Defense secretary promises military
DREAMers will be ´protected´ from
deportation even if DACA ends

Defense Secretary James Mattis said Thursday that servicemen and women who are protected from deportation by an Obama-era program set to expire on March 5 will be ´protected´ regardless of their immigration status. The Pentagon chief told reporters that he had spoken with Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen about the roughly 800 members of the U.S. military whose status was thought to be in limbo. People who are on active duty or serve in the reserves won´t be targets for deportation, he said, adding that veterans with honorable discharges would also be guaranteed safe harbor in the U.S., along with new recruits

I know this sounds like a stupid question, but don´t you have to be a citizen to be in the US Military???

Yes, the 800 can stay as long as they don´t commit any felonies. The other 99.9% have to leave.

We´re told these DACA folks are such great patriots. You´d think many more would sign up for the military to serve the country they love.
Just sayin´

No problem with them being "protected" while they serve honorably in the military.

Trump has really put the Dems in a box, now that he´s calling for 1.8 million to be in the deal, and they aren´t taking it, yet.

It´s showing clearly the Dems aren´t about just getting legal status for them, but now want to ensure there is a continuous loophole they can exploit in future years.

Remember, there was a whole other group of unaccompanied minors, mostly from Central America, the Obama admin assisted to get here, so anything with DACA will set a precedent.

Establish a legal status, then allow them to apply for citizenship just like anyone else. This process takes about 10-12 years, so is NOT amnesty.

Hate to disagree with SecDef but he is wrong.
VERY wrong.
Ever hear of the Foreign Legion? Probably. French Legion Etranger. Not allowed on French soil, unless that´s changed: they weren´t totally stupid. Spanish at least used to have an equivalent, I believe.
Why should we arm and train a bunch in our midst who have no loyalty nor ties to the nation? Dumb idea. Anyone other than me ever bother to READ Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire"?? My volumes are a few feet from me. They recount, as do others, what some of the results were of accepting enemy foreign nationals into the army. Those armed and equipped foreign nationals, owing no sense of allegiance to Rome, but did to their clan and tribe, had more than a bit to do with the eventual collapse. WE should be smart enough to learn form their mistakes.

No, David. Secretary Mattis did not “promise”. Apparently 800 are in the categories named:

People who are on active duty or serve in the reserves won´t be targets for deportation, he said, adding that veterans with honorable discharges would also be guaranteed safe harbor in the U.S., along with new recruits who are ´signed up and they´re waiting to go into boot camp.´

Only a judge could override that order, Mattis explained, if a ´DREAMer´ committed a serious felony or was subject to a final deportation order.

David and the DM go nuts in their headlines. And this applies to only a TOTAL of approximately 800 out of how many hundred thousand?

We always treat our mercenaries well. This harkens back to the days when the judge would offer jail or the Marines.

Anybody who serves our country in our military, especially in the US Marines deserves citizenship. The Marines don´t provide interpreters and they don´t cut you any slack because you belong to some sort of protected minority. The expect everyone, right down to the cooks to be ready to fight and kill the enemy and to follow orders. They teach you to love this country enough to risk your life for our country. That´s the kind of "dreamer" who paid the price for American citizenship.

There are already federal laws that grant aliens who serve in the US military almost immediate citizenship, all they have to do is apply.

#8, in the history of this country, we have had hundreds of thousands of non-citizens who have served this country well and faithfully.

This includes American Indians before they became citizens as group in 1924, the Irish and Germans serving in the pre-Civil War Army, Union Army and Indians War Army, the Philippine Scouts, and people from everywhere in WW2.

This policy was in effect during the Vietnam War, even for people coming from behind the Iron Curtain. I remember processing paperwork on a Bulgarian serving in the 82nd Airborne. (Looked like he rode in with Attila the Hun.)

I think the U.S. military can handle 800 people ALREADY SERVING. I vouch for the one I work with.

Donald Trump said Monday on Twitter that Omarosa Manigault Newman, the reality-TV villain who he hired to conduct African-American outreach in his White House, signed a confidentiality agreement while she worked in the West Wing. The president´s tweet confirmed what his counselor Kellyanne Conway suggested a day earlier. But it´s unclear whether non-disclosure agreements signed by government employees are worth the paper they´re printed on. ´Wacky Omarosa already has a fully signed Non-Disclosure Agreement!´ Trump told his 53.7 million Twitter followers. That hasn´t stopped her, and she told MSNBC on Monday that she ´absolutely´ has more audio recordings than the few she has

HOPKINS, SC - Pollution tied to infant deaths and cancer in adults has shown up for decades in the groundwater beneath a nuclear fuel factory less than two miles from Michael Daugherty’s house. But the 41-year-old Daugherty, a lifelong Hopkins resident, never knew much about the Westinghouse plant, except that two of his cousins work there. Now, in the aftermath of a recent uranium leak at the plant, Daugherty wants to know whether the factory he has driven by for decades is a threat to his community. He’s among multiple Lower Richland residents uneasy about the safety of the Westinghouse facility, an

Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani insisted on Sunday that a central claim of fired FBI Director James Comey – one that could land the president in legal hot water – is completely false. Comey wrote in a private memo following a February 2017 meeting with Trump that the newly minted president had asked him to tone down the investigative pressure on former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. Not so, Giuliani claimed. Flynn was bounced from the White House after just 24 days on the job, an event Trump has said was a consequence of Flynn´s lies to the FBI about his pre-inauguration contacts

Democrats are a good bet to retake the U.S. House of Representatives when midterm elections are decided in November, but it won´t mean they have fixed the problems and perceptions that cost them big with voters in the 2014 and 2016 cycles. They may even be getting worse. Democrats were once known as the party of rural families, union members and the white working class. It is now associated with the coastal elites, nouveau socialists, the "resistance" and all manner of identity politics. The point is that Democrats have turned their backs on the voters who once lifted them to consistent congressional

A British sniper gunned down a jihadi from almost 1.5miles away in what is reportedly the best long-range shot ever in the SAS. The sergeant killed the Islamic State commander with a .50 Calibre machine gun, shooting him in the chest. The Islamist´s arm and shoulder were torn off due to the force of the bullet and he died instantly. The jihadi was on a British and US kill list. A veteran of Iraq and Syria, the sergeant was secretly patrolling a region of northern Afghanistan under Islamic State control, The Daily Star Sunday reports. His gun is being decommissioned and displayed in

Ohio Gov. John Kasich on Sunday said the GOP needs to find a unifying message to tamp down the “chaotic environment” that seems to dominate political discourse today, citing a narrow victory for Republican Troy Balderson in a special congressional election that should have been a slam dunk for his party. Mr. Balderson appears to have squeaked out a win in Ohio’s 12th Congressional District, where Republicans previously won with “overwhelming numbers,” as the governor put it. That’s raising fears among Republicans about their prospects in swing districts this November. “What you had is a, I think, a message from

"The dirty war on the free press must end." That´s the idea behind an unusual editorial-writing initiative that has enlisted scores of newspapers across America. The Boston Globe has been contacting newspaper editorial boards and proposing a "coordinated response" to President Trump´s escalating "enemy of the people" rhetoric. "We propose to publish an editorial on August 16 on the dangers of the administration´s assault on the press and ask others to commit to publishing their own editorials on the same date," The Globe said in its pitch to fellow papers. The effort began just a few days ago.

Tennessee has carried out its first execution in nearly a decade using a controversial cocktail of drugs including a lethal ingredient described by the Supreme Court as "chemically burning at the stake". Billy Ray Irick, an inmate convicted of the 1985 rape and murder of seven-year-old Paula Dyer, received a three-drug injection on Thursday night after the US Supreme Court denied a final request to stay his execution. The lethal injection consisted of midazolam, used as sedative during an execution, a muscle-relaxer called vecuronium bromide, and compounded potassium chloride, the agent that stops the heart.

A Gallup poll released Monday finds that – for the first time in the poll company’s data collection over the past decade – Democrats view socialism more positively than capitalism. The current survey demonstrates only 47 percent of Democrats view capitalism positively, a drop from 56 percent in 2016. Democrats’ view of socialism, however, has remained positive since 2010, with 57 percent having a positive perspective. Meanwhile, Republicans have remained positive about capitalism, with 71 percent taking that perspective and only 16 percent stating they have a positive view of socialism. The poll finds younger Americans have shown the greatest
