Quote of the day:

"We've made people so frightened of doing their jobs because they have to be politically correct that they avoid the obvious, Al Qaeda is not an equal-opportunity employer."

-Rep. Mark Foley, (R-Fla)

Learning From Example: Someone else doesn't have to walk

Did U-Turn? There's a lot on the board regarding what some took as Bush's U-turn on global warming. The best commentary (as usual) is Andrew Sullivan's. Everybody take a deep breath and do a little homework on a basically boring subject. It's only fair. Andrew further comments on the Ken Auletta piece in the current New Yorker on new NYTimes honcho, Howell "Mullah Omar" Raines. Read that, too, rather than the original. That will save time to sort of the whole global warming thing.

Reading Is Fundamental: Seems Shoe Bomber Richard Reed is pitching a fit in prison because his Time magazine is being snipped up by censors. How come he gets Time anyway? Why can't be make do with Jugs like everyone else in there?

Lost In The Translation: The New York Post (and USA Today) report that the CIA goofed on 9/11 warnings because could not figure out what remarks such as "Something big is happening" and "Tomorrow will be a great day for us" meant until it was too late. Clearly they were waiting for someone to mutter down his cellphone, "We are bombing the World Trade Center around 9. Meet us at Logan airport."

Trial Traction: The "Kennedy Cousin" trial of Michael Skakel finally sparked to life yesterday. Bobby, Jr. showed up for the first time and the prosecution blind-sided Skakel's Oh-So-Cool defense attorney, Mickey Sherman with a summation that had the Skakel side reeling as the case went to the jury. Nonetheless, Igor's Ldot office poll has Skakel walking - make that limping - away. Somehow this one didn't have the charm of the William Kennedy Smith rape trial.

While Oprah Wept: Remember the recent Academy Awards that the Hollywood establishment turned into a modern version of the Dark Town Strutters Ball? Richard Roeper, in the Chicago Sun Times takes a deeper look at what's really happening to black stars. Interesting piece for all hypocrisy spotters.

Auletta Cliff Notes: Editor and Publisher Online gives you the highlights of the much chattered about Ken Auletta deconstruction of the "new" NYTimes. If you want to know why you should care - just examine what their handling of the global warming story has done to the last news cycle. Sadly, what the NYTimes does matters deeply.
