A wireless company profiting from the so-called “Obama phone” giveaway program is run by a prominent Democratic donor whose wife has raised more than $1.5 million for the president since 2007. Last week a video of a President Barack Obama supporter in Ohio claiming to have received a free phone from the president—“[Obama] gave us a phone!”—went viral, prompting media outlets to investigate.(Snip) One of the major providers of the free cell phones—3.8 million subscribers as of late 2011—is Miami-based TracFone Wireless, a company whose president and CEO, Frederick “F.J.” Pollak, has donated at least $156,500

As it says in the article, TracFone is majority-owned by Carlos Slim, and this program debuted in 2008, while George W. Bush was president.

Credit as usual is not properly attributed; these are DubyaPhones, not Obamaphones.

I'm glum. N-o-o-o-o-body believes in coincidences any more.

[BTW, if I, as President Veritas, were providing "free" phones (laugh uproariously here for as long as necessary), I'd be sure to include some special voice-recognition circuitry. The first circuit would analyze the conversation for inanities. On reaching the programmed inanity threshold, the phone (using a two-piece, metal exterior case that is both durable and electrically-conductive) would emit a 1/10 second burst of sound at about 9KHZ and 120db. It would then use a Taser-based circuit to put a 50,000 volt potential across the two case halves. The second circuit would be programmed to recognize the phrase, "and then she goes...." On recognizing those words, spoken in sequence, a small shaped charge with the explosive gas-jet discharging from the earpiece would be detonated. Yes, some mess is involved, but no plan is perfect. Besides, though both are vast beyond practical comprehension, both the surface of the earth and the electromagnetic spectrum are in fact limited. We must be good stewards.]

The original intent of this now-massive tax payer ripoff was to get 911 responders to entitlement class (people who don't have landlines, because they don't pay their bills.)

Problem is cell phones don't send your physical address to a 911 responder, as does a land line. So, the cell phones just "free stuff", trinkets for obama voters. And also, I have heard that disconnected landlines still dial 911. Is that true?? Anybody know?

I love TracFone. They made a clerical error in the tune of about $1700 in my favor. Now that I know that I'm taking from a Obama supporter makes it even better.

Is there nothing we can do to change the way these guys do business?

Thanx #3, for clarifying that it is ALL Bush's fault.

#10, it goes to show that Republicans never get credit for these things from the recipients, only blame. Plus (well deserved) rancor from the right.

Kennedy/Bush "No Child Left Behind?" Bad things about it are Bush's fault. Budget-busting Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit? No credit to W, unlike the Dems' beloved Obamacare, which is rightly saddled with the usurper's name.

#10, It started out only as a 9-1-1- phone, but the poor little "I needs" said that it wasn't fair they could talk to their homies. Now they have virtually unlimited talk, text and data courtesy of those of us who DO pay our bills and taxes.

By law, you can call 911 free from a cell phone. You do not need minues.

Reply 14 - Posted by: ladydawgfan, 10/9/2012 12:39:12 AM     (No. 8919426)

You can also call 911 from a disconnected landline. We had our landline disconnected several years ago purposely since all of us had cells that we pay for ourselves, I might add. That said, we still have a dial tone to get an outside line in an emergency and were told that it was only good for emergency calls and could not be used for any other purpose.

U.S. and Israeli defence chiefs on Friday reaffirmed cooperation to counter threats from Iran and condemned the alledged use of chemical weapons by Syrian government forces. U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and his Israeli counterpart Moshe Yaalon reiterated during a meeting that the two allies "will continue to work together to counter threats posed by Iran and remain prepared for a range of contingencies," said Pentagon spokesman George Little in a statement. Millions of Iranians voted to choose a new president on Friday, with prospects unclear whether the country will continue hardline diplomacy especially with the West on nuclear issues.

The Israeli defense minister said Friday there is no peaceful solution for Syria in sight, just hours after the U.S. announced a newly invigorated policy toward the two-year-old civil war. Minister Moshe Ya´alon, the former chief of staff to the Israeli Defense Forces, said he cannot predict the outcome of the internal conflict that has caused 90,000 deaths in Syria, according to U.N. estimates, despite the White House announcement Thursday that it would begin new military and diplomatic policies in response to the regime´s use of chemical weapons. 52 days after an Israeli general publicly declared that Syria has used chemical weapons against rebels, the Obama administration reached the same conclusion, and used the finding to justify announcing it would send small arms to the side of the victims. “I will not say ‘We told you so,’ only, okay, the proof is there, so there’s no more question about it,” says Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor, taking with a smile the easy part of the equation now laid before Israel. Documentary-makers in Germany have claimed that legalising prostitution has turned the country´s capital Berlin into ´Europe´s biggest brothel.´ Sex trade laws were radically liberalised by the German government in 2002 but a documentary called Sex - Made In Germany estimates that one million men pay for sex every day. The film was based on two years of research captured using hidden cameras and explores Berlin´s world of ´flat-rate´ brothels where customers pay €49 (£42) for as much sex as they want. (Snip) It is thought that around two thirds of the country´s 400,000 sex workers come from abroad.

Pope Francis has acknowledged the existence of a ´gay lobby´ inside the Vatican´s secretive administration for the first time. He also admitted the existence of a long-rumoured ´gay lobby´ in the Curia, and hinted that he might take action over the issue. In the latest black eye for the scandal-ridden State Department, a whistleblower claims she was run out of the foreign service after complaining about a consul general’s alleged office trysts with subordinates and hookers.Kerry Howard says she was bullied, harassed and forced to resign after she exposed US Consul General Donald Moore’s alleged security-threatening shenanigans in the Naples, Italy, office. As the post’s community-liaison officer, Howard was charged with keeping workplace peace and advising higher-ups on the state of morale, but when she revealed allegations about her boss, State Department officials swept it under the rug,

Five months into his second term, allies and enemies are as confounded as ever about who President Obama really is. Is he the dyed-in-the-wool liberal that his biggest supporters and critics suggest? Or is he a pragmatic, even cynical, politician who cares more for his popularity than taking risks for his ideological goals or living up to his rhetoric? Even in the short period since his reelection, Obama has provided evidence to support conflicting interpretations. His efforts to pass immigration reform, the unsuccessful push for stricter gun controls and tax hikes on high earners buttress the case for Obama-as-ideologue.

Jeb Bush says he’s not worried that his work toward comprehensive immigration reform and his ties to the GOP establishment will alienate conservatives and negatively impact a potential 2016 presidential campaign, referring to critics as “the chirpers.” “If I decide to run for office again, it will be based on what I believe, and it will be based on my record,” the former Florida governor said in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody. “And that record was one of solving problems completely from a conservative prospective.” Bush (R) pointed to his conservative

Politico’s Playbook has an excerpt from a new Ryan Lizza piece from the New Yorker that is not yet online. It contains a passage on the back-and-forth between labor and the Chamber that has a quote from a Rubio staffer that is going to raise eyebrows, to say the least: “There are American workers who, for lack of a better term, can’t cut it. There shouldn’t be a presumption that every American worker is a star performer. There are people who just can’t get it, can’t do it, don’t want to do it. And so you can’t obviously discuss that publicly.” Here is the entire context:
