If anyone knows an APO or FPO where a letter can be sent to any service member can receive mail, please post. I don't think the Dear Abby any service member works any longer.
And to you fine men and women in our armed services - God Bless you all. We are sooooooo proud of you. Thank you for all you do.

As the wife of one of the men out there, I have to say that the support and respect shown to servicemembers by Ldotters is tremendously appreciated. I want to be stoic, and patriotic, but there is a teeny tiny part of me that wants to cry and say "I don't care about Iraq. I want my husband home where I know he's safe." But then I come here and read all of the wonderful posts and it restores my faith and keeps me strong. I want to thank all of you for just being who you are. Patriotic, generous, caring people. You are what they are fighting for.

What's wonderful about this country, and especially about our great men and the women in the military is that they are not only fighting for the patriotic, generous and caring 71% who support them, but also to preserve the right to dissent of those who do not support this war. Is this a great country, or WHAT!

As a memeber of the "Presidential Prayer Team" I "adopted" a service member to pray for. All I can say is that his first name is Travis, he is in the Navy (as was my departed father) and he has 4 (yes count them four) children, (as do I). I pray for him and his family daily. I continue to pray for all of the brave men and women who are willing to sacrifice their lives for us to be free. May you know the gratefulness and love of your fellow countrymen and women. We love and pray for you and your families. God speed. God speed. God speed.

From the members at our house to those of you on active duty, we thank you so much. Our family has been military and believes in what you do. As a matter of fact, when you see the idiots who mock you and this country, they do not represent the bulk of America. As my family thinks of you, far from home wondering what you are up against and yet trying to stay upbeat and prepared, we are humbled. Thank you is not much to say but we want you to know that we appreciate and realize that the sacrifice you have made is what makes this country free and the best place on earth. Please stay safe. Watch out for one another and if you've never prayed, now is a perfect time to learn -just straight from your heart to God's. We are praying for you here, too. Thank you for all you are doing.
God Bless and come home quickly.
With much gratitude,

#2, thanks for sharing your situation and thoughts. Your husband is part of something incredibly important and you must be so proud of him. The latest polls show that the vast majority of the country supports the President, because with each day that passes, it becomes more obvious that Saddam Hussein has been thumbing his nose at the world community, and must be removed.

Thanks so much Amy for this Rally Round the Troops table. I would like to know how I can send homemade goodies to some of them. I can't promise a batallions worth, but I can enlist friends to help produce cookies from home. All we need is an APO for a single soldier or a unit which would be better. I have done this before and believe me these things are appreciated. Doesn't have to be limited to cookies, anything good to eat from home is welcomed. So if anybody knows a site or where to get the info, please post it. Our kids in the desert deserve anything we can do to make it more confortable and easier to bear. Sometimes just some good sox and great toiletries will boost a soldiers heart.
Deepest thanks to every one of you. We are also a retired military family and know the aacrifices involved.

My nephew is with the Truman battle group as I write this. My mother bought a whole lot of Girl Scout cookies and is sending them to him. For my part, I am e-mailing him articles reporting ''Support the troop'' and Pro-Bush/Pro-USA rallies and activities. This is more important than simple food. Our troops MUST know that they are supported here at home.
As an aside, I thank Miss Lucianne and Miss Amy for putting together this WRT. Please, for the sake of any future WRT's and the sanity of the beauticious Miss Lucy, can we put aside differences and just try to get along?????!!!!!! Thanks!!

Thanks so much for the roundtable, Amy!

The military is such a part of our family I can't imagine not being proud of all of them.
It is a privilege and an honor to send goodies to the troops. The Hollywood crowd aren't good enough to participate. They are probably jealous that someone else is getting some attention.

Ma2x, #32, is there a piece missing from LCpl Voss's mailing address? You have company and battalion, but no regiment listed. (E.g. my son who's in Okinawa is at Golf Co., 2nd BN, 7 MAR).
I second the poster who recommended Girl Scout Cookies (or Harry & David cookies, or any kind of prepackaged treats). My son loves them and says they're real popular with all the guys.
And please spare a prayer for the servicemen who aren't in the Gulf but are on duty elsewhere. The Marines in Okinawa, for example, were supposed to rotate back Stateside on Feb 1 but that's been cancelled; they're staying put for now. Not going to the Gulf (at least not yet), not going anywhere; just...waiting for their next assignment, whatever it is. They've still got their daily routines but I gather that boredom is a problem, and that can't be good for morale. So please be mindful of them too.

I am a navy spouse. I don't have any other sites to recommend for sending stuff, but I do have a site to recommend for getting the feel of how our service members are doing in Kuwait. The Sandbox ( recommended by TruckerJim)
Another site with an interesting letter from a Major in the Marines stationed in Kuwait is:
< A href=http://www.ornery.org/forums/essays/forum/Forum15/HTML/000100.html> Letter I sometimes wish the press would just shut up, shut up and stop trying to scare people, stop trying to dramatize every aspect of this situation. I am also suspicious of having the press with our troops, I don't trust them (the press) and I don't think our military should either.

I'm wondering . . . would homemade cookies that DON'T use fresh dairy products (shortening instead of butter, juice instead of milk, etc.) work, if packed in disposable plastic containers, be okay to send?
Has anyone actually SENT homemade cookies or baked goods to a loved one? I'm not so much worried about the cookies crumbling, but spoiling . . .

Our family prays every night and at mealtime
for protection of every man and woman serving
in the military and for the protection and encouragement for their families.
God bless you all.

To every defender of freedom and America in the farthest and unknown corners of the earth:
God sees you. He is not blind. Act with honor and complete your work and then HURRY HOME. You will be known to my great grandchildren like the men on Lexington Green.
"Thank you!" from one of very few Americans who dropped his student deferment, was drafted, and passed his physical but never served. You go in my name. You are the protector of my home.

From the mail:
I read this site constantly but have never tried to post anything.
This morning I saw the article on supporting the troops. My sister-in-law's son is in Kuwait. She sent me this site that was started during Desert Storm. It has a very good list of suggestions of things that could be included in a *care package*. I thought your readers might like to know.
http://operationmilitarypride.org/packages.html
MORE:
I have not registered to use your website and never posted however I would
like to say thanks to all you folks.
I saw a note today about sending emails to the navy and marines and used it
this morning. I thought I would offer a suggestion that if you find
interesting you could post it.
The list of ships on the *SALTS*(www.salts.navy.mil) email list is quite
long. What we have done is as a family *adopted* a ship and will email them
regularly and we have offered to forward messages and thoughts or whatever
to families of GI's who may not have email capablities. Possibly you could
suggest that to your readers to adopt a ship also - pick one there is a
bunch. Much more than I realized.

RALLY FOR AMERICA

Our local talk radio station is having a rally at Valley Forge tomorrow.. A quarter of the nation's population lives within a 5 hour drive of Valley Forge. This ought to be huge!!!

Hi #67 - the website
http://www.salts.navy.mil/main/troops/
shows commissioned ships but doesn't tell which are deployed to the middle east - however, I do know the USS Theo Roosevelt is in the area because it was on the news. As others have mentioned there are a lot of men & women not in the middle east who are much in need of a morale boost. I have gotten responses and all are grateful to hear that the protesters in the news are in the MINORITY. Anyone out there will be very grateful to hear from you!

To Poster #68 who asked about mailing homemade goodies overseas:
I've sent cookies, and my son said they arrived in good condition. Treat them as though they were made of glass - wrap them in plastic wrap, then put them in a Ziploc bag, and make sure there's extra padding (shredded paper, or whatever) in the box when you seal it up. By the way UPS will ship to APO/FPO addresses so you might want to go that route - I don't know that the stuff gets there any faster (my son is always vague about arrival dates) but it will get there intact.

More from our mailbox:
Dear Amy,
I emailed you once before about how much I and others appreciate your site over here. I was reading through the posts and thought I would provide one other mailing address for your folks to send letters to, and prepackaged goods. Homemade stuff may not be a good idea with all the force protection issues, I dont think they will allow it from non family. The fear of something being put in the food to harm us is a concern. Our unit address
is:
363 EACCS/JSTARS
Unit 70495/Box 95
APO AE 09882

Thank you for posting sites and information to maintain contact with our heroes who are deployed. I have copied them into a word docment to dispense to my entire e-mail list. I know several reservists - the strain on their families is very great.
To those posters who have family overseas, please accept my deepest gratitude for your sacrifice and know that you and your loved ones are being prayed for in a big way.
Thanks to fellow posters for the wonderful words.
God bless our President Bush, all his advisors, and especially those who love freedom everywhere!

Wow, it's great to see so many folks 'fired up' in support of the troops, who so selflessly have committed themselves to the cause.
Our blessings and prayers to you and yours, Ldotters who have family serving.
Alex, thanks for the terrific list of useful items to send. After all, how many cookies can they possibly eat? Everyday items like chapstick that we take for granted must be quite welcome. And books is a great idea.
This morning, on CNN they showed a soldier in his tent waiting out a sandstorm. The sand was so fine and blowing so hard, that it was piling up in the tent on his sleeping bag, and I'm sure it gets into everything.
But, there he was with a great big smile on his face, not complaining.
God bless them and keep them.

To JemMAC, homemade cookies made with regular ingredients seem to arrive in fine condition, if carefully wrapped. We've been sending mostly chocolate chip cookies made with butter and the usual things. It seems to take about 2 weeks..and so far no problems, though I'll be changing what I send from now on because the weather's getting too hot for chocolate chips. As the previous poster recommended, wrap them like they're glass. I wrap them in bunches of 6 or 8 in wax paper, and put as many packets as I can in a very large tin (Charles Chips type) that has been lined & cushioned with crumpled wax paper. This is then put inside a shipping box. If you send chocolate bars (again, it's getting a little too warm in the middle east for this) wrap them in foil, then plastic wrap, then put them in a ziploc bag. You can use paperback books and magazines for more cushioning material in the box. God bless you, and God bless our troops.

Edited for privacy, here is a response my sister received via *SALTS* - how much do you love this guy!
"I am on an army boat. Yes, the army has
watercraft and quite a few of them too. I thank you and the people like
you who support the armed forces in such a way that I do feel proud.
Proud of myself and proud of my country. It's people like you that get
me through the day each day and keep me awake at night. I still worry
about war and dying but if my life saves one American back home; I did
my job to the fullest. Thanx for your support and encouragement. All my
prayers and best wishes to you. Luv from a PFC to..."

Fellow L Dotters
This is truly a beautiful way to support our troops. However, I would humbly suggest that people limit the amount of personal information that they post on family and friends that serve in the military. Remember the enemy is always watching.
Very respectfully,

I hope everybody reads #79.
I guess we're naive and still innocent.
Of course they won't let them eat 'homemade' treats that come unsolicited.
In this world with so many ingeniously evil people in it, they wouldn't want the troops exposed to possible harm.
It's like not letting your kids eat Hallowe'en candy that's not sealed.
What a shame, but a fact of life these days.
Oh well, there are lots of other things to send, and especially, prayers.

oh MY - never even considered that there would be a fear of harmful materials in homemade materials, but that makes perfect sense . . . while our troops may have to do without my homemade chocolate drop cookies, I know they'll love the cookies I'll buy!
I'll still ship it - unopened - in a ziplock bag, so that, once opened, they'll stay fresh longer - that is, if any are left
after that package is ripped open!
You know, I'm so excited to be "adopting" servicemen/women - if I can, in some teeny, tiny way contribute to the aid and comfort of those in a foreign land defending liberty - liberty for the entire world - it's my duty to do so. What a blessing to be living in the United States . . .

Thanks, Lucianne, for this thread. I have several boxes ready to go to the post office this afternoon, and Alex, I had'nt thought of the prepaid phone cards - will add some of those also.
May God bless our troops in the days and weeks ahead and bring them home safe.

All of you are quite right who are posting cautions. I forgot that it's a rotten world... The packages we send are to family & family friends, who know the source.
To others, I agree sadly that homemade is no good...better stick to sealed store-bought packages, so no one has to worry. sigh

I've adopted two servicemen to pray for through Presidential Prayer Team.
Eric, Marines. He has a child he's requested prayer for as well.
Jesse, National Guard. Wife and two children.
It is an honor, a privilege, a deeply meaningful heartstrong connection to remember these servicemen and their families throughout my day.
Ronald Reagan March 15, 1984 - "Without God there is no virtue because there is no prompting of the conscience,...without God democracy will not and cannot long endure."
I raise my heart in Joy and Love to the Father and God of all, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the Living God, and I raise my voice in a long and loud shout, rifle in my right hand reaching to the sky on a sunrise hilltop...
"America!"
God Bless our troops. God Bless our sailors and marines. God bless our airmen. God Bless all our military. But especially, God Bless those who but stand and wait in the long hours alone, for their's is the lonliest, the hardest, the most wearing struggle of all.

Please please please pray that my men prevail and come home safe. I'm their LT and am heartbroken not to be with them.

Alex sent a good list. Being experienced in this regard don't foreget batteries - AAA,AA, C, and D. We need em for our luxury items (walkmen, CD players) and our flashlites.
Camelbacks are expensive and do get made avialable for troops to purchase over there. I know a PFC usually doesn't walk around with the extra $45 for one. We could use 'em in desert cammo and black. It is a water carrier you wear on your back and drink through a tube. Greatest thing ever invented to keep our boys hydrated in the field. If you want to send some to our troops, I know we appreciate it.

I hate to bring this up but CNN is giving full bore coverage to the Anti-War rallies today, especially the one in Washington DC. They stated that there are Pro America rallies around but are too small and don't seem to make a difference.
What an insult to our troops. We should be calling, faxing, emailing CNN and tell them to give fair coverage and to show more support for our troops stop supporting Saddam.
There are Rallies in many cities, two I know of off hand are Atlanta and tomorrow in Philadelphia.
I'm mad as hell!
As for our Military in the Middle East, our family is well aware of their sacrifice, having had members in most every war, including myself, and lost a few along the way.
The majority of Americans DO support you and pray of your safe return with a job well done!

Please pray for my nephew, a reserve staff sgt who is on his way there. A friend of his has posted his letters home (under a pseudonym) and the site is getting 500 hits a day. You cannot imagine how much this means to him and his family. Wall Street Journal wanted to interview him (no can do, orders) because he writes very colorfully. My favorite: FIDO (F it, drive on). I'd post the site address, but I don't want to get him in trouble. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
