Montpelier, VT - Former Vermont U.S. Sen. James Jeffords, who in 2001 tipped control of the Senate when he quit the Republican Party to become an independent, died Monday. He was 80. Jeffords died in Washington, said Diane Derby, a former aide to Jeffords. He had been in declining health, she said. Jeffords had announced in 2005 that he would not seek a fourth term, citing his and his wife´s health problems. "I have had an enormously satisfying career, one that I would not have traded for any other," Jeffords said when he retired. "In no other job do you

RIP, Senator Jeffords. However, I remember how Pete Domenici couldn´t hold back the tears when the committee chairmanship he had waited so long to hold was ripped away in an instant. And how Trent Lott immediately disbanded the Singing Senators. Jeffords objected and Lott told him where to put his objection.

For the record, Diane Derby was a newspaper reporter before she worked for Jeffords. Most of his staff were liberals, and I think he was losing it mentally long before he retired.
His wife was a huge liberal.
I wouldn´t be surprised if he was soft as a grape when he switched parties. Very convenient, no?

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been through the political battles more than any major politician since Richard Nixon – and she has a lot in common with her former foe. But despite the blanket coverage of the former First Lady and her ubiquitous husband, there are still a good number of interesting facts about her that have been buried over the years. She likes to get her drink on. Hanging out in Cartagena in 2012 with her staff at the Summit of the Americas, then-Secretary of State Clinton was photographed with her hair down and a drink in

BROWNSVILLE — At the groundbreaking ceremony Monday for SpaceX´s commercial spaceport on the Texas Gulf coast, the founder of the aerospace company said the survival of mankind may hang on colonization of other planets. The company´s future commercial orbital spaceport in Boca Chica, near Brownsville, could be a key player in the race to Mars, said Elon Musk, who is the CEO. “I´m an optimist,” Musk said. “I wouldn´t have gotten into the rocket business otherwise.” Musk said SpaceX expects to begin construction on the site by mid-2015 and launch at least one commercial flight per month by late 2016.

EMILY´s List, an organization dedicated to electing women who oppose legal restrictions on abortion and support taxpayer-funding of abortion, held a fundraiser in New York City today, but one notable name was dropped from the list of speakers: Alison Lundergan Grimes, Kentucky´s Democratic senatorial candidate. (Photo) As the screenshot above (which was sent along by a Republican source) shows, EMILY´s List had touted Grimes as a speaker at the event, but she is no longer listed as a speaker. A spokeswoman for Grimes did not reply to emails asking why the Democratic candidate canceled her appearance at the event.

On Sept. 12th, Jennifer Whalen, a 39-year-old mother of three in the rural town of Washingtonville, Pa., went to jail to begin serving a 9-to-18-month sentence. Whalen’s crime was, in effect, ordering pills online that her older daughter took in the first several weeks of an unplanned pregnancy, when she was 16, to induce a miscarriage. The medication was a combination of mifepristone (formerly called RU-486) and misoprostol. The drugs have been available from a doctor with a prescription in the United States since 2000 and are used around the world to induce miscarriage. Recent research increasingly suggests that early

Obama doesn’t look very happy these days. His face is drawn, his hair graying, his voice a monotone. To keep going he needs a lot of luxury vacations, therapeutic golf with low-level lackeys, and non-stop fawning from billionaire Democrats at fundraisers. He seems to have tuned out so completely that he hasn’t a clue what’s happening. Despite a year of briefings, ISIS was a complete a surprise to him. The only outside stimulus that got a reaction from the commander in chief was his abysmal poll numbers. It’s tough be to a pathological narcissist when the applause stops. The destruction

There’s been lots of debate lately in housing circles about the impact of student debt on home ownership. Now there’s a new study out that attempts to put a number on that impact: 414,000. That’s how many home sales will not happen this year because of high levels of student loan debt, according to a report from John Burns Consulting, an Irvine-based firm that advises home builders. That’s equal to about 8% of all home sales, and enough to dent the housing industry by $83 billion a year. The report estimates that the number of households under age 40 that

The United Nations Climate Summit will begin in New York this Tuesday, but environmental activists didn’t wait. All day Sunday, they filled the streets of Manhattan for a march that featured Al Gore, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio, and various Hollywood actors. But they certainly didn’t act like a movement that was winning. There was a tone of fatalism in the comments of many with whom I spoke; they despair that the kind of radical change they advocate probably won’t result from the normal democratic process. It’s no surprise then that the rhetoric of climate-change activists has become increasingly

He was a leading figure in one of the biggest climate change marches to date. But it seems Robert F Kennedy Jr was not so forthcoming when it came to questions about his own carbon footprint. Confronted by a reporter asking if he would give up his phone and car, the environmental lawyer became visibly irate before grabbing the microphone and accusing her of ´destroying democracy´ as a member of the press. The interview in New York yesterday afternoon started with a conversation about the number of flyers produced for the event, which Kennedy Jr claimed was necessary to garner ´people power´.

I was feeling pretty shy about meeting him. The 81-year-old Redheaded Stranger is an icon, one of America’s top songwriters and, as Rolling Stone said, “a hippie’s hippie and

I know a lot of people are giddy at the prospect of Republicans taking the Senate this November, but that’s becoming less and less likely. It’s not because Democrats are rallying around a particular mission or set of candidates; it’s because Republicans and conservatives aren’t. It seems like I’m always writing on issues no one wants to hear are mistakes, such as messaging or social issues. But I don’t care. These things have to be said. If these columns are received like a gaseous cousin on a long car trip through the desert, so be it. Crack a window… If things continue on their current course, the GOP will not retake the Senate.
