GOP’s rejection of higher tax
rates an obstacle to debt deal

Washington Post, by Paul Kane and David A. Fahrenthold

The new conciliatory tone among House Republican leaders this week will soon have to confront an old Washington reality: the GOP’s deep opposition to higher tax rates. As they begin bipartisan talks on a broad debt deal, White House and congressional leaders face a group of skeptical rank-and-file Republicans in the House who don’t view Tuesday’s Democratic victories as a reason to retreat on taxes. “The president may think that he’s got a mandate, but so do we. The president may have won a second term, but I won a third term,” Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) said Wednesday.

Good - burn it down now rather than burn it down with TRILLIONS of more debt and spending.

I would be OK with more taxes if there were actual spending cuts. I would say:"show me a budget with $3.2 trillion or less in spending and we'll raise taxes by $100 billion for the year. For every dollar we go over $3 trillion in actual spending we cut the next year's budget by a dollar. For every dollar we go under $3.2 trillion we can increase the next year's budget."

We have to get back to zero based budgeting and one or two year budgets. These budgets based on wishful thinking with projections going out 10 years are pure smoke and mirrors.

Well Dirty Harry just said that he is going to change the Senate rules so he can get away with anything. So that is what the Dims call reaching over the aisle in cooperation.

Here is what I want to see happen. The House stands tall and refuses to give into blackmail. Let's get it over with early. The House challenges every illegal move the president makes. Take every unconstitutional action to the Supreme Court. This isn't a Democracy, it is a Republic.

Why isn't the WaPo headline, "Dems insistence on higher taxes an obstacle to debt deal" ?

Why is the GOP always described In the negative? Just two years ago Dems said ending Bush tax rates would be harmful to economy. What changed in 24 months? Surely not the anemic economy. GOP has to insist on substance before agreeing. For ex, end ObamaCare so that Social Secuirty & Medicare survive.

To re-work a slogan -- "It's the stupid spending, stupid."

Outrageous spending increases that occurred in only the last 4 years are not an accepted new "baseline." Outrageous spending we somehow survived without making before Obama doesn't justify new taxes or higher rates.

Read my lips....

But just wait until you see what they do to our itemized deductions.

Obama and Reid are going to hold the country hostage until they get higher taxes. If there's a government shutdown guess who will get blamed for it.

Look at what happened in France The new guy promised new taxes on the rich. he gan dlowback and threats to leave the country now he's going to raise taxes on everybody. You can't fix stupid in Europe orhere.

I'm sure Jerry Brown is happy the illegal crowd gave him a tax increase but it'll cause more business to flee the state, lowering revenues instead but you'll never convince a leftist otherwise.

Even a moron like Bloomberg realizes raising taxes on the rich is a bad idea because they can afford to move to another state or country in the worst case.

Liberals used to love to quote the (apparently apocryphal) line from a Sinclair Lewis character “When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and waving a cross.” Wonder if they’re reflecting on that this week? We knew that early in the first term, the White House attempted to exclude a news agency from pool reports. Now come revelations that the Justice Department engaged in sweeping eavesdropping on AP journalists; that the IRS targeted conservative private citizens while favoring liberal ones; that the EPA charged fees to conservatives groups while waiving them for “green” activists;

MOORE, Okla. — Spotlights bore down on massive piles of shredded cinder block, insulation and metal as crews worked through the night lifting bricks and parts of collapsed walls where a monstrous tornado barreled through the Oklahoma City suburbs, demolishing an elementary school and reducing homes to piles of splintered wood. At least 51 people were killed, including at least 20 children, and those numbers were expected to climb, officials said Tuesday. The storm stripped leaves off trees and left scores of blocks in Moore barren and dark. Rescuers walked through neighborhoods where Monday´s powerful twister flattened home after home

Steve wrote this morning about a hearing being held this week by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, in which Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, will testify tomorrow. The subcommittee apparently is trying to highlight supposed tax avoidance on the part of American companies, as the Associated Press reports: Apple Inc. employs a group of affiliate companies located outside the United States to avoid paying billions of dollars in U.S. income taxes, a Senate investigation has found. The world’s most valuable company is holding overseas some $102 billion of its $145 billion in cash, and an Irish

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) asked Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate election integrity org True the Vote and its associated Tea Party group, King Street Patriots, immediately before the IRS and DOJ began targeting the group in June 2010. Rep. Jackson Lee sent a letter to Holder which alleged that True the Vote was intimidating voters and their election monitors were crossing the line in unspecified “instances” of voter intimidation. The letter went on to directly assert that the “alleged events” were factual and that the True the Vote effort was behind the crimes

Gunmaker Smith & Wesson tops the list of best businesses in bright blue Massachusetts — after not making the list at all last year — a new report in the Boston Globe found. The 161-year-old company, based in a state with some of the stricter gun control laws in the nation, tried to diversify its holdings by acquiring a security company in recent years, only to do an “about-face” by focusing on its product line, the newspaper said in its explanation of the Springfield firm’s top spot. “We went back to what we do best, which is handguns,”

Journalists, First Amendment watchdogs and government transparency advocates reacted with outrage Monday to the revelation that the Justice Department had investigated the newsgathering activities of a Fox News reporter as a potential crime in a probe of classified leaks. Critics said the government’s suggestion that James Rosen, Fox News’s chief Washington correspondent, was a “co-conspirator” for soliciting classified information threatened to criminalize press freedoms protected by the First Amendment. Others also suggested that the Justice Department’s claim in pursuing an alleged leak

Perhaps no other IRS official is more intimately associated with the tax agency´s growing scandal than Lois Lerner, director of the IRS’s Exempt Organizations Division. Since admitting the IRS harassed hundreds of conservative and Tea Party groups for over two years, Lerner has been criticized for a number of untruths—including the revelation that she apparently lied about planting a question at an American Bar Association conference where she first publicly acknowledged IRS misconduct. Still, Lerner has her defenders in the government and the media. Shortly after the scandal broke, The Daily Beast published an article headlined "IRS Scandal’s Central

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The Washington Post on Monday reported that Obama’s Department of Justice was investigating journalists before they started wiretapping the Associated Press – for one, Fox News correspondent James Rosen in 2010. Their headline wasn´t "Obama Team Also Spied on Fox News." Fox wasn´t in the headline, on A-1 or on A-12, where the story continued. Newly obtained court documents “reveal how deeply investigators explored the private communications of a working journalist — and raise the question of how often journalists have been investigated as closely as Rosen was in 2010.” Reporter Ann Marimow began:

A senior adviser to President Obama mounted a combative defense of the administration on Sunday, saying the controversies enveloping the White House were the result of Republican lawmakers’ trying to “drag Washington into a swamp of partisan fishing expeditions, trumped-up hearings and false allegations.”The remarks came from Dan Pfeiffer, a member of the president’s inner circle, as he appeared on all five major Sunday morning talk shows in an effort to move the administration past what commentators have described as a “hell week” of controversy and missteps.

WASHINGTON – White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer said Sunday Republicans owe Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, an apology for alleging she played a part in formulating the White House’s response to the attacks in Benghazi, Libya, last year that killed four Americans. Pfeiffer said on ABC’s “This Week” that the release of more than 100 pages of Benghazi emails and notes show “beyond a shadow of the doubt” that accusations she tried to change the narrative of what happened in the attacks was false. "And, frankly, I think that many of the Republicans
