The LDot Weekend Roundtable

Just below the surface of the news is the belief of experts that the US will move on Iraq and its current brutal regime this fall. How do you feel about it? Is this something we should be doing and do you think the country is ready for an all out effort of this kind?

Saturday snapshot: Just because we thought you'd like a few extra minutes added to your weekend we've put together this quick report. For late-breaking news be sure and check 'Must Reads' updated throughout the day and we'll be back with another quick look at the headlines tomorrow morning.

Overnight updates: After an 18 hour delay, drilling resumed early Saturday morning in Somerset, PA. in the attempt to reach nine coal miners trapped deep underground in a cramped, flooded mine shaft. In Washington, the House voted in the wee hours to create the Department of Homeland Security.

Anyone else around? The ex-president and his wife are well-known for lateness and for the late Friday afternoon kind of announcements that deserve full media scrutiny. Yesterday's announcement by David Kendall was pure targeted timing. Only the AP and two major dailies had coverage in their Saturday editions. We found this headline from the NYTimes: 'Clintons Ask Millions from U.S. in Whitewater Legal Fees" and from the NYDaily News: 'Bill seeks 3.5M for legal fees'.

DC Connection: Two more headlines, one out of Washington and the other from South Dakota have us wondering: coincidence or conspiracy? You be the judge. The AP reported early Friday afternoon [of a] 'Dead Bird on White House Lawn To Be Tested for West Nile Virus'. We then read that health officials on Friday reported South Dakota's first case of the West Nile virus from Kevin Dobbs in the Argus-Leader.

Florida Fiasco: As if the crash of a FedEx cargo-plane wasn't enough of a get-in-and-out-of-town-headache on Friday, this one also created havoc for political candidates trying to meet the noon deadline for qualifying for this fall's state elections. Two-and-a-half hours after the deadline passed, Gov. Jeb Bush signed an emergency order extending the deadline until 5 p.m. today for candidates who can prove that the airport's closure was to blame for their tardiness.

Insider trading? An innovative young lady has found that the old barter system has its advantages in this 'stock' market. She traded her pigs for her future.

Here Comes The Sun: To introduce you to the online edition of the New York Sun we recommend Andrew Sullivan's piece from Friday: 'The Dog That Didn't Bark - Just Where Is Bob Rubin These Days?'.
