A 12-year-old girl who uses a wheelchair was left in tears after TSA agents detained her for nearly an hour at a Texas airport after saying they found traces of bomb residue on her hands, her mother claimed today. Shelbi Walser was travelling to Florida with her mother, Tammy Daniels, for treatment for her brittle bone disorder when she was stopped at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in Texas. A TSA agent swabbed Shelbi´s hands and she tested positive for explosives. But the wheelchair, which is likely to have transferred any substance to her hands as she pushed it
Sue the pants off these idiots on a power trip! I am so UP TO HERE with the PC-approah at our airports. Learn from the experts: Israel, & get over the fear of profiling, or the airlines will continue to suffer from not enough consumers!
Some people just need to calm down. She tested positive for something, so they have to check it out. I suspect it was the mother´s antics that got the child upset, not the TSA agents. If she had treated it as just another inconvenience, part of air travel in 2012 America, the girl could have just sat there calmly reading a book and waiting it out as the TSA did what they needed to do. This falls into the same category as those travelers who get furious and yell at the ticket agents when their flights are delayed because of the weather.
We are incrementally being taught to submit to government authority without question. When the time comes that we are ordered to board boxcars, we will submit without objection. The People no longer realize that the government is supposed to work for US. We are subjects of the government now.
re #3 -- the article & videos make it clear everyone was cooperating. The security officials at the bare minimum should have let her mother be with her. They should be sued for false arrest & kidnapping of a minor. Period.
I´m sure the girl was feeling some excitement about the trip. Then being taken away from her mother by authority figures had to have been stressful. I really question the separating of mother and daughter here. That may be unlawful.
Ya know, I could almost be with #3 up to a point--except for one thing: [note to self--do not yell!]: The Stupid Buffoons Didn´t Check The Wheelchair! And BTW, #3, exactly what "antics" are you talking about? And BTW 2nd--what did the bomb expert that they waited an hour for do? Some things just get under my skin--and TSA and the sheeplike acquiescence of the public at large is one of them. The TSA´s cookie-cutter mush mouth bureaucrat-ese responses to this kind of thing literally--that´s literally literally, not Joe Biden literally-- add insult to injury.
I am still waiting for the American people to revolt over the TSA tactics and the government who authorizes this Nazi-like behavior of the TSA agents. I am waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, .... Obviously the American people are sheeple not people.
Agree, #10. A child with a serious illness deserves at least some kindness.
#3, yes, just let the powers-that-be do whatever they want to you. Submit even to outrageous impositions on your privacy or freedom. Calm down, don´t make waves. Some day it will happen to you or yours, and you won´t be so sanguine.
#3--I couldn´t disagree more. If the mother got upset--she had every right to! It was her child! What did they expect? A little common sense was in order her. You call a supervisor, the supervisor see it´s a child, asks the mother a few questions (they can be trained to ask questions that detect true criminals) and let them go. TSA is out of control. I don´t even fly any more if I can avoid it.
Aren´t there basic rules in law enforcement about the treatment of detained minors? Aren´t they supposed to have a parent or guardian with them to prevent questionable actions by authorities? Several posters are correct about one thing; we are being behaviourally trained to accept without question whatever the gubmint wants to do with us.
The TSA is full of thugs who prey on the weak. My wheelchair bound Mother was detained, searched and humiliated because they found her Swiss Army knife in her pocket. She rightly told them it was for her own protection from terrorists. Because she would not give it up, they would not allow her to board her aircraft! She missed her flight and the airline would not refund the ticket price! My husband and I had to drive over 600 miles to take her home. TSA and the entire transportation system has been hijacked by communist liberals.
The child had brittle bone disease - if treated roughly she could have bones broken and her body harmed beyond repair. One of many reasons to avoid flying. From what I hear, flying anywhere has taken a big hit. Their employees should be fired and if they were so stupid as to think that that little girl was a danger, I wonder how they walk down a street with other people.
Most of today´s TSA agents were employed as security guards working for private firms at the airports they now staff. By the morning of September 13, 2001,they were federal employees with new uniforms and their pay nearly doubled from the minimum. All in thirty six hours. They later took oaths and were given badges. Maybe that can begin to explain the agency´s ineptness.
The Texas Legislature made a stab at pushing back against some of the most outrageous TSA treatment of travelers, but Joe Straus, whose grinning mug is on the sidebar ads here, thwarted the effort. Texas voters please ask your House Representative to vote against Straus in his bid to remain Speaker.
The U.S. Gross Domestic Product jumped by an annual rate of 3.6 percent in the third quarter of 2013, the U.S. Commerce Department said, surprising analysts who had forecasted a more modest 2.8 percent increase in the nation´s economic output. Commerce´s Bureau of Economic Affairs released its quarterly economic report on Thursday. Growth in the second quarter of the year was just 2.5 percent. That´s a dramatic improvement from the 0.12 percent growth during 2009, the first year of Barack Obama´s presidency. But it pales in comparison to the 7.71 percent average annual growth seen during the Reagan years.
The president and his supporters are pushing to get higher wages for American workers, but the nation´s largest pro-Obama organizing group is telling its footsoldiers not to expect a paycheck at all. Organizing For Action, which flexed its muscles as Obama For America during two presidential election campaigns, announced Wednesday that it´s seeking ´Spring Organizing Fellows´ to ´be a part of our growing organization´ and ´explor[e] OFA´s broad scope approach to issue advocacy.´ But unlike most fellowships, which offer a stipend or a housing allowance, the positions are strictly ´unpaid´ and require Americans to work ´without the expectation of pay,
An American chemistry teacher has been shot dead by gunmen in the Libyan city of Benghazi, security sources said on Thursday. The attackers shot a 33-year-old staff member of the Benghazi International School while he was out for a morning jog, sources said. He was originally from Texas. No one has claimed responsibility for the shooting. [Snip] The U.S. Department of State made no comment when contacted by MailOnline on Thursday. AFP reported that a 33-year-old man was shot dead in the central Al-Fwihet neighborhood of Benghazi. He was brought to Benghazi Medical Center where he was pronounced dead of
America´s National Security Agency is tracking mobile phones around the world, according to the latest leaks from whistleblower Edward Snowden. Almost five billion records a day are being gathered which allow intelligence officials to track individuals and map their relationships in ways previously unimaginable, the classified documents suggest. [Snip] The location data comes from tapping into cables connecting mobile phone networks around the world, it is said. Analysts are able to locate a mobile phone and then retrace the owner’s movements, exposing their connections to others, it is claimed. The NSA said that they do not intend to target the
The Home Secretary is to challenge her European counterparts to change the way free movement rules work across the region at a meeting in Brussels. Theresa May will tell justice and home affairs ministers of fellow European Union member states the UK is frustrated by the European Commission´s failure to tackle free movement abuse. Ahead of the meeting, Mrs May discussed measures to tackle this abuse such as applying a cap on numbers if European immigration reaches certain thresholds. Her comments come after David Cameron unveiled measures to deter immigrants from within the EU but also suggested in the future, labour movement
The US and China have had "very direct" talks about concerns over China´s new air defence identification zone, US Vice-President Joe Biden said. Speaking after meetings with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Mr Biden said the zone had caused "apprehension" in Asia. Talks in Mr Biden´s Asia trip have been dominated by a new air zone declared by China, which covers islands controlled by Japan in the East China Sea. China says its move is consistent with "international law and practice". China announced a new Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) last month, and said aircraft flying through the zone must follow
It is a story as heart-warming of one of their Christmas adverts. John Lewis has launched an appeal to find the five-year-old girl who wrote them a letter saying sorry for breaking a bauble. Known only as Faith, the girl sent a handwritten apology to her local store after she said she accidentally broke the decoration on a visit to the shop. Faith even attached two pound coins to the note, apologising for the damage she caused at the Cambridge branch of the department store. The letter arrived there after being posted to the ‘Christmas Department’ soon after her visit.
I have never been much of a conspiracy theorist. For me it was always Oswald by himself from the Texas School Book Depository and nothing in the intervening fifty years has disabused me of this notion. For the most part, I’m an Occam’s Razor kind of guy — the most obvious explanation is likely to be true. (Snip) To put it bluntly, Occam’s Razor has moved. Things that were once possibilities now seem almost certainties to me. Principal among those is that Obama’s academic records are perpetually unavailable for a reason — and that reason is most likely that they reveal
One of President Obama´s chief political assets has been his ability to excite young people like almost no politician in history. But the days of America´s youth fawning over the president are over. A new Harvard University Institute of Politics poll released Wednesday confirms what other surveys have shown in recent months: Millennials have soured on Obama so much this year that their opinion of him largely mirrors the American public´s. Even though Obama does not ever have to face another election, he should be worried about the findings for a couple of reasons, which we will dive into momentarily.
Good stuff from Jonathan Turley at today’s House hearing on executive power, although I regret that I couldn’t find a more user-friendly format for you to watch. There’s no compilation clip; you’ll have to make do with the C-SPAN embed by fast-forwarding to the time cues I give you and being patient while the vid buffers (and buffers, and buffers).(Snip)That brings us to point two: Even if Congress can’t stop Obama, the courts can. The problem there, though, says Turley, is that O and the DOJ have argued successfully in many cases that no one has standing to sue him
A stunning new study unveiled on Fox News´ Hannity finds that President Barack Obama’s White House calendar records just one face-to-face meeting between Obama and his Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in the more than three-and-a-half years leading up to the disastrous Obamacare launch. The startling statistic comes from a new Government Accountability Institute (GAI) analysis of Obama’s own official White House calendar, as well as the Politico presidential calendar, and raises new questions about Obama’s executive leadership and management throughout the implementation of his singular legislative achievement. More alarming still, the president’s schedule lists 277 private
[Video] President Obama on Wednesday declared that addressing income inequality would be the focus of “all” of the White House’s efforts “for the rest of my presidency.” In a sweeping address that touched on raising the minimum wage, investing in infrastructure and ending tax breaks for the wealthy, Obama warned that the American economy has become “profoundly unequal,” declaring economic mobility the “challenge of our time.” “The combined trends of increasing inequality and decreasing mobility pose a fundamental threat to the American dream, our way of life, and what we stand for around the globe,” he said in an hour-long
Just over two weeks ago, MSNBC host Martin Bashir delivered a harsh piece of commentary that culminated in the suggestion that someone should “s-h-i-t” in former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin‘s (R-AK) mouth. Bashir offered an abject apology on his next broadcast, but a chorus of critics continued to demand action against the host. After a reported “vacation” for the host earlier this week, Bashir announced, Wednesday afternoon, that MSNBC and Martin Bashir are parting ways. Here’s the statement from Martin Bashir, via email: After making an on-air apology, I asked for permission to take some additional time out around the Thanksgiving holiday. Upon
Nineteen people stood behind President Obama on stage in the Executive Office Building Tuesday as the president kicked off a new campaign to promote Obamacare. One of those people, a young Florida woman named Monica Weeks, introduced Obama after telling the story of being struck with Crohn´s Disease at age 19 and receiving expensive treatments for several years that were covered by her parents´ health care plan — because Obamacare allowed her to remain on that plan until age 26. Now, Weeks said, she has coverage through a job. "The Affordable Care Act gives young adults who are just starting
