The White House has identified 19 executive actions for President Barack Obama to move unilaterally on gun control, Vice President Joe Biden told a group of House Democrats on Monday, the administration’s first definitive statements about its response to last month’s mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Later this week, Obama will formally announce his proposals to reduce gun violence, which are expected to include renewal of the assault weapons ban, universal background checks and prohibition of high-capacity magazine clips. But Biden,
fta: “It was all focusing on enforcing existing law, administering things like improving the background database, things like that that do not involve a change in the law but enforcing and making sure that the present law is administered as well as possible,” said Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Va.).
So long as the executive orders only enforce existing law, then they really can´t be challenged. But how many people really expect the orders won´t stretch or break existing laws -- or more likely create laws where there were none before?
The worst part is, that it really won´t matter to the next bunch of innocent people trapped in a gun-free zone with some nutcase who ignores laws anyway.
As I have understood the process for quite awhile, please let me elaborate. To make a new law a bill has to be introduced in the House first and voted on by a majority of the representatives. Then it proceeds to the Senate where an exactly similar worded bill must be passed by a majority of the Senate. It then proceeds to the president who either agrees and signs it or disagrees and vetos it. If that is in the affirmative then we have a genuine new law. An executive order does not follow this process so it is not a directive that I intend to follow.
#6 has the money quote. All this talk of impeachment over executive orders is so over-the-top. The president has every right to issue executive orders to tell the Justice Dept. to enforce existing laws, or the CDC to gather statistics. And the Republicans who screamed "Impeach! Executive order! Impeach" will look stupid.
If he puts forth an executive order that violates the Constitution...then you impeach. But screaming when no harm has been done only calls attention to the screamer.
IMHO, this is all theater for the one objective that will lead to confiscation in the future. The Dems know they can not pass anything so they will push for the REASONABLE requirement for universal background checks, which is the precursor for a NATIONAL DATABASE. Then they can come and get them.
Don´t believe for a second that these actions are anything but a smokescreen for some other Obama sneak attack! If he can do them that´s just icing on the Obama cake! In the meantime Benghazi is dying down, there is no furor over the real cost of Obamacare and no public outcry over the clowns he´s nominating for his cabinet! Joe Biden has got to be furious that he has to keep doing the presidents job while Barack spends his time on the golf course or on a basketball court.
Obama is pushing hard to incite violence. It is what he wants and who he is. He knows once things turn violent, he can bring the full force and weight of the government down on the perpetrators. Otherwise why would he be so confrontational? He could have had an reasonable conversation with the American people on the subject of gun violence, but he wanted to stir the pot. Things are going just as he planned. He needs us divided and at each others throats to further his agenda. It is a simple strategy, divide and conquer.
One has to wonder, considering the socialist agenda, if the DC commies won´t move against and ban private property, if they succeed in a gun grab. It´s supposedly a part of Agenda 21. With all the money we owe China, bamster could carve up the whole US and give it to them through the UN for compensation. Foreclosure is foreclosure.
Number 16 may be correct. The president is either knowingly or miserably inept, and may incite violence. Makes one think of Iran who believes their savior will only come to conquor the world for their religion after catastrophic destruction. And they think they are bringing it about by their actions.
If the information in this article is correct, then all the actions cited here will do absolutely nothing to stop or deminish mass violence and school shootings. How many criminals and mentality deranged people have been denied a gun over the past 30 or 40 yrs? I´d bet a bent nickel that that number is VERY small. The overwhelming owners of firearms are peaceful, law abiding citizens. And all they want is to be left alone to live their lives as THEY choose to do.
I have to agree that the long term goal here is to overturn the 2nd Amendment in any way they can. The reason is simple. An armned citizenry is impossible to defeat. You must first disarm the citizens to be able to take over a country. Re-read the history of the communist takeover of Russia. Their way of disarming the citizens was to round them up and shoot them. Mass murder. I really don´t think that will happen here because I don´t believe our military will fire on it´s own people. But in any case, we must constantly be on alert.
Obama may view himself as supreme, but this is a Republic and states rule over the federal gov. The Constitution cannot be changed except as the majority of states vote to do so. THAT´S not going to happen. We must not let ourselves be pressured into giving up any right by something as tenuous as Executive Orders which cannot change anything fundamental. Cling to your Bibles, guns and state constitutions and stand your ground! And God bless America!
When a president attempts to defeat the checks and balances of the other branches of government, by trying to use executive orders, he is nothing more than a wannabe dictator! I don´t think most democrats would want that. The far, wacky, left is OK with it, until a Republican gets the White House...
I am repeating myself only because I know that the Dems cannot pass anything through the congress. For that reason they will put forth REASONABLE ideas like UNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHECKS, embedded in this will be provision for a NATIONAL DATABASE. After the dust settles another tragedy will happen in another GUN FREE ZONE, after which the Dems will enact more REASONABLE rules eliminating guns from CERTAIN households, then the NATIONAL DATABASE will be used to pick up the guns from certain people, a list which will expand quickly, till they have enough that the population is DISARMED.
If I hear any politician or media hack say,"high-capacity clip","magazine clip" or "gun clip" one more time, my head is going to explode! They are called "magazines". A clip is something a little girl puts in her hair. How can one try to ban something that doesn´t exist? The ignorant MSM is so oblivious to this because they don´t use or know a dang thing about those scary guns. Pathetic.
Major U.S. cellphone providers received more than $20 million from law enforcement agencies in conjunction with more than 1.1. million user information requests in 2012, according to documents released Monday by Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass. Five of the seven companies queried offered precise or ballpark figures for the revenue they received from law enforcement in 2012. AT&T said it received $10,298,000, T-Mobile USA said approximately $11 million, Verizon Wireless said less than $5 million, U.S. Cellular said $241,000 and C Spire said $55,000.
NEW DELHI— The Dalai Lama will not attend memorial services for fellow Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nelson Mandela in South Africa, where the Buddhist spiritual leader has twice been unable to obtain a visa, a spokesman said Monday. Tenzin Takhla gave no specific reason for the Dalai Lama missing the memorial service in Johannesburg and funeral in Mandela´s hometown, saying only that "logistically it´s impossible at this time." The Dalai Lama — based in the Indian hill town of Dharamsala since he fled China in 1959 — was welcomed to South Africa in 1996 and met with Mandela when he was South
Newspaper editors typically operate behind the scenes, overseeing reporters inside the newsroom and outside the spotlight. But since Ricardo Baca was named the marijuana editor of The Denver Post last month, he has been celebrated across the globe. He has appeared on CNN and “The Colbert Report.” Long-lost high school acquaintances have surfaced, with one inviting him to his friend’s basement for a smoke. Emails have flooded in from freelancers and readers, offering up their expertise on the subject matter. “We’re taking an extremely credible, professional approach to this,” Mr. Baca said. “I was surprised that it was such an immediate punch
There has been much ado about MSNBC anchor Martin Bashir´s contemptible attack on Sarah Palin, which has now resulted in Bashir resigning from the left wing network. But to those of us who write from the right his remarks are anything but unique. Despicable remarks are hurled at us all the time and the only difference about the Bashir flap is that ours usually come anonymously via email or snail mail. In my experience, the most hateful responses I´ve ever received are for columns addressing either gay rights or radical Islam. In 2007, I wrote a column for the New York
4 Things the MSM Won’t Tell You About Obama’s Inequality Speech: Now that the excitement has died down You have to admire President Obama for choosing to give a speech declaring that the fight against “growing inequality”–specifically economic inequality–is “the defining challenge of our time” and the “focus” of “all our efforts”–given that: a. Five years into his presidency he so far hasn’t done anything to stop growing income inequality–the problem has gotten worse on his watch. b. He doesn’t have any proposals (“It’s time to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act”) that come close to solving the problem as he defines it.
I’ve never been flogged in the public square, but now I have a rough idea what it’s like. On Thursday, Harvey Weinstein, the US distributor of the Judi Dench-Steve Coogan film “Philomena,” placed a full-page, color attack ad in The New York Times that screamed my name in blood-red letters. “The New York Times, Los Angeles Times and USA Today ALL PRAISE ‘PHILOMENA’ WITH A 92 % CERTIFIED FRESH SCORE ON Rotten Tomatoes,” read the ad. “BUT THE NEW YORK POST’S KYLE SMITH HAS A DIFFERENT OPINION. ‘ANOTHER HATEFUL ATTACK ON CATHOLICS.’ ” The ad (now brightening the wall over
Dayna Morales, the server who claimed last month to have been left a note about her “lifestyle” instead of a tip, was fired from her restaurant Sunday, and is reportedly returning the donations she received in the outpouring of sympathy after her story went viral. Morales, an openly-gay server at Gallop Asian Bistro in Bridgewater, NJ became a cause celebre after she posted a receipt informing her she had not been tipped because of her lifestyle. But her story began to unravel when the couple who left the receipt disputed Morales’ story, and provided bank statements showing they had in fact tipped
On his way to the podium at the memorial ceremony for former South African president Nelson Mandela, President Obama walked down the line of dignitaries, greeting other leaders there to pay their respects. Among the hands shaken: that of Cuban leader Raul Castro. Obama neither made a special effort to shake Castro’s hand nor to avoid him. A snub might have been awkward: In his speech, Obama praised Mandela’s “greatest gift” as “his recognition that we are all bound together in ways that can be invisible to the eye; that there is a oneness to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by
The Obama State Department has finally released a second round of photos revealing the harrowing devastation wrought by a terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012. The new photographs depict rampant damage to the consulate. They show charred walls, smoldering fires, Arabic graffiti defacing exterior walls, and scattered debris throughout. The extent of the damage would lead any reasonably serious person to conclude that this was a cold, calculated attack, carefully coordinated to mark the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. Unfortunately for the American people, the Obama-Clinton-Rice cabal that led to the Benghazi cover-up was
A black fashion student says he was brutally attacked by a gang of Hasidic men who shouted anti-gay slurs at him while he was walking through Williamsburg after a night of partying, the Daily News has learned. Taj Patterson, 22, was headed home to Fort Greene around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 1 when he says more than a dozen ultra-Orthodox Jewish men began assaulting him on Flushing Ave. and yelling, “Stay down, f----t!”
A “presidential selfie” featuring President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service began making the rounds this morning, but it’s the person not included in the frame who caught everyone’s attention: As anyone with two eyes and a Twitter account has noticed, Michelle Obama does not appear amused. Of course, though a picture says a thousand words, not all of those words are necessarily true. FLOTUS might not have even known the photo was taking place. Or she could disapprove of funeral selfies. Either way.
Just how much do many Hollywood liberals hate conservatives? In an interview with Playboy, Ben Affleck said, "When I watch a guy [on film] I know is a big Republican, part of me thinks, I probably wouldn’t like this person if I met him": PLAYBOY: You developed a political profile campaigning for presidential candidates Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama. How did that come about? AFFLECK: I grew up in a house with a mother who was a teacher and a Freedom Rider—very left-wing Democrats living in a heterogeneous working-class neighborhood. I picked up a lot of those values there, and I
MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry opened her program over the weekend with a commentary about the Affordable Care Act’s colloquial moniker: “Obamacare.” She said that the word was originally created as a “derogatory term,” designed by white men as a way to delegitimize President Barack Obama and his achievement. However, she said that the term will soon be synonymous with all of Obama’s accomplishments and she urged her audience to use the term with pride. “I want to talk today about a controversial word. It’s a word that has been with us for years, and like it or not, it’s indelibly
Barack Obama has arrived in South Africa to lead the American delegation at a memorial service for former South African President Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg.
