| Remember when government needed something called a warrant or even probable cause to look at your records? Good times, good times. I’m nostalgic for the halcyon days of, er, February of this year, before the Attorney General of the United States signed off on an order allowing the government to access pretty much everything it wanted in the name of counterterrorism. One of the most outrageously awful stories since the election. I´d say I can´t believe it, but unfortunatley, I can, and I can now also believe the lack of public outrage on teh subject. :bleaksigh: I am so moving to Big Diomede Island.

BOSTON — A federal judge has ordered Homeland Security officials to release certain immigration records following a newspaper´s 2012 lawsuit. The Boston Globe was seeking names of "convicted criminal aliens" who were not deported after completing their sentences because their homelands wouldn´t take them back. A 2001 Supreme Court decision says people who are set for deportation can´t be detained more than six months when their removal isn´t likely in the near future. The government argued against the release of thousands of names, saying it would be a privacy invasion.
