The impending introduction of legislation to overhaul the country’s badly strained immigration system received an extraordinary endorsement on Sunday from Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, who, after holding back for weeks, appeared on no fewer than seven television talk shows to explain and defend a plan that he said would be “a net positive for the country, now and in the future.” It was a striking show of confidence from Mr. Rubio, one of eight members of a bipartisan Senate group that has been crafting a plan to provide a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants;
Comments: This should be a cautionary tale for many of my fellow posters here at LCom. Just like Christie before him, he also blazes on the scene and then gets seduced by the dRATS controlled media to believe he´s presidential "material." Do you see a pattern here, yet? Rubio becomes one of the "gang-of eight" to do all this secret immigration negotiating when it is the responsibility of the 100 first in open session. Is this the 1,500 page bill that Senators are being "forced" to vote on with less than 24 hours after it is "submitted?"
Rubio reveals that he is no Conservative, not even a middle-of-the-roader. Is he in the pay of foreign interests? Whatever, he is quite willing to do what he is smart enough to know will cause lasting harm to this country, perhaps destroy it in the long term.
I want to see the border provisions, but from what else I´ve seen it looks like a good plan. The visa entry-exit system get´s fixed, e-verify is mandatory, no obamacare, no green card for 10 years. A fine and a background check for temporary status. It looks like a big improvement from ´06´s Kennedy-McCain disaster and the ´07 Kyl-Kennedy bill.
They can say, no government goodies, BUT, that´s not to say once the illegals are given the green light, the next step will be, "well we need to let them have (fill in the blank), because (fill in the blank). The bottom line is, they are being given amnesty if this goes thru, & it is a kick in the teeth for every person that ever jump thru all the bureaucratic hoops that Washington can think up to let them come here legally. It is also an insult to us all, for politicians to get on TV & tell lies & expect us to believe it. The "mushroom" principle is alive & well in Washington DC.........!!! God help us all.
Some pretty silly posts here. Rubio isn´t a traitor and he is a conservative. Because you disagree on an issue doesn´t make him a traitor.
Some of us will have to get real. We aren´t deporting 12M illegals and in 20 years this problem will go away--because the kids of these illegals will be citizens by birth, so we are going to have to do something between now and then. If we get border enforcement first, as Rubio says, what´s wrong with this plan?
But none of us have seen any details, so the outrage is a bit premature.
I never had a lot of hope for Rubio...he´s McCain Jr..... Rubio can just forget about running for prez...people are sick of rinos..and they never win...McCain Dole Romney...but I guess he can be happy the NY Times loves him..
Common sense will tell you that when they flood the legal US job market with tens of millions of cheap foreign workers by way of an amnesty for 11 to 20 million illegal aliens, plus allowing millions more foreigners into the country to work by way of so-called "guest worker" programs that it will be American workers who will be holding the crappy end of the stick as wages and benefits go down in US industries who could then hire those foreign workers who everybody knows are willing to work for much less then American workers can accept, and still maintain their customary US standard of living. Many American workers do not realize that those foreign workers will be legally able to compete with them for just about all of the scarce jobs out there today across the entire US economy. Imagine being an American black youth just out of high school looking for work once the job market is flooded with many millions of foreign workers?
In the years ahead if this goes through the Republicans are going to be headed into political oblivion when the Democrats pick up ten million of more new foreign born voters as a result of all this.
Why does the govt have to be so involved? Back in the 70s after the fall of Vietnam, thousands of refugees needed a place to go. Here in Minnesota, churches sponsored boatloads of Hmong refugees, helped them get started, and looked after them for a few years, guiding them to acclimate to their new home. I realize that illegal immigrants are not refugees, but perhaps the govt should seal the border, and the churches step in. A deadline can be established that all undocumented people who are not sponsored by a church by such-and-such a date, will have to start the process of returning to their native country. Those sponsored by a church, are to fulfill various requirements (fine, learn English, etc). This could be a win-win situation. The churches can show and share their faith (and values) and the illegals have a choice of two pathways to choose. I would hope that Rubio would explore all areas of solution and not depend on the govt to be the answer.
Dems will promise they will control the border, but after the bill is passed they will never control the border and the rinos can cry... and the dems can come back in five years & do it again .The dems do the repubs the same way with promises to balance the budget, they agree to budget cuts along with tax increases...the tax increases take effect immediately the budget cuts never happen.
Both party`s are trolling for votes regarding illegal border crossing. There is simply no national need to legalize anyone from anywhere right now. We have 90 million unemployed citizens and legalizing millions more will only exacerbate the problem.
I won´t vote for Rubio for anything now. And let´s stop with this phony argument about deporting 12 million illegals. You cut off taxpayer benefits, cut off jobs, they will self deport. They were doing that before the traitor Rubio got together with the amnesty gang. Any bill that is 1500 pages long is a bad bill because you know no on will be reading it until it has passed and then everyone will find out just how bad it is.
I was for Rubio when he was way behind Crist in the polls. I voted for him.
If Schummer ses No Obstacles in the way means the security issue is not handled. Rubio specically said on RUSH that he would not support a bill unless the borders were secured first. He has f´d the conservatives.
On another note I don´t care about McCain´s war hero status. Others were prisoners also.
He is not a hero for flying poorly as was his track record and getting shot down.
He has a vile temper and a small man. If he is a hero for surviving a prison camp, he is a traitor for undercutting Bush in the middle of a WAR(Iraq).
Rubio made the TV slam this morning. I don´t buy it. Anything with Schumer is going to be dishonest. The fact that no one has seen the 1,500 page law which will have a one day hearing before voting, convinces me that it is another fraud with Marco the front man.
Shame. (His mail box was full so I guess he is getting an ear full.)
Rubio went on Rush and promised no amnesty without first securing the borders. Rubio lied through his teeth, on the air, on Rush´s airtime. Will Rush now call him out for the conniving little double crosser he is?
My question for Rush: did he at least kiss you first?
I actually listened to Rubio on the Sunday shows today. You shouldn´t believe the NYT. Rubio was not for amnesty but for ten years before they could even get a green card and also Rubio is still requiring border security first. I am amazed that Lucianne posters are so ill- informed.
I listened carefully to every single word from Senator Rubio. I am not ill-informed or hard of hearing. I simply am on to the very clever spin job. Let´s take border security. Border security definition please? It´s beyond foolish to accept that without knowing WHAT it means. Then he mentions they get no federal benefits. How about state benefits? We know they will be getting all sorts of freebies. I am not ill-informed. I just do not like being lied to and tricked by these politicians.
The fact that Rubio was on all of the Sunday programs should be enough for anyone who knows why these shows exist to understand what he´s all about. Because he is playing kissy-face with scum like Schumer and Durbin, he will now be accorded the same false wisdom that is usually given to the likes of McCain and Grahamnesty.
Hold your powder! Rubio is brilliant. He is using the megaphone to telegraph the best resolution to the illegal immigrant problem. You know anything that comes from this Progressive run congress will not look anything like this plan... So he will reject it at vote time.
I still trust Rubio. He´s a strong Christian Freedom loving Tea Partier, trying to manipulate the machine.
If the Republicans do not have the basic enforcement elements of immigration reform in place and up and running before the millions of illegal aliens here now are granted any sort of legal status the enforcement elements will never happen.
Back after the big 1986 amnesty, as soon as the illegal aliens were granted a legal status, the Democrats and their political allies the liberal ethnic and immigrant rights groups, started fighting and sabotaging the enforcement elements that they agreed to in the basic reform legislation, tooth and nail, administratively through the bureaucracy, legislatively in Congress, and legally through the courts, until those enforcement elements were either watered down to ineffectiveness, or were essentially abandoned. No doubt the Democrats will do the same thing again as a good portion of their so-called Hispanic vote does not want any effective immigration laws enforced against their countrymen, friends, and relatives who will continue to sneak into the USA in the future.
The most important enforcement element is a mandatory enhanced e-verify employee electronic verification system underpinned by a modern high-tech social security card bearing a photo of the bearer, other biometric identifiers, with electronic verification capability. Without that up and running, new illegal aliens will continue to sneak into the country or overstay visas and border crossing card time limits, and will fraudulently use valid identification documents and social security cards that were issued to other people to get a job here. As long as that can happen there is no way to stop future mass uncontrolled illegal immigration.
The border crossers have no desire to work! They have been thoroughly instructed which forms need to be completed and what the steps are for getting on the dole! With brochures in Mexico now instructing Mexicans the proper method to get food stamps they are stampeding across the Rio Grande. Thanks, WH and DC Dems.
#36, actually a LOT of them work...some work several jobs and that is why my white male friend can´t get work around here. Sure, they also work the system, but don´t think they don´t want to work. Besides those that deal drugs, haven´t you noticed that most hispanics seem to drive really nice trucks and have all kinds of other goodies?? My friend would do anything for one of their jobs but a lot of these employers are hispanic too and only hire paises. I told my friend to wear brown contact lenses....
Anyone who’s ever gone on a diet is told to lay off the booze because it’s high in calories. And that, of course, must make it very fattening indeed. Go onto the NHS Direct website, and you’ll be told a glass of wine contains as many calories as a slice of cake. Or if you prefer beer, the British Nutrition Foundation reminds you two pints are roughly the equivalent in calories to a full glass of single cream. So you may be surprised to learn that there’s no scientific evidence whatsoever to support the idea that alcohol makes you on weight. That’s hugely counter-intuitive, I know, because alcohol certainly is said to contain lots of calories.
President Barack Obama sounded a nostalgic personal note Sunday night and offered a rare self-assessment while criticizing congressional Republicans as an "impediment" to governing during the start of a West Coast fundraising tour for the Democratic Party. Obama told donors the sight of Mt. Rainier illuminated by a setting sun was particularly special because it reminded him of his mother, who attended high school in the Seattle area. "I feel the spirit of my mom," he said. He also attempted to contrast himself with Republicans who control the House of Representatives, saying they are "more focused on positioning themselves for
Los Angeles - Rather than thanking a list of friends and colleagues, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis used their American Music Awards acceptance speech to send a message of tolerance on Sunday night. Ben Haggerty, the rapper known as Macklemore, accepted the award for favorite rap/hip-hop album, then quoted Martin Luther King Jr. in a live satellite feed from the rap group´s latest tour stop. "Due to the fact that we are in Florida tonight accepting this award I want to acknowledge Trayvon Martin and the hundreds and hundreds of kids each year that are dying due to racial profiling and the violence that follows it," he said.
China and India’s success in weakening the latest global warming agreement created friction with other developing nations that are seeking to step up the fight against climate change. The two countries insisted on single-word changes for a deal at a United Nations conference involving 190 nations on Nov. 23. Instead of making “commitments” to roll back fossil fuel emissions, they signed up for “contributions,” a formulation that allows more flexibility in their action. Those last-minute revisions at a meeting that ran overtime by almost 30 hours underscored the reluctance of China and India to join in the sort of emissions
Washington - Hobby Lobby, a chain of crafts stores, closes on Sundays, costing its owners millions but honoring their Christian faith. The stores play religious music. Employees get free spiritual counseling. But they do not get free insurance coverage for some contraceptives, even though President Obama’s health care law requires it. Hobby Lobby, a corporation, says that forcing it to provide the coverage would violate its religious beliefs. A federal appeals court agreed, and the Supreme Court is set to decide on Tuesday whether it will hear the Obama administration’s appeal from that decision or appeals from one of
A historic agreement on Iran´s nuclear programme was made possible by months of unprecedented secret meetings between US and Iranian officials, in further signs of the accelerating detente between two of the world´s most adversarial powers, it emerged on Sunday. The meetings ran parallel to official negotiations involving five other world powers, (Snip) The Obama administration asked journalists not to publish details they had uncovered of the secret diplomacy until the Geneva talks were over for fear of derailing them. The Associated Press and a Washington-based news website, Al-Monitor, finally did so
Tokyo - Japan’s foreign minister on Sunday refused to recognize China’s newly claimed air defense zone over disputed islands, signaling that Japan would not back down as tensions increased in the maritime dispute. China on Saturday said its “air defense identification zone” would give it the right to identify and possibly take military action against aircraft near the islands in the East China Sea. The uninhabited islands are administered by Japan but claimed by China and Taiwan. China’s announcement appeared to be the latest step in what analysts have called a strategy to chip away at Japan’s claims of control of the islands.
Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) said on MSNBC’s “PoliticsNation” Wednesday that when Jesus fed five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fish, “he didn’t charge food stamps.” “When Jesus had those five loaves and two fishes, he didn´t charge food stamps. He didn´t ask anybody how much money they had. He fed them because they were hungry, and that´s really where we ought to be,” McDermott said in response to Republican critics of the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). In September, the House approved a plan by Republicans to cut $39 billion in food stamps over the next
The nation’s view of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, colored by the horrific Benghazi assassination of the U.S. ambassador to Libya on her watch, has suddenly turned upside down, with more now holding an unfavorable opinion of the likely 2016 presidential candidate. A new YouGov/Economist poll found Clinton, whose approval ratings have typically been sky high, with an unfavorable rating of 48 percent, more than the 46 percent who have a favorable opinion of her. The YouGov pollsters said that the change in American attitudes toward Clinton "suggests that negative press surrounding the tragic
President Obama will cast growing income inequality and a decline in economic mobility as a “fundamental threat to the American dream” during a speech Wednesday in Washington. The speech will serve as an early preview for next year’s State of the Union address, according to a White House official, who said Obama would focus much of his energy over the next three years on the issue. “The decisions we make over the next few years will determine whether or not our children will grow up in an America where, if you work hard, you can get ahead,” the official said.
Bill Clinton, the cliché goes, was the first black president, no matter his skin color. That being the case, Barack Obama is not the first black president, or the first African-American president, if you prefer, but the first hippie president. Clinton’s southern background and lifestyle were indeed more typically black, just as Obama’s was more typically hippie. And we’re not just talking about the “Choom gang” here, scarfing “Maui Wowie” on the sands of Oahu. We’re talking about all of it, the whole multi-culti-missing-white-mother-vanished-Kenyan-father-anti-imperialist-America-is-always-the-enemy-and-don’t-you-forget-it-nine-yards. And like most hippie culture as I knew and experienced it, it wasn’t about “peace and love.” Not
During a presentation at the White House in which President Barack Obama touted the benefits of the Affordable Care Act, the president declared that his signature health care reform law was not going to be repealed. This assertion led his administration members, his staff, and audience members to rise from their seats and give the president a standing ovation. Obama said that ACA opponents’ alternative to the health care reform law is to champion repeal and going back to the health care delivery system status quo ante. He specifically cited Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) who he said was asked directly for
A woman has revealed how difficult it is to eat healthily and stay full when living off an average food stamp budget. Melinda Moulton, from Huntington, Vermont, was one of 200 people to take part in the 3Squares Challenge, which saw her living for a week on just $36 worth of food, or around $1.71 a meal. Opting to try and eat as healthily as possible, Ms Moulton resorted to cheap foods like yogurt for breakfast, two handfuls of peanuts for lunch and lentil stew for dinner, all of which left her unsatisfied.´I don´t know how people do it,´ said
Good stuff from Jonathan Turley at today’s House hearing on executive power, although I regret that I couldn’t find a more user-friendly format for you to watch. There’s no compilation clip; you’ll have to make do with the C-SPAN embed by fast-forwarding to the time cues I give you and being patient while the vid buffers (and buffers, and buffers).(Snip)That brings us to point two: Even if Congress can’t stop Obama, the courts can. The problem there, though, says Turley, is that O and the DOJ have argued successfully in many cases that no one has standing to sue him
