The diplomatic dishes China picked
to keep Donald Trump happy at
a state banquet

As a man noted for his simple tastes and who does not seem receptive to new and exotic foods, Donald Trump presents a challenge for banquet organisers where the US president is the guest of honour. (Snip) The dishes on the menu included coconut-flavoured chicken soup, seafood chowder, Kung Pao chicken, stewed beef steak in tomato sauce, braised vegetables in premium broth and grouper fillets in hot chilli oil. Local delicacies that disturb Western culinary sensibilities, such as thousand-year-old eggs and bird’s nests, or like shark’s fin soup raise ethical concerns, were definitely off the menu. Comments:
Some of the Chinese were amazed that the President was served meals that they could cook themselves at home, rather than something exotic. He ate what I would eat....and I certainly would not eat 1000-year-old eggs!

This could have been written by one of the interns at Vanity Fair. Surely Ms. Huang knows that Peking Duck is not wildly exotic and it is quite delicious. Fairly simple delicious taste after a long multi-step cooking procedure. Roast duck.

The only thing that could have been really offputting would have been the presentation of a whole fish - head and all - and the offering to an honored guest of its eye. It was offered to me at a luxurious dinner in Hong Kong years ago, and I had to turn it down. Fortunately I was not a head of state.

Exactly, #1, and remember this President is comfortable and quite familiar with sophisticated Chinese cuisine. The media continues to present Trump as some inexperienced rube. It goes without saying that the Trump’s gracious Chinese hosts made every effort to make sure all was pleasing for his particular tastes.

Making things they thought he would enjoy is the most basic courtesy. I wouldn´t make shellfish for my daughter-in-law, because I know she doesn´t like it.

Some very good restaurants in NYC´s china town district (possibly POTUS has a favorite) that serve non-Americanized fare, i.e., Peking Duck and Sharks fin soup among others. While a whole fish head to tail doesn´t bother me, thousand-year-old eggs aren´t something to serve the uninitiated. It was the former president who was part of the arugula crowd aka "I like bitter greens". Someone´s nose might be out of shape since DJT was served a 6 course meal vs. 4 for the former.

Re #4, it wasn’t the whole fish. It was the idea that the honored guest is given the eye and expected to eat it. A custom in China.

When we were stationed at an American embassy overseas our defense attaché was invited to a dinner by the Chinese ambassador where he was served dried jellyfish. Being a tough old school Army colonel, he ate it. I’m glad that our president didn’t have to deal with something like that.

My only other comment is - who would ruin lovely sweet grouper by dousing it in chili oil?

"Postnatal confinement" - where new mothers do not leave the house, have visitors or shower for a month after giving birth - is said to be widespread among the UK´s Chinese community. Experts warn that few in the medical profession know this occurs. "Being confined in your flat is important," says Ching Ching Turner, from her home in London that she has not left since giving birth 28 days earlier. (Snip) Confinement is common across Asia and in China there are special hospitals where mothers stay confined for a month, sometimes only seeing their babies once a day. It is carried out

When The Saints Of First Baptist Church

“Prayers don’t work. We need legislation.” This has been many secular progressives’ mantra in response to recent mass shootings in America. On Sunday, after a gunman murdered more than 20 people during a church service in Sutherland Springs, Texas, some of them found proof of the powerlessness of prayer. (Snip) But for those familiar with the Bible’s promises concerning prayer and violence, nothing could be further from the truth. When those saints of First Baptist Church were murdered yesterday, God wasn’t ignoring their prayers. He was answering them. “Deliver us from evil.” Millions of Christians throughout the world pray these words

U.S. President Donald Trump, one of the most powerful and controversial political players in the world, is coming to Tokyo on Sunday, kicking off a 12-day trip around Asia, including South Korea and China. (Snip) “This is a big difference from the Obama administration,” said one high-ranking official, speaking on condition of anonymity. President Barack Obama, Trump’s predecessor, was often reluctant to meet with Abe, and multiple officials said communication between his aides and their Japanese counterparts wasn’t necessarily smooth. But since his inauguration on Jan. 20, Trump has met and talked with Abe at an unprecedented pace. They have held four

Former IRS executive Lois G. Ms. Lerner and Holly Paz, her deputy at the IRS, filed documents in court Thursday saying tapes and transcripts of depositions they gave in a court case this year must remain sealed in perpetuity, or else they could spur an enraged public to retaliate. “Whenever Mss. He said, “We’ve got limitations on all constitutional amendments in one form or another.” This position is contrary to the clear language of the amendment, which states that the right to keep and bear arms “shall not be

Brooklyn College is kowtowing to cop-hating students by directing officers who need a bathroom break to the broken-down facilities in a building on the far edge of campus. Amid a planned petition drive to ban cops from the taxpayer-funded campus, Donald Wenz, the school’s director of public safety, told the student newspaper The Excelsior that he’s trying to keep New York’s Finest out of sight. While Wenz said all of the school’s restrooms were technically open to cops, the college prefers they stick to those in the isolated West End Building, “rather than walking across either quad to use the
