Obama’s baack! But which party will he

Here’s an interesting question to ponder on an early autumn weekend: You probably remember Barack Obama. He was president for 96 months or 417 weeks or 2,922 days. For some of us, that translates into an interminable 252,460,800 seconds. [Snip] So, here’s the weekend’s top question: Who will a campaigning Obama help more — Democrats, who now think of him more fondly than they did at the time, or Republicans, who’ll be reminded by that unctuous voice why they really, really need to vote on Nov. 6? At least once. It’s not like Democrats have a wide choice of

All white male cast. Where´s the diversity the Dems always scream about? Oh yes, forgot Spartacus, now playing in poor, minority communities. Maybe Harris who is everyone´s ex-wife, about likable as The Pantsuit.

Is there any doubt as to which faith he believes in: Christianity or Islam?

According to him, the Muslim call to prayer is the most beautiful sound he´s ever heard.

Contrary to suggestions of a slow-down, the number of Americans severing their ties to cable and satellite TV soared to the largest number ever during the third quarter this year. For the first time satellite and cable TV providers lost more than a million subscribers from July through September this year. To be exact, they lost 1.1 million customers. Which is a lot of of monthly fees gone poof! Dish TV lost 367,000 satellite subscriber in the third quarter compared to gaining 16,000 in the previous third quarter. Nicolas Maduro, the former Venezuelan bus driver who’s ruled his country by decree for five years now, knows all and sees all. Under his reign of error, Venezuela and its 32 million people have experienced rising crime, violence, corruption, hunger, infectious disease, hyper-inflation and now a record exodus of refugees to neighboring countries. But something new may soon appear on the political radar of Maduro’s socialist, increasingly authoritarian regime: An imminent Trump administration designation as a state sponsor of terrorism possibly followed by a U.S.

Having led Democrats in the House of Representatives for nearly 16 years, four of them as speaker, you’d think Nancy Pelosi would be a shoo-in as the first speaker in six decades to return to that job. But wait just one San Francisco minute. The first female speaker, who turns 79 in March, faces a growing chorus of demands for change from younger members, the very ones her prodigious fundraising and pugnacious politics helped elect and re-elect this month. Not terrorism. Not nuclear war. Not Donald Trump. Not even mugging alone on a dark city street. Americans’ worst fear now is cybercrime, as in being the victim of. Nearly three-in-four Americans cite that as their worst fear these days. Not too far behind is a cousin concern, identity theft. A new Gallup poll finds that 71 percent “frequently or occasionally fear that computer hackers will access their personal, credit card or financial information.” Another 67 percent say

Elections do, indeed, have consequences. And one of the most interesting and perhaps controversial consequences of Nancy Pelosi and Democrats being elected to take control of the House of Representatives come January is their planned rules change to allow religious head covers on the floor of the House. Head covers as in hijabs, Muslim head scarves covering an entire woman’s head except for her face. The new House will have the first two Muslim females. For nearly two centuries, hats have been banned from the House floor. [Snip] According to Pelosi, the ban on the ban

Remember when Democrats mocked last year’s tax-cut legislation? And Nancy Pelosi called the tax breaks for Americans “crumbs”? But President Trump and congressional Republicans said they would ignite a booming economy and actually increase federal tax collections from greater economic activity including more consumer spending, business investments, higher wages and even employee bonuses. Well, guess what? Just 47 weeks after Trump put his flamboyant signature on the bill, it’s all happening. Unemployment is at

The destructive power of these wildfire beasts surpasses words. But we’ll try. Take, for example, the Camp Fire in Northern California. It’s still raging beyond control, has wiped out one entire town, devastated two others, destroyed nearly 10,000 homes and burned 140,000 acres. That’s 219 square miles or about the size of the entire city of Chicago. Now the worst fire in state history, it’s not even half-contained. President Trump visits Saturday. Nancy Pelosi has confidently and perhaps preemptively declared herself the next Speaker of the House. She’d be the first speaker in six decades to regain the top House job with the larger office, paycheck and driver. Of course, it’s not true that she’s already won. The caucus vote isn’t until the end of the month. And enough Democrats have publicly said they want someone else. [Snip] The problem with this nascent rebel Dem caucus is that Pelosi has been a prodigious fundraiser for many members and the rebels had no alternative candidate. Until now.

There are places in this turbulent world where instead of a cute little sticker, people who dare to vote get murdered. Yet here we are in comfy America celebrating a record number of midterm voters whose number doesn’t even equal half of those eligible. Late numbers indicate 49 percent of those eligible cast their ballots in Tuesday’s midterm elections. That means 51 percent of Americans couldn’t be bothered exercising that precious right, even when 37 states allow mail-in ballots and advance voting, some states starting as early as late September. Just too, too busy for five weeks straight, right? So, congratulations laggards.

This is probably the last chance Nancy Pelosi has to become the first former House speaker to regain the job in more than six decades. She’s vowed to do it. But then as the Democrats’ minority leader, she vowed to take back the House for four straight House elections. And she and her party failed every time, starting with the historic 2010 drubbing by Republicans, who seized 63 seats. This week Democrats elected enough Democrats to choose the next House Speaker. The 78-year-old says she wants the job again. Under the pressure of anti-Pelosi GOP ads, several dozen Democrat candidates vowed not to support her in the caucus election

Despite their best efforts, California’s governing Democrats have been unable to spur a sufficient exodus of its over-populated areas. Last year, new figures show, only 130,000 more people fled the state than entered it. And 142,000 the year before that. This has been going on for more than 15 years now. But it still hasn’t made a dent in the over-crowded conditions of the most populous state’s metropolitan areas or in its population of 39.6 million people. That total is still growing by the day because, babies. Apparently, the third largest state is

Scientists say they have uncovered how and why wombats produce cube-shaped poo - the only known species to do so. The Australian marsupial can pass up to 100 deposits of poop a night and they use the piles to mark territory. The shape helps it stop rolling away. Despite having round anuses like other mammals, wombats do not produce round pellets, tubular coils or messy piles. Researchers revealed on Sunday the varied elasticity of the intestines help to sculpt the poop into cubes. Sparked by his narrow defeat in a Texas Senate race, Beto O’Rourke is scrambling the 2020 presidential primary field, freezing Democratic donors and potential campaign staffers in place as they await word of his plans. Even prior to O’Rourke’s meteoric rise, many Democratic fundraisers had approached the large number of 2020 contenders with apprehension, fearful of committing early to one candidate. But the prospect of a presidential bid by O’Rourke, whose charismatic Senate candidacy captured the party’s imagination, has suddenly rewired the race.
