How is it that the GOP is so feckless and ineffective that it can´t even convince the 48% who voted for Romney that raising taxes on those making over $250,000 is both pointless and bad policy: Sixty percent of all Americans back higher taxes on higher incomes in the new Post-ABC data. Earlier this month, an identical 60 percent of voters in the presidential election said income taxes should be raised on income over $250,000, according to the national exit poll.
Comments: They lost this battle before it began. Give it up, GOP.
Heard on ´meet the press´ today (on radio, so do not know who it was) - if there is no deal, dems will let the Bush tax cuts expire, and then in January propose a new bill that reduces tax rates back on 98% of the population. So they will get what they want.
Several GOP members of both Houses have already indicated their willingness to raise taxes before a single dem raised the issue. Not only does this behavior show how stupid they are but it proves both Boehner and McConnell have no control over their membership.
With friends like the republicans who needs enemies.....
The polling of how people feel about increased taxing of the wealthy should be no mystery - First it was big oil, then big insurance companies, big, bad Wall Street - anything to divide the country along economic measures. Is it any wonder that after 5--6 years of this garbage that people dislike anyone or any thing that earns more than they do? One of the most essential revisions to our tax system has to be that ALL people pay Federal income taxes taxes - EVERYONE! With no skin in the game, almost half of the population couldn´t care less about any tax policy or amount.
The majority of the Republicans serving in the House now were elected two years ago based on pledges that they would not raise taxes.
They honored their pledges and most of them were re-elected last month based on the same pledge.
It should not matter to them what the 99% of poll respondents living outside their districts think about tax increases.
Next year, when Congress reconvenes, the Republicans in the House will propose a bill restoring the Bush tax cuts, and it will pass because Republicans will be in the majority. If Nancy Pelosi wants the Democrats to propose a bill that increases taxes on anyone it will not pass because the Democrats are in the minority.
Then, if Obama and the Democrats want to restore the middle-class tax cuts that went over the cliff with everything else, they will have to pass the House´s bill restoring all of the tax cuts. This should give the President something to think about while he´s golfing in Hawaii.
Really, the Dems would write a law extending Bush tax cuts for 98% of the people for just one year? And what are they going to do about the cuts in Sequestration? And what about all the new taxes Obama is proposing? I don´t think it will help them to show everyone just what is coming next year when the extension runs out. Their strategy is to get the GOP to cave.
Who cares what the silly polls say anyway...they are run by O, the Dumbs, and the Loonie Lame Stream News Media. Polls can be made to say what you want them to say...in statistics "figures lie and liars figure"!
The GOP couldn´t sell a glass of water to a man dying of thirst. Barry is completely incompetent in general, but he is excellent at picking fights and ridiculing his opponents. The GOP should curse him and his groupies by letting them to lead. This is what the stupid electorate deserves. Who is John Galt?
Tax rates is not really the main issue. What is riding under the radar is the complete unwillingness of the Illegal Kenyan Monkey to cut any entitlements. He has the Stupid Party exactly where he wants.
Interesting. I suspect that the same fraction of the electorate would have supported raising income taxes on incomes over $100,000. Or $75,000. Maybe $50,000 would begin to lower support. Message is that such persons will support raising taxes on anyone who earns more than they do, with the understanding that the taxes realized will be distributed among them. What a way to make tax policy!
I am 76 years old and all my life I have heard nothing but "the Republicans are for the rich and the democrats are for the common man". It´s that simple. America despises rich people and love the "unfortunate" poor folk that the rich stole from. Just that simple and it will never change.
I´m afraid it´s lose-lose for us. Before the election, Obama told an Iowa editor in his "off the record" interview that he expected us to go over the fiscal cliff. When we do, here´s what to expect: A January state of the union speech reiterating that it´s all the Republicans´ fault and a proposal for the largest tax cut ever for the 98%. He now becomes the tax-cutter in chief. Game. Set. Match.
We all understand the principle of not raising taxes on the 2% but the GOP lost control of the message from the start. There is no way to win this battle. Walk away, let it happen and try to figure a way to be smarter next time. As for the Democrats, be careful what you wish for comes to mind!
Call me an apostate (I doubt that´s what you´ll call me), but I don´t see why we couldn´t raise taxes on the top one percent. In our utter failure to explain this issue to the public, we´ve probably lost forever.
And the ´attitude´ of the poster above who says he´s top 1% is duly noted. I wonder if whatever he would do would be a matter of absolute financial necessity - or something else....
Not true #21, we don´t despise the wealthy. We either revere them (professional athletes, actors, singers, etc.) or we are jealous of them (royalty, businessmen, heiresses, etc.) At the end of the day, the liberals want to be those people, heck they are those people. Perhaps it is time to showcase the wealth that is sitting in Congress, the Supreme Court and the White House.
I read and generally like the Breitbart sites but I don´t understand their current obsession with these polls on who is winning the debate. The Dems own the media so of course the GOP will get the blame, they can have the best arguements but they will still lose. What matters is if they cave on the budget, not if a handful of people who are polled think the GOP are big meanies.
Any reasonable or effective rebuttal to the propaganda put out by the lamestream media will never see the light of day because it would defy the "conventional wisdom" of the media outlets controlled by themselves. We need Allen West to do a "susan rice Sunday show trip" and explain the true meaning of a "spending cut" at all of the morning talk shows.Washington cuts are really just a reduction in growth, rather than a true reduction in spending!
Hardly a week goes by without Hillary Clinton receiving another award. Last month she was named a “Global Champion” by the International Medical Corps, received the American Patriot Award at the National Defense University Foundation and the Hermandad Award from the Mexican American Leadership Initiative. [Snip] At this rate, if a bunch of elderly left-wing Swedes toss her the Nobel Peace Prize early on, the way they did to Obama, it will barely rate mention among all the other glittering trophies that have been bestowed on a woman whose only actual accomplishment was being married to a crooked governor with
In a weird confluence of the nation’s two most pressing issues — Obamacare and our insane immigration laws — this week we found out that the tens of thousands of “navigators” hired by the government to enroll people in Obamacare will include convicted felons. Despite some “navigators” having already been exposed as having arrest warrants against them, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has no plans to screen out the criminals. (But rest assured: If your identity is stolen as a result of trying to sign up for Obamacare, no one will be more upset about it than
A pair of college students in Washington state are facing disciplinary action, including possible expulsion, for using a handgun to prevent an intruder from entering their university-owned apartment. According to MyFoxSpokane.com, a discipline board at Gonzaga University in Spokane voted Friday to move forward with sanctions against Erik Fagan and Dan McIntosh. The men will learn what their future at the school will hold at a later date. Fagan and McIntosh were at the off-campus apartment on the night of October 24 when they heard a knock at the door. Fagan answered the door and found himself face-to-face with John
Twenty years ago, New York’s long nightmare ended with a Giuliani victory over Mayor Dinkins. Now the nightmare returns as former Dinkins staffer and terrorist supporter Bill de Blasio will begin wrecking the city where Dinkins and his Democratic predecessors left off. Bill de Blasio vowed to undo Giuliani’s reforms and turn back the clock on fighting crime and terrorism. Giuliani’s victory was a wake-up call to Democrats that one of the more dangerous cities in the country had rejected their liberal soft-on-crime policies that had made it unlivable. Bill de Blasio’s victory tells them that soft-on-crime is popular again.
It´s exactly what critics of the Common Core school curriculum warned about: Partisan political statements masquerading as English lessons finding their way into elementary school classrooms. Teaching materials aligned with the controversial national educational standards ask fifth-graders to edit such sentences as “(The president) makes sure the laws of the country are fair,” “The wants of an individual are less important than the well-being of the nation” and “the commands of government officials must be obeyed by all.” The sentences, which appear in worksheets published by New Jersey-based Pearson Education, are presented not only for their substance, but also to
When Stephen Hawking decided to boycott Israel earlier this year based on the opinions of academics like Noam Chomsky I was astonished. How can it be that one of the smartest people in the world can hold such a dumb view? It turns out that this is quite common. As I began to teach at Queens College (City University of New York), I have seen firsthand how this can be. It has often been said that there is no cure for stupid, while ignorance is easily treated through education. What happens when educators willfully steer their ships in an ignorant
Apparently bands now have to be the same race as the music they’re playing. That’s going to be a problem. So no more white rappers or black classical musicians are allowed. Finally we’re achieving Martin Luther King’s dream of a society firmly divided into segregated racial castes with everything in the cultural fridge labeled either “black” or “white”.Well someone’s dream anyway. Maybe Louis Farrakhan’s. Shokazoba’s cancellation from the Hampshire Halloween event Friday night at Hampshire College, after one band member said they were criticized of being “too white” to play Afrobeat music, is reverberating on social media.
New York — The anchor who might beat Bill O’Reilly gets her eyelash extensions applied one at a time, with tweezers and dabs of glue, about 90 minutes before showtime, right after a motorized gun sprays foundation over her face, neck, shoulders, collarbone and sternum, wiping out a galaxy of light freckles that spreads across her — Let me stop you right there. Photos of the day Uruguay legalizes marijuana, Kiev police pull back from protesters, aging U.S. prison population and more. Tuesday´s Photos of the day Would you write this way about a man? About O’Reilly himself? At least that’s what Megyn Kelly might ask at
When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what
US President Barack Obama may have moved the masses attending Nelson Mandela’s memorial service with his stirring eulogy, but it was his grinning "selfie" with the Danish and British premiers that set social networks abuzz. In a candid moment captured by a photographer, Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt can be seen holding up her smartphone, with Obama lending a helping hand, as they pose for a picture with David Cameron, all three of them smiling broadly in their seats at Soweto’s World Cup stadium.(Snip)Mashable, the news and technology website, ran the photograph under the headline: ‘‘Dear Obama: Funerals are no place
Johannesburg - A man who provided sign language interpretation on stage for Nelson Mandela´s memorial service, attended by scores of heads of state, was a "fake," the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa said on Tuesday. Asked about the claim by The Associated Press, South Africa´s government said it was preparing a statement. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country´s 11 official languages, according to the federation. It wasn´t immediately clear if the unidentified man was using a
In August 2013 I became very sick with what I thought was a cold. After a few days I lost vision in my left eye and I checked into the hospital. I soon found out that what I thought was a summer cold was actually Strep bacteria poisoning my blood stream. The bacteria blinded my left eye, ate a hole through my heart, caused five strokes on both sides of my brain and forced the removal of my prosthetic left knee. Dr. Lee was the surgeon assigned to perform open heart surgery. What was originally scheduled to last four hours ended
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) snapped at conservative groups that have come out in opposition to the budget deal reached Wednesday between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "They´re using the American people for their own purposes. This is ridiculous," Boehner said at a press conference with other members of House Republican leadership on Wednesday. Over the past few days, a number of conservative groups have blasted the deal because it sets discretionary spending levels in the budget higher than previous levels under sequestration. In the past three days, the influential Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Americans
President Obama’s job approval among American voters has dropped to negative territory with just 38 percent voicing their approval versus the 58 who says they disapprove, according to a national poll released Tuesday by the independent Quinnipiac University. That is one percent less than the 39% who said they approved of him in last month’s poll. The majority of the 2,692 registered voters the University in early December said that the president is not honest and trustworthy. When asked, “Do you approve or disapprove of the way Barack Obama is handling his job as President?,” respondents gave Obama lackluster ratings
