| Scientists have discovered exactly how a common diabetes drug works, raising hopes for powerful new treatments without harmful side effects.[Snip] The drug, which costs as little as 2p a day, is the gold standard treatment for obesity-triggered Type 2 diabetes and has been safely used for more than 50 years to control blood sugar levels. Yet one in 10 patients suffers side effects--nausea, loss of appetite and vomiting--and it can also become ineffective over time. Now experts at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine have found that metformin works in a different way than previously thought.

As bad as GB´s healthcare system is,they could probably find a cure for something and not be able to figure out how to get it to a patient..

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has delivered some harsh criticisms to President Barack Obama over recent controversies surrounding his administration in a speech. [Snip] CNN says Jindal addressed the IRS’ extra scrutiny of conservative groups applying for tax-exempt status, saying those involved in the targeting should ´go to jail´. ´Anyone who participated in this targeting of Americans for their political beliefs, anyone who knew about it, anyone who simply looked the other way, and anyone under whose watch this occurred needs to be fired,´ Jindal said, noting that ordinary citizens who fail to pay taxes could face jail time.

Citing defense ministry sources in Seoul, Yonhap said the missiles had crashed into the Sea of Japan, off the eastern coast of the Korean peninsula. Two rockets were launched this morning while a third was launched in the afternoon, Yonhap said. Early South Korean media reports suggested “shore-based anti-ship” missiles had been fired. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." Lew said that while President Obama is willing to discuss plans to reduce the nation´s deficit with Congress, those talks must be kept separate from any effort to raise the nation´s debt cap.

The lawmaker leading the charge to investigate the Benghazi terror attack on Friday subpoenaed the co-author of a report that slammed the State Department but didn´t interview Hillary Clinton. House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) formally demanded that retired ambassador Thomas Pickering submit to being deposed by the committee next Thursday. The subpoena comes in the wake of a series of acrimonious public exchanges this week between the two men. Issa didn´t issue a subpoena to former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Michael Mullen, who co-authored the Benghazi report with Pickering.

A healthcare provider has sued the Internal Revenue Service and 15 of its agents, charging they wrongfully seized 60 million medical records from 10 million Americans. The name of the provider is not yet known, United Press International said. But Courthouse News Service said the suit claims the agency violated the Fourth Amendment in 2011, when agents executed a search warrant for financial data on one employee – and that led to the seizure of information on 10 million, including state judges. The search warrant did not specify that the IRS could take medical information, UPI said.
