Quote of The Day
Helen Thomas: Ari, what makes the President -- I'm taking note of his
wide-swinging threats in speeches recently. What makes him think that he has
the right to go into a sovereign country and bomb the people?
MR. FLEISCHER: His threats?
Helen Thomas: Any country. Yes, he's --
MR. FLEISCHER: Would you like to be more specific?
Helen Thomas: Does he think he can go beyond Afghanistan or anywhere else?
MR. FLEISCHER: The President has made it clear to the American people that
the United States, in the wake of an attack on our country, will defend
itself. And as a result of defending ourselves, you can see what is
happening in Afghanistan. The President has said that this is a war against
terrorism because terrorists continue to pose a threat to the United States
and to others around the world, and that he is involved in phase one of
defending this country against terrorists, and he will continue to do so.
Helen Thomas: What gives him the authority to go into other countries and
bomb them, which is what he is threatening to do?
MR. FLEISCHER: The right as the Commander-in-Chief to protect and defend
the American people.
Gunga Dan's Not-So-Hot Adventure: After three whole days at whatever
passes
for a Motel 6 in Kabul,
Dan Rather is throwing in his pakoul
and heading home. Perhaps he can show his bravery once again with an at home
interview
with Bernie Goldberg?
Zell, You Da Man: For a democrat, Zell Miller is okay - he gets it. Here's
what he has to say regarding John Ascroft's appearance on the hill today.
"These nit-pickers need to find another nit to pick. They need to stop
protecting the rights of terrorists. Why in the world would we try our own
soldiers with this system of justice, but not some foreigner who is trying
to
kill us? It's crazy."
Greg Pierce reports in the Washington Times .
Clinton on the Rebound: Clinton was shoveling more than Arkansas soil
at a
ground breaking ceremony yesterday for the Clinton Library (a future
historical site guaranteed to do less business than the Pocatello Potato
Museum). Here's what he had to say about that pesky legacy he's been looking
for: "...... and
I believe the fact that we stood up to this right-wing
movement will be something that will rebound (sic) to my credit in
history. I
don't think it will be a black mark." He's right there. The stain on the Gap
dress was some other color.
The Guilt Trip Gambit: John Ashcroft could do worse than printing out
John
Podhoretz' column in today's NYPost and reading it verbatim at the
hearings
this afternoon. Someone might also want to read it to Katie Couric whose
interview with Senators Leahy and Shelby
on the subject sorely tasked her own bias against military tribunals.
PCBusters: Remember when "gay" meant a hat with ribbons? Raspberries
in the
snow? A chic party or frock?
Laughter? How did we let that perfectly delightful word get swiped? What
was
wrong with "camp"? We note that
homosexuals themselves are bringing back "queer" and that's fine. Let them
have it, but we want "gay" back. We have "issues" about language theft -
oops, sorry, "issues" is tomorrow's word.
Your LComStaff (Reminding you once again. They are trying to kill us)
