Short Cuts

Summertime and The Livin' is Sleazy: There is nothing the media likes more running up to a long slow-news holiday weekend than a juicy scandal and once again, the Kennedy's have come to the rescue. Yesterday, they had the excerpts from a new book on the rather shop worn "Kennedy Curse" and warmed over tales of the inner workings of the JFK, Jr. marriage. This permitted TV to take the puffed up position of "How dare we talk about this" while incessantly talking about it. Today they have more on the divorce of politician-manque Andrew Cuomo who gets the jump (so to speak) on departing wife, Kennedy-kid Kerry, by accusing her of infidelity. The nerve.....

Guilty Pleasures: Right up there with secretly rooting for Howard Dean to be the dem candidate is our evil wish that Jerry Springer will run for the Senate. One couldn't ask for better, easier copy. It wouldn't damage the democracy and he would get up to some hilarious things. However, there is always the danger that Springer, not an altogether stupid man, might just pull it off. Actually, that would be fun too.

Drumbeat of the Apocalypse: There is a reason why Andrew Sullivan's blog is one of the few permitted for posting here and that's because, in most things, he is so unarguably right. His take on all the moaning, groaning and pitching that the media is going through to squeeze Iraq into their tired old Vietnam wheeze is, as his countrymen say, spot on.

Whatever Happened to Jayson Blair: Not much, seems to be the answer. The New York Sun reports that two other books on the upheaval over the paper of record will beat him to the stands. After all the hoopla over his "million dollar proposal" not one publisher wants the headache of dealing with him or it. And, while we are on book news - anyone notice the eerie silence over Hillary's book this week? Our interns report that here in New York it's in the bra-strap high stacks and un-bought along the book store walls.
