GOP loses way on fiscal cliff
The Hill [Washington DC], by Steve Forbes

Original Article

In the war over the “fiscal cliff” of looming automatic spending cuts and increased tax rates, the GOP is reeling. Republicans are playing right into the Democrats’ hands, time and time again. Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) made the generous but misguided gesture last week of offering tax increases via eliminating or capping deductions, without demanding any sort of tax reform in return. Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) then exceeded the Speaker’s generosity on Sunday by acquiescing to higher tax rates, in the abstract hope that the White House would return the favor when it comes to entitlement reform.

Forbes has good advice here....if only the Repubs had the brains, the PR savvy, and the backbone to follow it.

Look at it this way. If the Republican establishment had the vision, political guts and inclination to see this through. We won´t have lost the general election under current economic circumstances.

The same people pulling the strings of the Obie puppet also have the strings of the GOP leadership puppet. Didn´t all these ivy league guys belong to the same fraternities?
Sold out since their beer drinking days, these cronies all took the same pledge.

Did any of the voters who elected the Republican Congressmen to the House vote for higher taxes? No. So these Representatives--Boner included--have a duty to hold the line on tax increases, whether through rate increases or eliminating deductions for "the wealthy."

And I´ll add one more item to Forbes´ list: the RNC should buy air time to get this message out to the voters. I also think Mitt should donate his leftover campaign funds for this effort. I heard he had $26 million left.

All right, fine, but fact of the matter is everything should be cut. Everything. It won´t be so we´ll all be slouching toward the disunited states of dystopia. Good luck.

Democrats seek to reshape midterm

presidential year

Democrats have a problem and everyone knows it. President Obama calls it a “congenital disease.” If they can’t control it, Obama could spend the final years of his presidency battling not only a Republican House but also a Republican Senate. Democrats don’t vote in midterm elections. That’s an exaggeration, of course, but the core of the Democratic coalition is made up of many people who turn out to vote only in presidential elections. The Republican coalition — older and whiter — suffers less from midterm falloff. So much has been made of the building blocks the president assembled to win his

Once the province of activists and stoners, the traditional pot holiday of April 20 has gone mainstream in the first state in the nation to legalize recreational marijuana. Tens of thousands gathered for a weekend of Colorado cannabis-themed festivals and entertainment, from a marijuana industry expo called the Cannabis Cup at a trade center north of downtown, to 4/20-themed concerts at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater — acts include Slightly Stoopid and Snoop Dog — to a massive festival in the shadow of the state capitol where clouds of cannabis smoke are expected to waft at 4:20 p.m. MDT Sunday.

Last night, Chris Hayes face off against Assemblywoman Michele Fiore over the ongoing saga of the Bundy Ranch. Fiore reminds us why we love TV. (Video) Fiore for the win! The Assemblywoman is feisty, unflappable, stays on message, goes at Hayes hard, and comes out looking great. A terrific segment and a good interview by Hayes, amazingly enough. The best part was when she left him flat-footed right at the end after catching him with the slaughter question. Although Hayes salvages the moment for himself with the barbecue crack. You can agree or disagree with Bundy or Fiore all you

IRS Among agencies that hired

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service and other federal agencies awarded about $415,000 in contracts to a license plate-tracking company before Homeland Security leaders dropped a plan for similar work amid privacy complaints. Federal offices such as the Forest Service and the U.S. Air Force´s Air Combat Command chose Livermore, Calif.-based Vigilant Solutions to provide access to license plate databases or tools used to collect plate information, according to government procurement records compiled by Bloomberg. Vigilant, a closely held company, has received such work since 2009. In February, Jeh Johnson, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security

WASHINGTON— A Western official says the United States is considering deploying about 150 soldiers for military exercises to begin in Poland and Estonia in the next few weeks. The exercises would follow Russia´s buildup of forces near its border with Ukraine and its annexation last month of Ukraine´s Crimean Peninsula. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said earlier this week that the U.S. is looking for ways to reassure its NATO allies of its strong commitment to collective defense. The Western official says ground exercises in Poland and Estonia would last about two weeks but that such exercises would continue on a

This week’s POLITICO Magazine contains an uncharacteristic show of gratitude from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) to President Barack Obama. Under the headline “A bipartisan message to Iran,” the senator thanks the president for signing his S 2195 bill into law, which prevents anyone who has engaged in espionage or terrorism against the U.S. from gaining entry to the country via the United Nations. “Thanks to President Obama for joining a unanimous Congress and signing S 2195 into law,” Cruz begins his piece. By giving the president “the authority to deny visas to United Nations ambassadors who are known terrorists,” he

After presenting at the Academy Awards this year, Kim Novak didn’t want to leave her house. The Hitchcock screen siren, 81, was too humiliated to venture from her home near the Rogue River in Oregon. She read the cruel posts and Internet snark about her appearance, and it was just too much. “It got to me like it gets kids and teenagers,” she told the Associated Press. The “Vertigo” actress, considered one of the great beauties in her day, posted a note on her Facebook wall Thursday, acknowledging that she’d gotten fat injections in her face and addressing her halted

The White House is going to war with another fox — and this time, it’s personal. The Wall Street Journal reports that a red fox has been causing chaos around the White House, tripping security alarms, digging up Michelle’s garden and distracting the president from his duties. The Secret Service won’t give any details about how often the fox trips the White House’s obviously sophisticated security alarms, but rest assured, officials say, they’re watching. President Obama was apparently “stunned” to see the fox roaming freely down the oft-photographed White House colonnade, home to the world’s shortest, but most dramatic, outdoor strolls. A group of seven multiracial Washington and Lee University (W&L) students are demanding the school remove all Confederate flags from campus and "acknowledge" General Robert E. Lee´s "dishonorable side." According to the Roanoke Times, "seven multiracial students, calling themselves ´The Committee,´" have also demanded the school "acknowledge and apologize for participating in chattel slavery." They want recognition of "Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus" and an end to "neo-Confederates" marching across campus "to the Lee Chapel on Lee-Jackson Day." The students say they will "engage in civil disobedience" if their demands are not met by September 1st. They added: "The

For Hillary Clinton, having her own baby grandchild to kiss on the campaign trail, could be one of the biggest boosts to her possible presidential election campaign. Although the former Secretary of State and First Lady has not said if she will run in 2016, the arrival of her first grandchild will soften her image, analysts have said. While Chelsea only revealed her pregnancy on Thursday, supporters of her mother have already started cooing over a possible baby in the White House. With the Clintons having a near-royal status in the U.S., the announcement of a new arrival due this fall has sent

GREENSBORO, Ga. — Golf holes the size of pizzas. Soccer balls on the back nine. A mulligan on every hole. These are some of the measures — some would say gimmicks — that golf courses across the country have experimented with to stop people from quitting the game. Golf has always reveled in its standards and rich tradition. But increasingly a victim of its own image and hidebound ways, golf has lost five million players in the last decade, according to the National Golf Foundation, with 20 percent of the existing 25 million golfers apt to quit in the next few years. People under 35 have especially spurned the game, saying it takes too

Hi, everybody. For millions of Americans, this time of year holds great meaning. Earlier this week, we hosted a Passover Seder at the White House, and joined Jewish families around the world in their re-tellings of the story of the Exodus and the victory of faith over oppression. And this Sunday, Michelle, Malia, Sasha, and I will join our fellow Christians around the world in celebrating the Resurrection of Christ, the salvation he offered the world, and the hope that comes with the Easter season. These holy days have their roots in miracles that took place long ago. And yet, they still inspire us, guide us, and strengthen us today. They remind us of our
