls feeling pitted against each other, bullied or with hurt feelings. ´We don´t want one of the biggest awards at our school to be associated with "pretty" or "popular" stereotypes or to be limited to a specific category of students,´ Student Council President Drew Vanderspool wrote in the letter.

Seeking to preempt criticism that his talks violated US laws prohibiting private citizens from advising or negotiating with foreign states, he said he merely wanted to see “what Iran might be willing to do in order to change the dynamic in the Middle East.” Even if Kerry violated no laws, a more self-aware statesman would recognize that such freelance diplomacy weakens the US, emboldens enemies and has a track record of failure.

Conceived in Germany during the run-up to World War II, the Beetle became an icon of the American counterculture during the Vietnam War. But it lost momentum following the twin oil shocks of the 1970s and, despite two attempts to rebuild its appeal with complete makeovers, it has been little more than a largely forgotten niche vehicle in recent years.
