The New York Times has finally discovered that fiscal cliffs aren’t the only thing that menace the modern nation-state. There’s a demographic cliff, too. A couple weeks ago, the Times’s Ross Douthat wrote a column about America’s bleak demographic future and suggested that the reason we aren’t having enough babies is that we’ve become a decadent society. Douthat’s column touched off something of a firestorm on the left as liberal writers flipped out over the ideas that (1) There aren’t enough babies; (2) More babies would be a good thing;
Having a child is an investment in the future, the future beyond your own life time. This requires a system of belief that values the future and sees your foregoing of some current pleasures as well worth it to build a family and a legacy. Our previous Christian world view supported this value system. Our present secular humanist world view does not.
The ´necessity´ of the two-income paradigm is a real family-formation damper. How we got there - and why we seem to be stuck there - is a topic deserving of a long public discussion. However, it seems to be more of an urban/Blue-State problem.
On the topic, if one is in a stable marriage and somehow thinks that having just two (or 2.1) children is all that the planet can handle - consider that so many folks are not in stable marriages - or too old to have kids safely. So you folks (including my three adult daughters), having three - or four - kids should be considered the new normal. And luckily here in Red State paradise that view seems to taking hold among the ´´affluent´´.
Liberals in the USA could care less about all the figures in the article. As they know that all they have to do is open up the US borders to the third world, and a multitude of young people and babies will appear to help transform America to a liberal utopia.
Adding to replies #1 and 2...Perhaps men won´t commit to relationships because women are too willing to give it away for nothing - no ring, no wedding, no commitment, no responsibility, no future. Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free is an old saying which is right on target today. I blame it on feminism. And I´m a woman, married 32 years. Got the ring, the wedding, the commitment, the responsibility and the future because I value myself enough to accept nothing less.
What gets me is the fact that we all scoffed at the campaign ad, Life of Julia. Little did we realize that such a huge voter base existed. You want a dog whistle to your potential voters? This was barely heard by conservative humans, but too late to reverse the effect.
When you have irresponsible men planting the seeds of irresponsibility into women who don´t want to take care of a 20 something Baby Daddy along with their Baby Babies, and are willing to let the gov´t. take care of them while they troll for the next breed stud, we got a problem. To say nothing of the fact that the gov´t rewards such behavior while dictating the foods we should ingest, the medical procedures we are allowed to obtain, the acceptable use of private property, and the proper locations we might celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus.
#12 OTOH, what educated woman would want to marry a primitive ape who thinks in milk cow terms?
And on and on it goes.
In my own life, I don´t see this as a problem. "Feminism" isn´t even on the radar in 2012. Both the 20-something males and females are perfectly willing to commit and most find someone.
I´m going to go closer to home. The economy. It´s not affordable to raise more than a couple kids who have a decent chance to grow up and not be part of the economic underclass. Not only do you and your wife have to get educated and established and pay off your student loans, at which point you´re getting pretty old, but you have to have enough $ for the kids to be raised properly to have a high chance of getting in the correct schools, and getting through grad school, etc.
I´m not being classist, but realistic. A service economy is not something you really want to pass down to the next gen. It wasn´t always that way. The next gen used to automatically do better than you.
PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii — About 2,500 people gathered at Pearl Harbor on Saturday to remember those killed in the 1941 Japanese attack that launched the U.S. into World War II. The crowd observed a moment of silence at 7:55 a.m., the minute the bombing began 72 years ago. A vintage World War II-era airplane — a 1944 North American SNJ-5B — flew overhead to break the silence. The Hawaii Air National Guard has used its fighter jets and helicopters to perform the flyover for many years, but federal budget cuts prevented it from participating this year. About 50 survivors returned
A New Jersey waitress who received thousands of dollars in gratuities after claiming she received an anti-gay note in lieu of a tip is reportedly issuing refunds to those who gave donations. Dayna Morales, a 22-year-old former Marine, claimed last month that a family of four who racked up a $93.55 bill at the Gallop Asian Bistro in Branchburg, N.J., left her no tip, only a note saying they couldn’t leave any extra cash for her service because they “do not agree with your lifestyle.” Morales quickly emailed the story to a gay advocacy website and later posted a photograph of the
As the White House launches a three-week public-relations blitz to try and sell ObamaCare to the American people, Rep. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) is inviting Barack Obama to bring his “road show” road show” to Arkansas to see the troubled healthcare law’s effect on the people of his state. “This week, President Obama announced a 23-day PR blitz to tout his signature program, ObamaCare. I’d like to invite the President to bring his ObamaCare roadshow to Arkansas, so he can see firsthand the devastating effects the law is having on Americans who live outside Washington DC.” Well played, Congressman, but don’t hold your
One definition of a pathological liar is someone who lies where the truth would serve just as well. When President Obama’s uncle, Onyango Obama, was arrested in 2011 for drunk driving, the truth — that Obama had stayed with his uncle years earlier for several weeks as a Harvard law student — would have served the president just fine. No potential Obama voter would have held it against him that an uncle he had stayed with two decades earlier was picked up for DUI. Yet the White House went with a lie, claiming that Obama had never met his uncle. Now that
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is sending out letters telling gun owners to turn over their rifles and shotguns — or else face the consequences. New York City’s ban on rifles and shotguns that hold more than five rounds is now being enforced, according to a letter the NYPD is sending out to targeted city gun owners. “It appears you are in possession of a rifle and/or Shotgun (listed below) that has an ammunition feeding device capable of holding more than five (5) rounds of ammunition. Rifles and shotguns capable of holding more than five (5) rounds of ammunition are
PEARL HARBOR, HAWAII – About 3,000 people are expected to gather at Pearl Harbor on Saturday to commemorate the anniversary of the 1941 Japanese attack that launched the U.S. into World War II. About 70 World War II veterans and survivors of the Dec. 7 bombing plan to attend the morning ceremony on the shore overlooking a memorial to the USS Arizona battleship that sank during the attack. The event will begin with a traditional Hawaiian blessing. There will be a moment of silence at 7:55 a.m., the minute the bombing began 72 years ago. A guided missile destroyer will pass by
Senior defense officials are defending the decision to have fighter jets escort St. Nick this year on the North American Air Defense Command’s Santa tracker website. The NORAD website each December posts videos of Santa Claus entering different countries and cities around the world. This year, some of the videos will show fighter planes escorting the sleigh, a decision that has drawn criticism from the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood and others. But a senior defense official traveling this week with Secretary Chuck Hagel as he visited Bahrain said the military escorts for Santa are necessary given “the proliferation of air defense
Last summer on his $100 million family tour of Africa, Barack Obama hoped for a priceless photo op with Nelson Mandela, the ailing freedom pioneer who went from prison cell to the presidency of South Africa. Mandela´s family suggested that wouldn’t happen. So, the Obamas did a photo op in Mandela´s former prison cell. Which Obama’s White House quickly tweeted upon word of the icon´s passing at 95. [Skip] But Obama was also caught staring at television coverage of Mandela’s passing, which became Obama’s Photo of the Day.
Hardly a week goes by without Hillary Clinton receiving another award. Last month she was named a “Global Champion” by the International Medical Corps, received the American Patriot Award at the National Defense University Foundation and the Hermandad Award from the Mexican American Leadership Initiative. [Snip] At this rate, if a bunch of elderly left-wing Swedes toss her the Nobel Peace Prize early on, the way they did to Obama, it will barely rate mention among all the other glittering trophies that have been bestowed on a woman whose only actual accomplishment was being married to a crooked governor with
Speaker John Boehner said his party should support gay Republican congressional candidates and urged his colleagues to “be a little more sensitive” when running against women. “Some of our members just aren’t as sensitive as they ought to be,” Boehner said. When asked if he thinks his party should support gay candidates, Boehner simply said: “I do.”
Denver - A baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex ceremony must serve gay couples despite his religious beliefs or face fines, a judge said Friday. The order from administrative law judge Robert N. Spencer said Masterpiece Cakeshop in suburban Denver discriminated against a couple "because of their sexual orientation by refusing to sell them a wedding cake for their same-sex marriage." The order says the cake-maker must "cease and desist from discriminating" against gay couples. Although the judge did not impose fines in this case, the business will face penalties if it continues to turn away gay
DAVID CORN: I saw a president who remains frustrated with the political-media culture that he has to work within, and that he´s looking to rally people, students here, and supporters, and people within the media. CHRIS MATTHEWS: But David Corn, you skeptic. He came to us today. He came amongst us. CORN: He´s trying to rally people behind this vision that he´s been promoting for a couple years. FINEMAN: By the way, he did it the end here, today, Chris, not by defending specifics, but by explaining why he´s in the game to begin with. And I don´t know about you, he´s
In February, the Bush family’s personal emails were hacked by Guccifer, a hacker who uncovered photographs of former President George H. W. Bush in a hospital bed and George W. Bush’s oil paintings in the process. It seems Guccifer has struck again, this time targeting former President Bill Clinton and the Clinton Library. The hacker has reportedly uncovered doodles of Clinton drawing on what were, at the time, classified documents. Among the doodles is apparently a picture of a penis. The document uncovered is a briefing of the strategic measures the United States could take prior Clinton’s decision to intervene in
The most curious thing of all about the November jobs report released on Friday was the huge drop in the unemployment rate — and the fact that the Labor Department chose not to disclose that the data going into that figure are under investigation for falsification. On Nov. 19, I broke the news in my column that the Census Bureau, which collects data that goes into the jobless rate on behalf of Labor, had caught one of its enumerators fabricating interviews in 2010. The culprit said back then (and to me during an interview) that he was told to do so by
