For much of the year, they are bitterly cold and wind-swept, with only open sea and ice between them and Antarctica. I don´t remember Reagan tussling with Margaret Thatcher over the Falklands. If I remember it correctly, the US supported the British in maintaining control over the Falklands.

While the Argentines could probably round up enough make believe soldiers to sail back to the Falkland Islands, you can bet that they know that they would be facing modernized British Army and Marine units that have been extremely battle hardened over the last decade by serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. That experience would not be at all pretty for the Argentines. On top of that a couple of British nuclear attack submarines, which are the battleships of this modern era, would take out the entire Argentine navy.
Obviously the Argentines don´t want the Falkland Islanders to express their self determination by voting next March. The British should therefore keep a prudent weathers eye out in the Falkland Islands situation until that election takes place.

Is there a correlation with Argentina´s economic woes/dips and Falkland flair ups . . . like in take the attention off of the miserable economy and a dreadful government.

Tyrannical governments must give the populace someone or something to hate. They do this to keep the people from looking at their government too closely (think "Goldberg"*). After the debacle in 1982, the Argentine people saw through the smoke and mirrors facade of the junta and tossed them out on their ears. Things are bad and getting worse in Argentina and Kirchner needs something to take the heat off her, enter "Las Malvinas". As stated above, it she makes a military play, it will end much, much worse this time.

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria.
