| Our politics have become so polarized and corrupted that a president of the United States cannot even attend an event devoted to drawing people closer to God and bridge partisan and cultural divides without being lectured about his policies. Last Thursday at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., Dr. Ben Carson, director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and a 2008 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, broke with a 61-year-old tradition and publicly disagreed with some of the president´s policies, such as "ObamaCare," taxation and the national debt.
|
Comments: The author of "Common Ground," who thinks partisanship is destroying America, didn´t like Carson´s comments. I don´t think partisanship is the problem, especially when one party thinks bipartisanship means "do it my way."

Cal Thomas used the be the voice of common sense. He has joined the brainwashed on the subject of Dr. Carson with his call for an apology.
No, Cal! This was the right Venue at the right time for him to take the opportunity to say what he did. Someone in addition to Gov. Palin and Senator Cruz need to clue in the general public. If obama can continue for 6 years to campaign for the Oval Office. We need to take any opportunity to let people know the voice of commonsense reasoning and why the country is sliding downhill under obama´s watch.

Carson would have never been allowed to go on the old urban media to say these things to the world. Fox would have had him but the other media would ignore it.
It may not have been ´appropriate´ under the circumstances but it was worth it to get the word out.
Besides, Obama espouses his drivel at every opportunity, regardless of the event.

Shame on Cal Thomas. Obviously that once-great-brain-trust-conservative has been hanging around with Elinor Cliff far too long. When the dear-leader-obama apologizes to SOTU members, Paul Ryan, President Bush and too many others to count for HIS ignorant LECTURES and rants, perhaps Dr. Carson should consider "apologizing".......Never mind.. BTW, does "cal" REALLY want to get into a discussion about "corruption and polarization" while defending the agitator-in-chief?

Did Obama ever apologize to the justices of the Supreme Court after he called them out in a state of the union address?
Dr. Carson talked about faith and what would get this nation on its feet again. Addressing the healthcare situation is a big part of that. If the truth contradicts Obama´s views, well tough.
Is the prayer breakfast all about the president, or all about faith and how to live it?

FTA: I´m told organizers were astonished and disapproving of the critical parts of Carson´s keynote address. The breakfast is supposed to bring together people from different political viewpoints and cultures. It is supposed to bridge divides, not widen them.
Really?? What would you expect from a guy who went on tour with Bob Beckel. Dr. Carson´s comments were all about bridging divides and speaking the truth. Sorry Cal, you are wrong on this one. It´s clear that the time he spent with Beckel has ruined his clarity in critical thinking.

Wow, and I used to like Cal Thomas. 0bama has no problem calling people out even when he was outright wrong. At one of the State of the Union addresses, he lied about the Supreme Court, and embarrassed the Supreme Court judges, and 0bama was the one who was wrong. 0bama lied about the illegals getting free healthcare, and when someone called out, "You lie," they were appalled. What Dr. Ben Carson said was the truth, it was appropriate, and for once someone was showing common sense, which is something very much lacking in 0bama´s policies. Go Dr. Carson; hope he makes a run for senate.

Unlike Cal and others that make their living inside the beltway, Carson makes his living in a very non DC environment. And Carson has a right to redress grievances with his goobernment (pesky thing that Constitution). So he isn´t obliged to honor a politico creed and he does have a right to redress grievances. So, Cal, he should apologize for not abiding by politico rules and exercising his constitutional rights? I don’t believe that is neither appropriate nor proper. It is we that the people that fear and loathe our goobernment and it is beyond time to be pleasant and polite about it.

Odd how Christians are supposed to have values but never live by them, hold to the teachings of Christ but never speak them, live by our faith but never share it.
We make room in the public square for all views but the Christian one. Conservatives should never speak out loud enough to be heard, in the eyes of the left.
And this whole thing´s starting to have a "How dare he speak out loud" quality to it that begins to deeply disturb me - sort of like Christians are to be seen (when they must) but not heard.

The man insults everybody, from respected world leaders to hard-working Americans and is hardly ever called on it (unless it´s Iran or North Korea). What Dr. Carter said was not insulting, it was the simple truth eloquently couched. And I think God would have been pleased to hear what Dr. Carter said.

Uh Cal... the President said an elderly woman in need of a pacemaker should "take a pain pill" and the President is one who refused to vote to protect babies who were born after surviving an abortion attempt.
Obamacare, taxation and the national debt will all work to destroy our country. To compare an analysis of those things with a speech by Imus years ago that mentioned "sexually suggestive comments" is comparing apples and oranges.
The other side wants to allow our elderly to die and to support the killing of the unborn. I think they can withstand a speech by an accomplished black doctor.

If I were a resident of Oz or Sugarplumvisionville, I might see things Cal’s way. However, I believe I have my priorities straight while Cal, sadly, has his priorities twisted up in knots. Wake up, Cal! Our opposition does not consist of ladies and gentlemen. In their hearts, they are thugs. Thugs whose credo is Power At Any Cost. ANY Cost Whatsoever! Moreover, looking back at this crucial juncture in our nation’s history, I believe Dr. Ben Carson will be perceived as having been a gift from God.

Odd that Mr. Thomas doesn´t think that the President owes his opponents an apology for using the prayer breakfast to call them hypocrites.
"I have to say this is now our fifth prayer breakfast and it is always just a wonderful event. But I do worry sometimes that as soon as we leave the prayer breakfast, everything we’ve been talking about the whole time at the prayer breakfast seems to be forgotten — on the same day of the prayer breakfast. (Laughter.) I mean, you’d like to think that the shelf life wasn’t so short. (Laughter.) But I go back to the Oval Office and I start watching the cable news networks and it’s like we didn’t pray. Second, if the libs had needed to do the same to a Republican president, Reagan, say, they would have, that long ago. All these qualms about upsetting precedents in the name of decorum are out the window and have been for decades...read the memo, buddy. But surely someone has to speak the truth publicly to Obama sometime, and what better place than an event where Barry has to remain seated and silent, and just listen?

Political polarization is nothing new. What is the purpose of politics if not to express and try to manage serious differences of opinion? If everyone agreed about everything, or if the disagreements were not substantial, who needs politics anyway? I am always amazed when people bemoan the fact that there is heated disagreement about political matters. When has it ever been otherwise? To say that politics has become polarized really says nothing except that one thinks there is more disagreement than there needs to be, or that it is being expressed more passionately than is necessary. But who knows how much disagreement there should be, or how passionately it ought to be expressed?
I am afraid Cal Thomas´ well-meant attempt to be a gentleman and to observe the traditions and formalities just makes him look clueless and ridiculous to many of us. His intentions are praiseworthy, but he clearly does not recognize what we are dealing with. Pretending to be bipartisan or even above politics when dealing with radical Leftists like Obama and his Democrats is foolish. It is a formula for failure. It is one reason -a very big reason in my opinion- that Mitt Romney blew his chance to be president. He tried to act like he was better than that and refused to play by the same rules the Leftists invariably use, i.e. anything goes. We are in desperate circumstances. To nit pick at Dr. Carson for taking advantage of his brief shot at the bully pulpit to sound an alarm for America is to miss the forest for the trees. We need more, not less Benjamin Carsons. He gets it. Cal Thomas, like many on the Right, does not.

I heard the concept of proportional taxation as a solution coming from God. And the question why it was necessary to hurt the guy who just threw a billion dollars into the pot. And the cost to our nation of muzzling policy discussions with fear of PC claims. And the notion that a quality education is essential to our freedom and prosperity. And the concept of allowing the individual to choose how he spends his health care dollars.
Dr Carson presented ideas on how we can improve. Its only criticism if you are publicly admit to being stuck on stupid.

Cal, when you lost your mustache, you must have misplaced your intellect as well. Sir, Dr. Carson spoke truth to power - something Bill´s Hill screamed for years. If you can´t grasp it, then sit down and fold your hands keeping your lip zipped.

Dr. Carson should apologize by saying, "I´m truly sorry that you, Obama, were elected and re-elected President."

Whaddayou nuts, Cal? Don´t care how many prayer breakfasts you´ve attended or about your hosting or attending dinners or get-togethers before the events. Who cares...Get it? Somebody - at some point - at some place - has to show the guts to stand up and disagree with ´our most holy-on-high president´. Why are so many ´walking on eggshells´ around this arrogant fool.
I don´t give a flying rat´s patoot whether or not you think Dr. Carson should apologize to Obama. Obama should be apologizing to us and thousands of others for the mess he is making in our country. Butt out, Cal. We don´t need your advice, and neither does Dr. Carson.

You have the option of sending Cal an email at the end of the article, so I did yesterday: Dear Mr. Thomas, What a disappointment and aggravation your column is! Your castigating Dr. Carson over his remarks at the prayer breakfast was every bit as out of line as your opinion that he most likely made Obama “uncomfortable.” With the help of a complicit media, Obama has made a science out of avoiding ANY challenge to his policies and the ability of anyone to debate him on an even footing. I truly hope he was squirming inside and was seething that someone had the audacity to finally pin him in his chair and give him a message he needed to hear, without the media running interference. I was thrilled to see that someone as intelligent and articulate as Dr. Ben Carson was able to FINALLY put a word in for those of us who REALLY know what “uncomfortable” IS, in this disastrous economy Obama has brought down on our heads with his unconstitutional grab for power. Pipe down and let Dr. Carson speak for the people in this country that are at the mercy of the Obama administration and whose children and grandchildren will be burdened with his asinine bureaucracy and tax bill for generations to come!!!
You all can do the same and MAYBE he´ll get the message.

At a SOTU Obama can excoriate SCOTUS sitting not 10 feet from him for a decision he didn´t like, like a spoiled prince but shouldn´t have to suffer the same indignity? How refreshing that someone had the guts to speak his mind. Cal isn´t getting enough sleep. I was shocked and disturbed to read his opinion. Did he opine when Obama insulted some of the (actual) great minds of this country (Roberts does lack common sense)? Maybe he did and I missed it.

I think that Cal Thomas has caught the Eleanor Cliff disease. Quick some one check his glass to see if he´s not drinking the Obama grape koolaid. Dr Carson did speak the truth and it was priceless to see the look of absolute dread on the face of the O´clown. Tell you what Carl old buddy I agree with you. Dr Carson should apologize after you tell your buddies on the left to apologize to the following people for their despicable treatment. Sarah Palin SCOTUS Clarence Thomas Herman Cain President George W Bush Rep Allen West Until that happens Carl you can go take a flying leap off a short ledge. Also take Cliff, Kristol, Will, and Barnes with you.

Santa Monica, Calif. - A crusade against toy guns that began in 1987 is being re-launched following the elementary school shooting in Connecticut that left dozens dead. Santa Monica activist Jerry Rubin says a personalized merit award will be sent to children who write to him about why they don´t like playing with toy guns. Rubin says his anti-toy gun project used to reward children who sent in their toy guns with teddy bears in exchange, but stopped after he ran out of the 5,000 donated stuffed animals. Less than two weeks ago, 20 children and six adults were gunned down

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.
