Montpelier, VT - Former Vermont U.S. Sen. James Jeffords, who in 2001 tipped control of the Senate when he quit the Republican Party to become an independent, died Monday. He was 80. Jeffords died in Washington, said Diane Derby, a former aide to Jeffords. He had been in declining health, she said. Jeffords had announced in 2005 that he would not seek a fourth term, citing his and his wife´s health problems. "I have had an enormously satisfying career, one that I would not have traded for any other," Jeffords said when he retired. "In no other job do you

RIP, Senator Jeffords. However, I remember how Pete Domenici couldn´t hold back the tears when the committee chairmanship he had waited so long to hold was ripped away in an instant. And how Trent Lott immediately disbanded the Singing Senators. Jeffords objected and Lott told him where to put his objection.

For the record, Diane Derby was a newspaper reporter before she worked for Jeffords. Most of his staff were liberals, and I think he was losing it mentally long before he retired.
His wife was a huge liberal.
I wouldn´t be surprised if he was soft as a grape when he switched parties. Very convenient, no?

Arguably the world´s best chess player ever, Garry Kasparov is on a new mission. He hopes to convince the world that the biggest threat to global unrest is not the Islamic State, al-Qaida or North Korea. Instead it is Vladimir Putin, Russia´s president from 2000 to 2008 and then again from 2012 to today. In an interview with Yahoo News and Finance Anchor Bianna Golodryga, Kasparov outlined his reasons for believing that Putin should be what keeps the world up at night. He chided President Barack Obama for being too late in addressing Putin´s aggression in Ukraine — ultimately annexing

Phoenix - Federal authorities who have pushed back against Arizona´s attempts to confront illegal immigration in recent years face a Tuesday deadline to comment on two state immigration policies being scrutinized by the courts. The Obama administration is scheduled to provide input in a challenge of Gov. Jan Brewer´s policy that denies driver´s licenses to certain young immigrants who have avoided deportation under a change ordered by the president. White House officials are also expected to urge a judge to throw out Arizona´s 2005 immigrant smuggling ban. Brewer and the Obama administration have clashed over illegal immigration before, most notably

The USMC is preparing to deploy 2,100 Marines to Kuwait under the auspices of Special-Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force (SPMAGTF). The deployment was planned before the current "conflict in Iraq and Syria with the Islamic State" began. According to Defense News, Colonel Kenneth DeTreux said the SPMAGTF will be deployed in "fiscal ´15." They will have "attack aircraft, the AV-8B Harrier, and support aircraft such as the MV-22 Osprey and KC-130 Super Hercules." The SPMAGTF "will be equipped to perform noncombat evacuation, humanitarian assistance, infrastructure support, tactical aircraft recovery, fixed-site security and theater sustainment missions." President Obama will deliver a speech on "America´s economic greatness" Thursday at Northwestern University in Chicago as the White House looks to refocus attention on the economy ahead of the midterm elections. Obama will "take a step back from the rush of current events to explain what we´ve done to recover from the Great Recession and what we need to do to ensure that more middle-class Americans feel that progress in their own lives," senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer said in an email to supporters. The president will also tie America´s economic prosperity to its ability to project leadership across the

The Northeast, once the nation’s political engine that produced presidents, House speakers and Senate giants including the late Edward M. Kennedy, is losing clout in Washington as citizens flee the high-tax region, according to experts worried about the trend. The Census Bureau reports that population growth has shifted to the South and the result is that the 11 states that make up the Northeast are being bled dry of representation in Washington. Critics blame rising taxes in states such as Massachusetts and Connecticut for limiting population growth in the Northeast to just 15 percent from 1983 to 2013, while the

The Obama era hasn’t been a period of progress for black Capitol Hill staffers, and aides say a “diversity drain” of many senior African Americans to the private sector and the White House in recent years is partly to blame. “I started on the Hill 10 years ago, and I don´t see a significant difference in the number” of black congressional staffers, John Jones, the chief of staff to Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, told The Daily Beast. “[Progress]

The GAI report also included a breakdown of Obama’s PDB attendance record between terms; he attended 42.4% of his PDBs in his first term and 41.3% in his second. The GAI’s alarming findings come on the heels of Obama’s 60 Minutes comments on Sunday, wherein the president laid the blame for the Islamic State’s (ISIS) rapid rise squarely at

The man who jumped the White House fence this month and sprinted through the front door made it much farther into the building than previously known, overpowering one Secret Service officer and running through much of the main floor, according to three people familiar with the incident. An alarm box near the front entrance of the White House designed to alert guards to an intruder had been muted at what officers believed was a request of the usher’s office, said a Secret Service official who spoke on the condition of anonymity. For President Obama, the color of a man’s skin is far more important than the content of his character. On the night when a police officer was shot in a Missouri town torn by racial strife, the president donned a shiny tuxedo to attend a ritzy black awards dinner, where he said police nationwide are to blame for community mistrust, even claiming that “most Americans” think the country is racist. Remember, when Ferguson exploded in racial rage in August, Mr. Obama chose not to curtail his 15-day vacation, spending day after day on the golf course in the white-skinned, white-wined, millionaire playground

WASHINGTON — The Senate’s minority whip is confident about Republicans being the majority in the 114th Congress — if conservatives can set aside differences and work to combat the massive influx of donor cash that has Democratic campaigns ahead in the money race. Only in the majority, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) stresses, can conservatives make headway on tamping down overregulation, repealing and replacing Obamacare, securing the “chaotic” border, getting Keystone XL moving, and bringing civilized debate back to the upper chamber. And only by realizing the gravity of the battle for November, he argues, can Republicans relegate Harry Reid (D-Nev.)

Officers allegedly performed a string of security lapses after Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez shot at least seven bullets at the executive mansion in Washington from his car. At the time, President Barack Obama, his wife Michelle and their older daughter Malia were not at home, but their younger daughter Sasha and Mrs Obama´s mother, Marian Robinson, were inside.
