Mark Sanford On Run for Congress,
a Second Chance at Politics

Daily Beast, by John Avlon

The former governor, who ended his second term in disgrace after admitting to an extramarital affair with an Argentinean woman he described as his “soul mate,” had previously been considered a leading potential contender for the 2012 GOP nomination before the scandal consumed those ambitions. But suddenly, Sanford is back. Among many locals, he is considered the front-runner in the special election to fill the congressional seat held by Tim Scott before he was appointed to the U.S. Senate—an unusual degree of turnover in a state where Fritz Hollings served as junior senator to Strom Thurmond for 36 years.

If the man was fed up with his wife, he could have divorced her in the conventional way and the public might have forgiven him. None of us are perfect. But to bug out in the way that he did is unforgivable.

It´s only fair to recognize that this election will be determined by the voters in South Carolina. I, for one, as an outsider am going to follow this story with keen interest. I am impressed with the fact that Mr. Sanford went down and discussed his running with his ex-wife, and with his sons who are now in college. I think it helps to remember that he is not a serial philanderer - and that he intends to marry the woman with whom he had the affair. Bill Clinton is now a most popular Democrat, and I don´t ever recall his ever making a sincere apology. Humility and grace are admirable, and I detect them in Mark Sanford.

It is also fair to recognize, Sanford went off ´hiking´ the Appalachian Trail.
Contrary to South Carolina law, he left nobody in charge and his whereabouts were unknown.
This South Carlinian will exercise his rights to help ensure Sanford takes another hike.

I would hate to have some posters on a jury whereby I was the defendant. When one looks at human beings who are imperfect and expect perfection, one tends to lose mercy and balance. Yeah, knowing many of the facts, as a state resident, I would give Sanford another chance. His policies were Tea Party-like. His very awkwardness in his betrayal shows his inexperience, unlike smooth Bill Clinton who raped women and yet is to be honored as "Father of the Year. I´m afraid Republicans can never get a pass on sinning.

#4, Mr A and I live in Tim Scott´s former district. According to polling results Mark Sanford stands a very good chance of winning the election. His swift action as Governor which resulted in significantly lower property taxes for our county has not been forgotten.

His ex-wife lost most of any sympathy she had from folks around here after she wallowed in a prolonged no-holds-barred, undignified and unnecessary approach to the media. Then there was her "tell-all" book Staying True, described by one reviewer with the words "cathartic," "vengeful" and "smoking martyr" standing out. I wonder if the couple´s four sons have read it and what effect it´s had on them, especially the younger ones. She cared nothing for her sons´ feelings, only for her own satisfaction in taking her revenge. She served it hot, definitely not cold.

Except for his initial emotional outburst, Mark Sanford has kept silent--and Jenny Sanford should have followed his example.

A and I will be voting for Mark Sanford.

The Growing Financial Disaster of Obamacare

President Obama asserts that 8 million people have signed up for Obamacare, as though that were something to be proud of. In fact, Obamacare has always been a fiasco from a fiscal perspective–a black hole of subsidies and expanded Medicaid, with largely fictitious mechanisms in place to pay for it. As the number of subsidized participants grows, the disaster gets worse. Charles Blahous explains: Our national discussion…is missing the truly significant story here; what is unfolding before our eyes is a colossal fiscal disaster, poised to haunt legislators and taxpayers for decades to come. It is quite possible that the ACA is

“Am I going to be an outcast?” A friend, who recently moved to an upscale neighborhood in Madison, Wis., called me last week to ask if she would be able to make mommy friends if she continued feeding her children — gasp! — non-organic food. She had just come back from the park where two mothers were discussing a recent vacation to a resort in Puerto Rico. One told the other that there, for the first time, her toddler was given Jif peanut butter. He loved it. Prior to that he had only had Whole Foods peanut butter, which (one might

In a speech earlier this week, Lisa O. Monaco, President Barack Obama’s assistant for homeland security and counterterrorism, insisted that American parents must be vigilant because their “confrontational” children could be on the verge of becoming terrorists. Monaco’s full, prepared text is available here. She presented the speech, entitled “Countering Violent Extremism and the Power of Community,” at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government on April 15. Monaco began her remarks by eloquently describing the lives tragically lost last year during the Boston Marathon bombings. Interestingly, the Harvard grad failed to mention the religion or the motive of brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan

Reflecting on Kelo nine years later

It’s been nine years since the Supreme Court, expressing their decision in the writings of John Paul Stevens, decided to fundamentally change the Takings Clause of the constitution in the case of Kelo v. City of New London. On this auspicious anniversary, a diarist at Redstate decides to take a fresh look at how wonderfully that exercise in freedom worked out for the citizens, and what they received in exchange for their liberties. The Kelo ruling was controversial and precedent-setting because, under eminent domain, the government may seize the property of a private citizen when it’s deemed necessary for public use

MONROEVILLE, Pa.—When the Texas Wesleyan Rams arrived here this month to defend their 10 straight national titles, the 14 players and coaches wore navy blue and gold track suits and carried matching bags. The walkie-talkies worn on the hips of tournament personnel crackled to life: "Texas Wesleyan has entered the building." The opposing teams,?most of whom brought only a handful of players, some in a mishmash of college sweatshirts,?stopped to watch in awe and dread. "We are the New York Yankees of table tennis," said Texas Wesleyan University Coach Jasna Rather. "Everybody hates our guts."

On upcoming trip, Obama

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will leave Tuesday for a four-nation trip to Asia, looking to recharge a focus on the region, an ambitious initiative that’s been sidetracked by domestic politics and international conflicts elsewhere. Yet even as Obama attempts to boost his effort to emphasize U.S. interest in Asia, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s intervention in Ukraine is complicating efforts to reassure Asian nations _ which share the region with an increasingly assertive China - that the U.S. is committed to their security. The administration’s efforts to refocus U.S. policy toward Asia were already being questioned in the region with the

After presenting at the Academy Awards this year, Kim Novak didn’t want to leave her house. The Hitchcock screen siren, 81, was too humiliated to venture from her home near the Rogue River in Oregon. She read the cruel posts and Internet snark about her appearance, and it was just too much. “It got to me like it gets kids and teenagers,” she told the Associated Press. The “Vertigo” actress, considered one of the great beauties in her day, posted a note on her Facebook wall Thursday, acknowledging that she’d gotten fat injections in her face and addressing her halted

It’s the stuff of Westerns: a showdown on the desert plains, the big bad government against an underdog farmer. Though the story has only grabbed national headlines in the past several days, rancher Cliven Bundy has illegally grazed cattle on the Nevada land surrounding his farm for over 20 years. He hasn’t paid grazing fees since 1993, and refuses to renew the necessary grazing permit.(Snip)Rather than using the avenues and pathways presented to him, Bundy has staunchly declared his own law and allegiances. Unfortunately, reality doesn’t work this way. If only it did—we could rebel for paying stupid taxes, refuse to

The White House is going to war with another fox — and this time, it’s personal. The Wall Street Journal reports that a red fox has been causing chaos around the White House, tripping security alarms, digging up Michelle’s garden and distracting the president from his duties. The Secret Service won’t give any details about how often the fox trips the White House’s obviously sophisticated security alarms, but rest assured, officials say, they’re watching. President Obama was apparently “stunned” to see the fox roaming freely down the oft-photographed White House colonnade, home to the world’s shortest, but most dramatic, outdoor strolls. A group of seven multiracial Washington and Lee University (W&L) students are demanding the school remove all Confederate flags from campus and "acknowledge" General Robert E. Lee´s "dishonorable side." According to the Roanoke Times, "seven multiracial students, calling themselves ´The Committee,´" have also demanded the school "acknowledge and apologize for participating in chattel slavery." They want recognition of "Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus" and an end to "neo-Confederates" marching across campus "to the Lee Chapel on Lee-Jackson Day." The students say they will "engage in civil disobedience" if their demands are not met by September 1st. They added: "The

GREENSBORO, Ga. — Golf holes the size of pizzas. Soccer balls on the back nine. A mulligan on every hole. These are some of the measures — some would say gimmicks — that golf courses across the country have experimented with to stop people from quitting the game. Golf has always reveled in its standards and rich tradition. But increasingly a victim of its own image and hidebound ways, golf has lost five million players in the last decade, according to the National Golf Foundation, with 20 percent of the existing 25 million golfers apt to quit in the next few years. People under 35 have especially spurned the game, saying it takes too

Hi, everybody. For millions of Americans, this time of year holds great meaning. Earlier this week, we hosted a Passover Seder at the White House, and joined Jewish families around the world in their re-tellings of the story of the Exodus and the victory of faith over oppression. And this Sunday, Michelle, Malia, Sasha, and I will join our fellow Christians around the world in celebrating the Resurrection of Christ, the salvation he offered the world, and the hope that comes with the Easter season. These holy days have their roots in miracles that took place long ago. And yet, they still inspire us, guide us, and strengthen us today. They remind us of our
