Rally 'Round Our Troops!

Thread 3
Editor's extra:
Sunday, 16 March 2003--
Our mailbox runneth over with information you want to share with your fellow posters in 'Support Of Our Troops'. For example, an LDotter wrote:

Can you please post a url/e-mail address to which we can direct mail to our men and women serving in the military? I have sent e-mails via www.salts.navy.mil/main/troops and it works quite well. It is, however, only for personnel aboard ships. I have gotten some very touching responses and they have spurred me on to spread the word - they really need our support!

This weekend we invite you to our LDot Rally Round-the-table - Support Our Troops!

Comments:

Crew members take their lunch on the mess deck on the USS Theodore Roosevelt Wednesday, March 12. The crew on the TR use mealtimes as a chance to sit with friends in a welcome break from shifts which sometimes exceed 12 hours. The TR heads one of five carrier-based battle groups deployed in the Mediterranean Sea and the Persian Gulf and has been at sea for more the two months.

Operation Uplink is a unique program that keeps military personnel and hospitalized veterans in touch with their families and loved ones by providing them with a free phone card.

Palladin, Igor was sent to bed. No you didn't do anything. The maintenance program cleared the thread and it had to be recreated manually. The first few numbers are off.

Thank you Lucianne for giving us a forum to show our support of our fellow countrymen.
God bless and keep our President.

Reply 7 - Posted by: Prairie Rose, 3/16/2003 9:00:10 AM

Thanks to our troops. Heartfelt thanks. We pray God protects them and we pray for our president and his people who advise them. May all their wisdom come from God. We so appreciate having a president like this man who prays everyday and truly follows His ways. Have mercy on our guys and leaders. God bless our nation.

Don't Know if this is too long, but in honor of our troops I submit this peek into Osama's Ultimate fate:

After dying a grisly death in an Afghan cave, Osama made his
way to the pearly gates. There, he was greeted by George
Washington. "How dare you attack the nation I helped conceive!"
yelled Washington, slapping Osama in the face.

Patrick Henry came up from behind, "You wanted to end the
American's liberty, so they gave you death!" Henry punched
Osama in the nose.

James Madison came next and said, "This is why I allowed the
government to provide for the common defense!" He took a sledge
hammer and whacked Osama's knees.

Osama was subject to similar beatings from John Randolph, James
Monroe and 67 other people who had the same love for liberty
and America. As he writhed on the ground, Thomas Jefferson
hurled him back toward the gate where he was to be judged.

As Osama awaited his journey to his final very hot destination,
he screamed, "This is not what I was promised!" An angel
replied, "I told you there would be 72 Virginians waiting for
you. What did you think I said?"

Back on the Home Page there's an article posted from today's NY POST, wherein it's stated that some of OUR Marines are under BRITISH Command! It's also noted that our commanders are wary of discussing this. NO KIDDING!

This is an abomination and violates policy and principles going back to 1917 set by General Pershing.

Whomever gave this abomination of an order should be SACKED! I have a feeling it's SHINESKI but it makes no difference if it's Franks, fire him too. Whomever gave this order needs his head handed to him.

I've already wrote my Senators, Rep and Frist. This stinks!

Thanky you Lucianne, Igor Amy and your red white and blue Staff. To know our military are over there and right here is the very essence of United States pride. I will always remember September 11, as I remember December 7 and the guys and gals protecting us are and will never be forgotten.

Thanks for this thread. I have been looking for a way to support our troops by sending a box of goodies to them. I hope some of the sentiments expressed here can find their way to the front lines.
Thanks too for the mailing tips. They are right about sending only items which can be "thrown across the room" ... I worked in an USPO mail handling facility one Christmas & that is exactly what happens to packages when they get sorted. Use lots of styrofoam 'peanuts' and bubble wrap to protect the goodies.
Now what about heat - won't chocolate & Peeps melt???
I am sending Ritz mini-smores (which are YUMMY) and won't melt, beef jerky, paper towels, zip-lock bags and anything else useful or good to eat which I can get together in the next day. Recall that it will take about 3 weeks for packages to get there.
May God Bless our troops and keep them safe. And may God ..."render this just government victorious."

Among the things we can do for the ''Duration,'' our small church in a small denomination has placed on our communion table the names of the eleven sons and one daughter of our congregation who are serving in this perilous operation. The names will stay there until all are safely home.

God Bless America, her warriors, her leaders and her people.

Reply 17 - Posted by: lotsaguns, 3/16/2003 11:33:41 AM

Bless those troops! Everytime I see one of them interviewed on TV my eyes well up with tears. I'm so proud of them and so angry at those silly, naive peaceniks.

I read that they love to receive cookies and also the Gatorade packets.

Reply 18 - Posted by: Condor, 3/16/2003 11:34:35 AM

The originals and more, can be downloaded here.

I'm sure many of the older (no offense) Ldotters remember these. They sure had good art work back then.

Just want to re-post something I posted yesterday:

At work I am involved with a city-wide project called ADOPT A SOLDIER.... through www.militarypride.org They contact troops and ask them if they would like letters/care packages and they submit the names to interested parties. I am one of the INTERESTED PARTIES.

I have 63 pages of NAMES and ADDRESSES of soldiers who WANT LETTERS and CARE PACKAGES. I will also include a LIST OF THINGS they ask for as well as packaging/mailing instructions.

Please contact me at:

ktindavie@compuserve.com

So far I have given out 50 NAMES through the LUCIANNE SITE ALONE.... it's WONDERFUL!!!!

What a wonderful web site, big hugs to Lucianne and all who make it possible. Also this is a great thread. Thanks to all for the pictures etc. I don't know how to do such things but really appreciate those who do.
Am going to go to the ktindavie address and adopt a soldier. I heard some soldiers being interviewed when Brian Kilmead was over there and they said they needed baby wipes to get the sand off their faces etc.

God Bless our troops and keep them safe.

I live in Wheeling WV and we had a pro Bush and support out troops locally yesterday. Was wonderful.

Reply 30 - Posted by: FunnyGirl, 3/16/2003 1:24:54 PM

Getreal, I just heard back from ktindavie and have my adoptee - i think this is a terrific project!

Reply 31 - Posted by: Allegra, 3/16/2003 1:27:47 PM

Kathryn Lopez over at NRO writes of going to a mall where some protesters had 'honk if you oppose the war' signs.

No honking.

Reply 32 - Posted by: SayHey2u, 3/16/2003 2:19:01 PM

A suggestion to those sending care packages. If you find any pro-military articles, print them out and include them in the package. The troops need to hear about about the people who DO support them, since they must get discouraged hearing about the anti-war demonstrations.

Reply 33 - Posted by: Getreal, 3/16/2003 2:26:11 PM

HELP

I can't get the ktindavie address. I have compuserve myself and all I can get is the compuserve home page. I went to google and got the same results. I tried spelling out the whole compuserve word and also just cs.com with the same results.

Reply 34 - Posted by: Allegra, 3/16/2003 2:27:51 PM

#32, an EXCELLENT idea.

Even better, folks, why not print out this thread and SEND IT WITH YOUR PACKAGE!!!

Not being very navy oriented, can anyone tell me about the ship designations on Salts? What kind of ship is USAV..an assault vessel? USNS..submarine? Most others have USS designation and I recognize the aircraft carriers like Kitty Hawk which have been in the news.
It would help just to orient my letters
the type of troops on the ships. Thanks!

Reply 38 - Posted by: Getreal, 3/16/2003 2:58:48 PM

Thanks Funnygirl, I was mistakenly trying to access it as website. Your prompt to write to the address woke my old brain up. I copy and pasted it and my e-mail has been sent.
Thanks again

The posts by Condor and Wookie, sent a tear down my old old peace corps cheeks. You men and women of the Services come home safe and sound.

Reply 40 - Posted by: Col Bill, 3/16/2003 3:04:49 PM

My wife and I started a project to get paperback books to the deploying and deployed troops. So far we have sent thousands as well as hundreds of video movies.
The flights are long and the layovers tedious. The troops need diversion.
We went nation-wide through military wives in a completely decentralized operation. We have been overwhelmed by people in the Bellingham (WA) area and have not advertised in the Seattle area because we just can't handle that amount. (Although Seattle is a bastion of commie die-hard liberals who vote for Patty Murray and Baghdad Jim McDermott in record numbers, there are still a 100,000 people who support our troops and president.)

Reply 41 - Posted by: FunnyGirl, 3/16/2003 3:28:29 PM

Packard Man - I can't really help much except to say that I have sent off general, upbeat notes to all of the ships on SALTS. From one of the responses I can tell you that the USAV's are Army Vessels - who knew? Believe me anyone will be grateful to hear from you - if they are not in the thick of it, they are sitting somewhere waiting or they're leave has been delayed or they are plain scared even if they aren't in the Mediterranean. Tell them how much the country is behind them - make fun of the Hollywood nutjobs, the Dixie Chicks- tell them you love them - they will get the message and you will have made someone's day!

Reply 42 - Posted by: FunnyGirl, 3/16/2003 3:40:34 PM

What a wonderful thing, Colonel Bill. I will add some paperbacks to the box for the guy I adopted courtesy of ktindavie@compuserve.com - Go KT!

Reply 43 - Posted by: moogman, 3/16/2003 5:41:24 PM

Just got back from Costco after shopping for things to put in care packages for our troops. Ktindavie provided me with two names and I will split the packs and send them off (most things one buys at Costco come in bulk "two packs"). Anyway, I hope this encourages the recipients.

If you have not done so already, I would encourage you to write ktindavie and get the name and address of a service member and send them a care package.

Reply 44 - Posted by: , 3/16/2003 5:48:01 PM

Men and women of the Armed Forces of the USA, our hearts, prayers and gratitude go with you. Our freedom and liberty depend on you and on God. God hears and sees everything and is watching you, too, so rest in Him, carry out your duties as you have been so carefully trained to do, and know that unlike past times and past Presidents, THESE citizens and THIS President love and support YOU! Pay no attention to any anti-American, anti-war, anti-Bush reports you may see or hear; it's not the "red part" of the map that you're hearing from if you hear that crap. We're with you!

Reply 45 - Posted by: CincyMom, 3/16/2003 6:01:01 PM

My thanks to all who are defending our country. My prayers are with you.

Reply 46 - Posted by: Teresa, 3/16/2003 6:39:34 PM

Thanks to ktindavie

Just got 3 names from her-our family is adopting a marine, and the other 2 names will be adopted by my son's classes at school.
I am really excited about doing this.
Our church may adopt a couple of service people too.
Come on you ldotters.....if ALL of us adopt someone, think of all the lives that will be touched!

Reply 47 - Posted by: ktindavie, 3/16/2003 6:50:18 PM

I an involved in a project called ADOPT-A-SOLDIER through www.militarypride.com
I have hundreds of names and addresses of soldiers who have requested letters and/or care packages from "HOME"....Please contact me and I will send you your very own soldier to correspond with. THINK how lonely and scared they are. It's the LEAST we can do for our HEROES!!!!

Reply 48 - Posted by: FunnyGirl, 3/16/2003 6:55:48 PM

I too encourage people to contact ktindavie@compuserve.com - along with a name you will receive a detailed list of suggested items - it is very thorough but you'll come up with some other thoughts when you get to the store. For example this afternoon while shopping, I realized that Tootsie Pops are a must ! :-)

I also got a name from ktindavie and put my package together today. I love sending packages to my husband and its great to be able to do it for someone who needs it even more than he does. And its just so much fun to shop for all of the little things! I have to be careful though because my bank account isn't quite as fond of it as I am.

Reply 52 - Posted by: Coral Pink, 3/16/2003 7:37:18 PM

Thanks so much for posting this, Amy. I went to the San Diego harbor to wave a huge American flag as the troops set sail back in January. I would love to tell the same troops who I was and why I was there, how the only reason I am in San Diego is that I am an economic victim of the WTC disaster and therefore, feel especially privileged to have seen them off and especially grateful to them for righting what went wrong with our towers, our economy, our feeling of security, and our right to be Americans. They are going to make it right.

Well, I went to Wally World today and spent more than two weeks grocery budget! Now I don't have a box big enough. So, I have to decide what to send first. I think I cleaned out the sample bin...toothpaste, soap, shampoo, etc. Some paper, pens and envelopes. And a bunch of toys, too.

I will write a note to my son to SHARE, and there's more coming.

I'm so glad we have this forum, and a printout of this thread is going in the box.

Reply 58 - Posted by: realrep, 3/16/2003 8:58:24 PM

We must also support the spouses and the children that are waiting at home.

Reply 59 - Posted by: Allegra, 3/16/2003 9:10:49 PM

How come I have to keep putting my password in?

We got some names from ktindavie - too - and we're going to make sure we include this thread in our packages so the troops can pass it around and see how much they are appreciated.

#58 - yes, we DO need to also keep the spouses and kids in our prayers - good reminder.

Reply 60 - Posted by: Allegra, 3/16/2003 9:22:53 PM

Question: What is Wally World?

You know, I had to run out for milk and heard Glenn Beck describing what it's going to be like in Iraq, and the possibilities for our troops being placed in danger from our own friendly fire.

I pray this goes smoothly, fast and quick.

I know it needs to be done. I support the president. And I know that we need to pound hard and fast to get them to surrender before chemical or bio weapons are unleashed on our troops. I get all that.

All the same. I have prayed and prayed for our president in these days. I will pray even harder that he, that all of us, are RIGHT.

Reply 61 - Posted by: Shimmer128, 3/16/2003 9:32:12 PM

My heart is overflowing after reading these threads. Thank God for the support for our military members.
Don't forget to pray for the families that love them too, the wives and children and others they've left behind. They are counting on us to care for them gently.

I've put all these links in an email and sent it to literally EVERYONE in my address book! I created a group with everyone in it and mailed it out! Lists, individuals, newsletters, even Neal Boortz.
We can't wait to adopt our soldier and maybe find a sailor to adopt too.
A sailor's wife,

A more direct point to contact a serviceman who could use mail is :
http://operationmilitarysupport.com/volunteerstart.htm
I also grabbed adoptawarrior.com and adoptawarrior.org
This might save some email time.
I sent an email to KTINDAVIE@COMPUSERVE.COM and what she sent was a note to go to the above page.
On that page june@operationmilitarysupport.com
wants to hear from you for that 'missing' serviceman.

Look, I served in Ollie's War. I WAS one who in, 8 months didn't see a scrap of mail. I KNOW what it feels like. **PLEASE** take a moment.

BOOKMARK THIS LINK!!

Threads 1 and 2 have already been archived with thread 3 to be added at midnight.
At the bottom of each thread there is a link to the next one..

-Amy-
These 'special threads' get cleaned overnight automatically in case we need to reuse them...

Also- Every 'Special event' thread is archived and may be found within the Archives of our front pages dating back to Sept 10, 2001. The missing pages are almost all available again, too.

And I have already gotten my two military people wahooooooooooooo

I'm so excited...I just got a female soldier (yotty's good idea) so now we have two guys and a gal. I'm all giddy thinking of the 'girl' things I can buy for her. And I think I'll put a little teddy bear in it too.

Reply 70 - Posted by: saguni, 3/16/2003 10:41:33 PM

I've printed the Operation Military Support page to take to work tomorrow. We can't surf at work, and many of my co-workers do not have computers at home, but I will offer to be a go-between, if they will be the penpal, I will bring back a list of service people.

Reply 71 - Posted by: Gretchen, 3/16/2003 11:18:20 PM

I "met" my husband when he was on a tour in Egypt with the Army. His mother hated writing and she knew her son needed some letters, so she asked me to write him. Well, thirteen years and two children later...

He was sooooo grateful to get letters and care packages. I hope everyone adopts a service member.

What a great idea! But, alas! I'm late to the party! I am praying each morning and night for all our troops and their families and loved ones!

I'm going to do everything I can also, for some individuals! This is a responsibility, but much more than that: It is a priviledge and joy to do for them! They are in harm's way and though I realize this has to be, I want GOD holding them each in the Palm of His Hand. They are there for us - to preserve our Freedom - they are the most unselfish and best America has to offer and that is saying alot. Among them are many (I hope all) of our Presidents and leaders for the next 50 or so years! This comforts me to think of this.

GOD go with you, guys and gals! Stay safe and come home soon!

GOD Bless - PenDragon
