The fly in the ointment and the flaw in the argument is the unexamined and in fact untrue assumption that all illegal immigrants are in the country to work and that they all work for businesses that can be regulated. It is also false that a nation is unable to control its borders. And it is a false either/or choice to oppose border security and strict enforcement of work permits. Obviously both are part of the solution. For a guy who seems reasonably bright, Chris Matthews can dish out more confused and irrational thinking in less time than anyone else I can think of. He seems to lack the capacity to examine and analyze whatever pops into his mind at the moment but instead has to blurt it out on the spot, ready or not. He serves as an excellent example of the liberal habit of using emotions to do his thinking for him - and, of course, of starting with his conclusions and working backwards to construct whatever emotional "arguments" he can muster to support them. Confusion hath here truly made his masterpiece.

The other point, so rarely mentioned, is that an open border also lets in people who may wish us harm. We don´t know who is crossing the border. Are they workers? Are they people looking for a handout from our welfare system? Are they terrorists?

Another pesky inconvenient truth that Tweety Bird Matthews has left out is that the uneducated masses from South of the Border whom he claims come here to ´´do the work Americans won´t do´´ can only do so because our liberal failure of a welfare system pays the Americans who should be doing those jobs to feel entitled and sit on their arses and freeload of the taxpayers. If we got rid of the welfare freeloaders, those jobs would dry up in a dayumed hurry as the freeloaders realize they´d better flip burgers and mop floors or they won´t be able to eat.

This guy is a moron. An effective enhanced e-verify system that could keep most illegal alien impostors with bogus ID out of US employment would do more to stop illegal immigration then trying to stop them at the borderline. Why would most prospective illegal aliens come here if they knew that they had little chance to get a job, get on any of the social welfare programs, or eventually be granted amnesty?

What can be conceived can be created. The Great Wall of China, over 4000 miles long, was built before the advent of modern construction machinery. The fence on our southern border would not have to be built along the centerline of the river or even along its banks. It could be built up to several hundred yards inside U.S. territory. I picture TWO fences, a primary and secondary separated by a "no man´s land", with watchtowers and heavily patrolled by vehicles and soldiers on foot. Aliens captured between the fences would be escorted back to their country. No one would make it to the secondary fence. No one would be hurt provided they submitted to the patrols and returned home. It would be expensive to build and maintain, but I do not think it could possibly cost more than what illegal aliens are costing now.

In a sense, he is right. There isn´t enough security to stop people who are determined to get in.

The problem we have is that the Federal govenrment and in many cases sanctuary cites and state that are bound and dtermined NOT to enforce the law once people do sneak in. If we simply enforced the law, fewer people would be ´rewarded´ for sneaking in and fewer would attempt to do so.

We don´t need a fence, that´s too easily defeated. We need to eliminate the reasons the illegal come here, it´s just that simple.

Free education, free citizenship to babies born here, food stamps, charities designed to cloth and house them, etc. With out these incentives the vast majority of illegals would stay put.

The risk/benefit ratio is massively weighted in favor of potential border crossers, suggesting that no level of detection and apprehension is apt to discourage invaders.

The term invaders is used advisedly. How would Americans -even Leftists- respond if informed that millions upon millions of people were crossing the border in a short span of time? This is what happened in many places on the margins of the late Western Roman empire.

The famed Western barbarian invasions were frequently peaceful and in slow motion - migrations rather than armed assaults. And the Romans came to depend more and more upon the barbarians to make up and even command their essentially all volunteer army. America´s dependence upon cheap labor and its unwillingness to protect its borders has an ominous precedent here.

When the (supposed) figure of illegal aliens has reached 11 million, most of them from south of the border, we are talking about a migration or an invasion. Left unchecked, allowed to continue, it will destroy the republic. The irony is that foreigners come to America to get away from the very things they bring with them and introduce into American culture. This cannot go on indefinitely.
