A 12-year-old girl who uses a wheelchair was left in tears after TSA agents detained her for nearly an hour at a Texas airport after saying they found traces of bomb residue on her hands, her mother claimed today. Shelbi Walser was travelling to Florida with her mother, Tammy Daniels, for treatment for her brittle bone disorder when she was stopped at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in Texas. A TSA agent swabbed Shelbi´s hands and she tested positive for explosives. But the wheelchair, which is likely to have transferred any substance to her hands as she pushed it

Sue the pants off these idiots on a power trip! I am so UP TO HERE with the PC-approah at our airports. Learn from the experts: Israel, & get over the fear of profiling, or the airlines will continue to suffer from not enough consumers!

Some people just need to calm down. She tested positive for something, so they have to check it out. I suspect it was the mother´s antics that got the child upset, not the TSA agents. If she had treated it as just another inconvenience, part of air travel in 2012 America, the girl could have just sat there calmly reading a book and waiting it out as the TSA did what they needed to do. This falls into the same category as those travelers who get furious and yell at the ticket agents when their flights are delayed because of the weather.

We are incrementally being taught to submit to government authority without question. When the time comes that we are ordered to board boxcars, we will submit without objection. The People no longer realize that the government is supposed to work for US. We are subjects of the government now.

re #3 -- the article & videos make it clear everyone was cooperating. The security officials at the bare minimum should have let her mother be with her. They should be sued for false arrest & kidnapping of a minor. Period.

I´m sure the girl was feeling some excitement about the trip. Then being taken away from her mother by authority figures had to have been stressful. I really question the separating of mother and daughter here. That may be unlawful.

Ya know, I could almost be with #3 up to a point--except for one thing: [note to self--do not yell!]: The Stupid Buffoons Didn´t Check The Wheelchair! And BTW, #3, exactly what "antics" are you talking about? And BTW 2nd--what did the bomb expert that they waited an hour for do? Some things just get under my skin--and TSA and the sheeplike acquiescence of the public at large is one of them. The TSA´s cookie-cutter mush mouth bureaucrat-ese responses to this kind of thing literally--that´s literally literally, not Joe Biden literally-- add insult to injury.

Is there IQ test for TSA personnel? Over 95 and you fail?

I am still waiting for the American people to revolt over the TSA tactics and the government who authorizes this Nazi-like behavior of the TSA agents. I am waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, .... Obviously the American people are sheeple not people.

Agree, #10. A child with a serious illness deserves at least some kindness.

#3, yes, just let the powers-that-be do whatever they want to you. Submit even to outrageous impositions on your privacy or freedom. Calm down, don´t make waves. Some day it will happen to you or yours, and you won´t be so sanguine.

My nephew works demolishing buidings, has handled all sorts of explosives right before getting on a plane, been swabbed down, and walked through the "detector."

#3--I couldn´t disagree more. If the mother got upset--she had every right to! It was her child! What did they expect? A little common sense was in order her. You call a supervisor, the supervisor see it´s a child, asks the mother a few questions (they can be trained to ask questions that detect true criminals) and let them go. TSA is out of control. I don´t even fly any more if I can avoid it.

Aren´t there basic rules in law enforcement about the treatment of detained minors? Aren´t they supposed to have a parent or guardian with them to prevent questionable actions by authorities? Several posters are correct about one thing; we are being behaviourally trained to accept without question whatever the gubmint wants to do with us.

The TSA is full of thugs who prey on the weak. My wheelchair bound Mother was detained, searched and humiliated because they found her Swiss Army knife in her pocket. She rightly told them it was for her own protection from terrorists. Because she would not give it up, they would not allow her to board her aircraft! She missed her flight and the airline would not refund the ticket price! My husband and I had to drive over 600 miles to take her home. TSA and the entire transportation system has been hijacked by communist liberals.

I got swabbed once at Dulles and the results were "borderline" suspicious. It was hand lotion and the TSA agent admitted that lotion frequently does that. Mass stupidity.

The child had brittle bone disease - if treated roughly she could have bones broken and her body harmed beyond repair. One of many reasons to avoid flying. From what I hear, flying anywhere has taken a big hit. Their employees should be fired and if they were so stupid as to think that that little girl was a danger, I wonder how they walk down a street with other people.

Reply 29 - Posted by: spit the bit, 12/14/2012 6:39:32 PM     (No. 9066161)

Most of today´s TSA agents were employed as security guards working for private firms at the airports they now staff. By the morning of September 13, 2001,they were federal employees with new uniforms and their pay nearly doubled from the minimum. All in thirty six hours. They later took oaths and were given badges.
Maybe that can begin to explain the agency´s ineptness.

I once made the mistake of having applied vanilla citrus shea butter hand creme prior to a TSA screening. They swabbed my hands and let me through. Luckily, I was not detained. A word to the wise!

It might seem like the androgynous fashion trend taken too far, but a Chinese company’s new ‘hairy leg’ hosiery hopes to help women ward off unwanted male attention. A photograph posted to the Shanghai-based website ChinaSMACK shows a model from the waist down wearing the on-trend stockings. A caption below touts them as the perfect ´summertime anti-pervert´ device and ´essential for young girls going out’. It does not state where shoppers can find the garment and internet searches prove fruitless. The image of the tights has triggered hundreds of responses from amused and horrified viewers. ‘Damn, so disgusting!’ commented one.

Nato has handed over security for the whole of Afghanistan for the first time since the Taliban were ousted in 2001. At a ceremony in Kabul, President Hamid Karzai said that from Wednesday "our own security and military forces will lead all the security activities". Observers say the best soldiers in the Afghan army are up to the task but there are lingering doubts about some. International troops will remain in Afghanistan until the end of 2014, providing military back-up when needed. The ceremony came shortly after a suicide bomb attack in western Kabul killed three employees of the Afghanistan

President Obama may be earning the favor of his Irish ancestors by attending the G8 conference with his family but it is stirring the ire of American taxpayers outraged by the cost of the trip. The two-day trip around the Republic is expected to cost U.S. taxpayers more than $5.2million. Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

Five months into his second term, allies and enemies are as confounded as ever about who President Obama really is. Is he the dyed-in-the-wool liberal that his biggest supporters and critics suggest? Or is he a pragmatic, even cynical, politician who cares more for his popularity than taking risks for his ideological goals or living up to his rhetoric? Even in the short period since his reelection, Obama has provided evidence to support conflicting interpretations. His efforts to pass immigration reform, the unsuccessful push for stricter gun controls and tax hikes on high earners buttress the case for Obama-as-ideologue.
