| Chuck Hagel, the former Republican senator from Nebraska and Barack Obama´s choice to be secretary of defense, served with honor as an infantryman in Vietnam and was wounded twice. This fact, a tribute to Mr. Hagel´s personal courage, will now be trotted out repeatedly as proof of his fitness to serve in high office. If the standard by which our prospective secretaries of defense should be judged is prior military service, neither Edwin Stanton (Lincoln´s secretary of war) nor Henry Stimson (FDR´s) would have passed the test. Robert McNamara and Don Rumsfeld would have. But I digress.

That´s what I have against Hagel, not this or that policy but that he´s a blithering fool, he seems almost the last guy in Washington you´d ever want as Secretary of Defense.
But then Hillary *was* the last guy in Washington you´d put in charge of the State Department. Except for Lurch.
Way to go, Mister President.

This is a puzzler. I think Hagel is mostly right on about homosexual diplomats and abortions. But is he also a nut? That Obama would nominate him makes perfect, cynical sense: we need a Republican to protect us, but of course he´s a nut, and probably in favor of dismantling Defense. So cynical, and maybe you can get the R´s fighting among themselves.
That the Journal is taking this shot is itself interesting. Wish they´d investigate Pat Leahy´s quirks as thoroughly.

Last Thursday, Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA) started a Twitter prairie fire with his call for people to describe #ObamacareInThreeWords. (My contribution was “Sorry, Doctor retired.”) (Snip) The White House, never shy to jump into social media, responded with a flurry of tweets, including “It’s. The. I first saw the headline early Tuesday on Real Clear Politics, a political news site where I generally start my morning. It´s not where I expect to see a story on breast cancer. Then I checked my e-mail messages -- they all seemed to be about Angelina Jolie´s op-ed. Students in my undergraduate class wanted to discuss it in our next session. Colleagues expressed concern and wondered what the right response was. People I don´t even know sent e-mails. Just when you think the news surrounding Obamagate cannot get any worse, it does. Some say U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s days on the job are numbered and that it’s just a matter of when he’ll be forced to resign. While I’ll not shed a tear over Holder’s departure, one of the replacement names being floated has me reaching for tissues: Gov. Deval Patrick. Patrick has denied he’s interested — but the job isn’t on offer yet. If it is, President Obama should not select him nor should he be confirmed by the Senate for a plethora of reasons.

The invaluable Andrew McCarthy reminds us that Obama and Secretary Clinton had a 10:00 p.m. phone call of which many (including, I think, Chris Wallace) have lost sight. WASHINGTON - There were new questions Saturday night concerning if anyone in the White House was aware of the IRS´ targeting of conservative groups. Inspector General Russell George said he informed a deputy at the Treasury Department in June of 2012 about the probe into the IRS. The Treasury Department confirmed the timeline but said they did not know the details of the investigation until last week.(Snip)Marcus Owens ran the tax-exempt division at the IRS for 10 years. He said it isn´t difficult to figure out who´s doing what at the agency.

It began in earnest last Friday. A flash mob of latte drinking, tofu eating media that has done its best to quell, rather than fan the flames of truth, turned on one of their own. Jay Carney lay bludgeoned at the base of the podium, a victim of friendly fire. Ironically, the attack was reminiscent of the one in Benghazi he has repeatedly denied the Administration he represents bears any responsibility for. “Changed twelve times?!” came the cries. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." Lew said that while President Obama is willing to discuss plans to reduce the nation´s deficit with Congress, those talks must be kept separate from any effort to raise the nation´s debt cap.

The Washington Post on Monday reported that Obama’s Department of Justice was investigating journalists before they started wiretapping the Associated Press – for one, Fox News correspondent James Rosen in 2010. Their headline wasn´t "Obama Team Also Spied on Fox News." Fox wasn´t in the headline, on A-1 or on A-12, where the story continued. Newly obtained court documents “reveal how deeply investigators explored the private communications of a working journalist — and raise the question of how often journalists have been investigated as closely as Rosen was in 2010.” Reporter Ann Marimow began:
