Toys R Us store-closing sales
start as soon as Wednesday

USA Today, by Joan Verdon

Toy retailer Toys R Us won U.S. Bankruptcy Court approval Tuesday to begin going-out of-business sales at about 170 of its stores across the country. Liquidation sales could begin as early as Wednesday, according to a plan that U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Keith Phillips approved at a hearing in Richmond, Va. The sales would be completed by April 15, according to the plan. (Snip) Reports of dismal sales during the crucial holiday 2017 period have industry observers and analysts predicting that the number of closed stores could double or triple as Toys R Us tries to come up with a reorganization

Comments:
I don´t see them surviving much longer. Sales are down sharply and they have billions of dollars in debt hanging over their heads.

They may have had lots of products to sell, but once again, overpriced.

California´s ´jungle primary´ isn´t
working. We need election reform 2.0
Los Angeles Times, by Andrew Gumbel    Original Article

As California hurtles toward its state primary June 5, it is obvious there´s a problem. Its open primary system — which sends the top two vote-getters to the general election, regardless of party affiliation — is not working as intended and risks throwing the midterm election into acrimony and confusion. This system is called a "jungle primary" for a reason: It is brutal and unpredictable. In three high-profile House races, there are so many candidates from the two major parties eating into one another´s support that the election results may end up owing more to chance than any discernible will

Starbucks apologizes for

Starbucks´ day of racial-bias training for its baristas can´t come soon enough. With less than two weeks to go before the coffee chain closes stores nationwide to educate its nearly 175,000 workers on how not to discriminate against others, Starbucks (SBUX) this week found itself apologizing for doing just that. (Tweet) The apology on social media came after a customer at a Starbucks in La Cañada Flintridge, California, found the word "Beaner" -- a derogatory term for Mexicans -- printed on his coffee drink instead of "Pedro," his name. A friend of Pedro's who translated for him told CBS Los Angeles that his "friend was also sad"

Trump defends ´animals´

WASHINGTON -- President Donald Trump on Thursday defended his use of the word "animals" to describe some immigrants who enter the country illegally, saying he would continue to use the term to refer to violent gang members in spite of a sharp rebuke from Democratic leaders. Answering a reporter´s question during a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, Trump said his comment a day earlier had clearly been directed at members of the MS-13 gang. (Snip) Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., responded on Twitter to the president, saying, "When all of our great-great-grandparents

Cheesecake Factory Inc. said two workers at one of its Miami restaurants are no longer employed there after making “disparaging remarks” about a customer’s hat bearing the slogan of President Donald Trump’s campaign “Make America Great Again.” “No guest should ever feel unwelcome in one of our restaurants and we are very sorry,” the chain said in a statement on Twitter. An investigation is continuing into the incident, which occurred on Sunday. It said that as of Tuesday, the two staff members are no longer with the company. The response comes as a push for more inclusion becomes a key

The far left is winning
the Democratic civil war

The Big Idea: Tuesday was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day for Democratic moderates. The success of very liberal candidates in primaries across four states is causing a new bout of heartburn among party strategists in Washington, who worry about unelectable activists thwarting their drive for the House majority. But it also reflects a broader leftward lurch among Democrats across the country since President Trump took office. -- In Nebraska, a liberal social worker and political neophyte who built her campaign around “Medicare for All” scored a shocking upset in a Democratic primary to take on Rep. Help, the Queen Is Reportedly "Very

In case you somehow missed the legitimately insane drama, it was recently revealed that A) Meghan Markle´s brother wrote an open letter asking Prince Harry to call off the royal wedding, B) Meghan Markle´s dad staged paparazzi photos, and c) Meghan´s Markle´s dad was so upset by A and B that he canceled his plans to come to the wedding and is now reportedly in hospital for heart surgery. So how does The Queen feel about this turn of events? HRH is reportedly "very angry" with Thomas Markle Sr. for selling staged photos of himself, and honestly having The Queen

It was, as the local public radio station said, the day “Seattle Nice” died. On May 2, the residents of Seattle were hit with a one-two punch. For months, the city council had been debating a new tax on large employers to raise $75 million for new affordable housing and services for the homeless, whose growing population had burst out of shelters and into tents around the city. (Snip) Homeowners shouted down the council members and each other—decrying how growth and homeless encampments were encroaching into neighborhoods. Some opposed the tax, shivering at the thought of risking jobs at the

The polling news has been nothing but good lately for the GOP, yet Democrats were still narrowly favored to retake the House. Until now. Donald Trump has stayed uncharacteristically quiet on Twitter without posting a single tweet about the royal wedding. The President, who is usually especially active on the social media network early in the day, did not tweet anything all morning about the nuptials between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, which ended at 9.00am ET. Rumors swirled about whether Trump would be invited to the wedding at Windsor Castle in Berkshire, but he was eventually left off the guest list, along with other political leaders. Prominent figures who made the cut included Oprah Winfrey, George and Amal Clooney and the Beckhams. Other A-listers including Idris

The man who is sixth in line to be king of Great Britain is getting married today and America has lost its mind. What does it mean to be sixth in the line of royal succession to an office that depends solely and exclusively on who your father is? It means that five family members have to die before you get the real goodies. Granted, those goodies are amazing. Who wouldn´t want to live in a thousand year old castle (too bad it´s in Scotland) or have dozens of "servants" cater to your every whim and need? But that lifestyle depends on people believing that you are deserving of such wealth and privilege because you happened to be

Boston — Black students at Harvard University are organizing a graduation ceremony of their own this year to recognize the achievements of black students and faculty members some say have been overlooked. More than 700 students and guests are registered to attend Harvard´s first Black Commencement, which will take place two days before the school´s traditional graduation events. (Snip) Every student will receive a stole made of traditional African kente cloth, meant to symbolize their shared heritage and to be worn with their cap and gown at the university´s graduation. Students have raised $35,000 for the event, mostly from schools within the university.

Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton acknowledged Friday that Democratic candidates around the country still face basic questions about what they stand for and which policies their party supports. Speaking at a Democrat Women’s Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C., Clinton urged party leaders to return to the basics and lay out the party’s values for voters. Fair wages, the “absolute promise of universal health care,” public school funding, gun safety reform and equal pay were at the top of the former first lady’s agenda items that she thought should stay central to the Democratic Party’s platform.

John McCain always said he’d go down fighting, and so he has, dickering from his deathbed over CIA nominee Gina Haspel and pre-emptively disinviting President Donald Trump from his funeral, then leaving as a legacy some fierce final words for the leader of his party, who is now a political enemy. All Trump displays is “a reality-show facsimile of toughness,” the six-term Arizona senator and former GOP presidential candidate, who for a generation of Washington politicians has defined genuine toughness, writes in his forthcoming memoir. The irony of McCain’s curtain-closing contretemps with the president is that it is clearly
