| Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch has been placed in the intensive care unit at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, his spokesman said Thursday. Koch spokesman George Arzt, who spoke to the former mayor this morning, told CNN affiliate WCBS that the mayor "was in obvious discomfort." "After I spoke to him ... his lead doctor and cardiologist decided that he should be put into the intensive care unit," Arzt said. Koch, 88, was hospitalized last September for anemia and underwent a blood transfusion at the same hospital. The lawyer-turned-public-servant was a U.S. congressman from 1968 until he ran for mayor

Always liked Mayor Koch. I do not agree with him most times, but he is a good guy. I wish him well. Get better soon.

Two men have been arrested after British fighter jets were scrambled to escort a Pakistan International Airways flight to an airport near London following an on-board incident. The plane, which was carrying 297 passengers en route from Lahore to Manchester, was diverted to Stansted Airport in Essex, north-east of London, after the crew activated an emergency alarm. It landed just after 11:30pm on Friday (AEST). On landing, British police arrested the men, aged 30 and 41, on suspicion of endangering an aircraft. A Bronx teacher fired after a student complained about her use of a racial slur says the whole thing is just a ridiculous case of meaning lost -- literally -- in translation. Petrona Smith, 65, was a non-tenured teacher at the bilingual school PS 211 until March 2012, when she was fired after a student complained of being called "negro" and "a failure." But Smith, who is black and a native of the West Indies, said the student misunderstood her meaning: she was using the word "negro," the word for the color black in Spanish

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. - The Interstate 5 bridge collapse into the Skagit River was caused by an oversize truck hitting the span, the Washington State Patrol chief said. "For reasons unknown at this point in time the semi struck the overhead of the bridge causing the collapse," Batiste told an overnight news conference. The truck made it off the bridge and the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Two other vehicles went into the water Thursday evening as the structure crumbled. COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Federal forecasters are predicting yet another busy hurricane season. Thursday´s outlook calls for 13 to 20 named storms, seven to 11 that strengthen into hurricanes and three to six that become major hurricanes. The prediction by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is more than what is considered an average Atlantic season. Last year was the third-busiest on record with 19 named storms. Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”

The fact that this bit of information was conveyed to the protesters by a Department of Homeland Security officer who was also in attendance. On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.
