| WASHINGTON — In a move aimed at shoring up support from Hispanic and progressive voters, President Barack Obama will designate the California home of labor leader Cesar Chavez as a national monument. Obama will establish the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument in Keene, Calif., during a campaign swing through California next week. The property is known as La Paz, short for Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz, or Our Lady Queen of Peace. It served as national headquarters of the United Farm Workers, as well as Chavez's home, from the early 1970s until his death in 1993.

He was going to do the same for the Frank Marshall Davis home, but they still haven't gotten the stains off the walls.

Why not? His birthday is already a state holiday in CA and TX. The U.S. Navy named a cargo ship for Chavez, although he's quoted as saying his 2 years in the Navy were “the two worst years of my life”. And, Barry Soetoro proclaimed 31 March of each year as "Cesar Chavez Day".

This is an insult to thinking Americans everywhere. Obama has no shame and no class. He snubs Israel, praises/encourages restrictions on free speech, lies at the drop of a hat, funnels billions to Muslim enemies. Now he designates the home of a liberal Mexican union leader as a USA national monument? This comes just 36 days from an election...can you say, "Pandering for the Latino vote?"
He will not do anything to build up America, but will turn his back on our Constitution, trash our economy, weaken our defenses, and embolden our enemies.
This is the type of leader only a nation with a severe death wish would elect. How his numbers remain competitive I haven't a clue.

What did Chavez really accomplish? Are farm working conditions really much better for immigrant labor than they were before he showed up? He's a feel-good story to some, I guess, but he really didn't have much lasting impact.

I think congress has to get involved here somewhere for it to actually be designated a monument - minimum is funding; no dollars no monument.

Actually back in the 1960's Chavez did not have much use for Mexican migrant farm labor that the Western growers used to compete against and fend off Chavez's United Farm Workers Union that consisted of Mexican-Americans and permanent resident alien farm workers.
At the time there was very little mass uncontrolled illegal immigration, as a huge number of Mexican farm workers entered the USA legally each growing season as "Braceros" in accordance with a very long-term international seasonal farm worker agreement between the USA and Mexico called the "Bracero Program". The way that program worked was that Mexican farm workers would be admitted to the USA each year at the beginning of the growing season to perform seasonal farm labor, and then would return to Mexico at the end of each growing season, to be admitted again the next year.
In the 1960's as a pander to Chavez and the unions, President Johnson ended the "Bracero Program" essentially shutting out the Mexican farm workers who could no longer enter the USA legally to perform seasonal farm work. At the start of the next growing season those Mexican farm workers simply entered the USA illegally with the help of the Western growers and farm labor contractors who had been employing them since about the First World War era. That was the real genesis for the massive out of control illegal immigration situation that the USA is experiencing today.

Hillary Clinton´s return to the living was almost flawless. Almost. She unveiled her Twitter account (young and with-it), and referred knowingly to the pantsuit (mature and self-aware). She didn´t look tan (that would be too "Real Housewives of New Jersey") but seemed rested (that´s what almost six months of downtime will do for you) and ready (returning to her animating issues of girls and early childhood through her Too Small to Fail initiative). She picked a rocking photo (dark shades, in the bulkhead seat of her secretary of state airplane, thumbing her BlackBerry).

President Barack Obama raised the prospect Wednesday that Europe might need to adjust its economic policies to tackle high youth unemployment and make sure that some countries don´t "lose a generation." Obama warned during his visit to Berlin that, while he was confident the euro area´s leaders will resolve their debt crisis, austerity and structural reforms must not cause policymakers to lose sight of the main goal: Improving people´s lives. Unemployment in the group of 17 European Union countries that use the euro, which is stuck in recession, has shot up to a record 12.2 percent.

Officially, the U.S. Government does not negotiate with terrorists (except for those occasions when it holds formal talks with them). Such is the case for the Afghan Taliban, which was declared a FTO (Foreign Terrorist Organization) by U.S. President George W. Bush. This week Obama Administration officials are meeting in Doha, Qatar with their “respected” adversaries in face to face peace negotiations. U.S. diplomats, eager to legitimize the Taliban, have agreed that the Taliban can open an embassy of sorts in Qatar. The war against the Taliban has been a trillion-dollar, decade-long, colossal failure.

MICHELLE Obama dazzled Dublin with her grace and charm, and almost outshone her husband in Belfast with her eloquence, sounding every inch the professional politician. And that is exactly what could be on the cards for her.(snip)She would be a formidable candidate. A lawyer and an intellectual powerhouse, who excelled at Princeton and Harvard Law School, she first met her husband when she mentored him at a Chicago law firm. She lacks political experience. But so did another first lady before she went on to become a US senator for New York. Hillary Clinton has already blazed the trail

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says he´ll "probably" make a decision about running for president sometime in 2015. The Republican, who is seeking a second term in November as governor, has taken heat recently for appearances with President Obama and former President Bill Clinton. Christie said on MSNBC´s Morning Joe program that he´s not concerned with how appearances with high-profile democrats might affect his political future. "My job is to do my job," Christie said, as he defended his appearance last week at the Clinton Global Initiative

Having paid his debt to society after his 2010 arrest, he is now ready to pick up where he left off in his crusade to expose corruption in the halls of power, beginning with footage that shows shady practices in the government-subsidized cellphone program. On Monday night, family, friends from his Rutgers days and members of Team O´Keefe squeezed into a club in West SoHo

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) has signed her name to an effort to draft Hillary Clinton into the 2016 presidential race, becoming the first sitting member of Congress to do so. The Ready for Hillary super PAC announced McCaskill as its latest big-name supporter on Tuesday morning. McCaskill in 2008 supported President Obama over Clinton in the primary, but said earlier this year that she hopes Clinton will run again. “Hillary Clinton had to give up her political operation while she was making us proud, representing us around the world as an incredible

A group of whistleblowers, including a number of aviation experts, have come forward in a new documentary to claim that the official explanation for the crash of TWA Flight 800 was wrong and a gas tank explosion did not bring down the flight off the coast of Long Island 17 years ago. However, the six whistleblowers, all part of the original investigation team, stopped short of saying the plane was shot down. Flight 800, a Boeing 747, had just taken off from JFK airport with 230 people aboard on July 17, 1996 enroute to Paris when it exploded

An attorney whose firm represents two Benghazi whistleblowers said Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, lied to the Senate when he said there was never a “stand down” order during the Benghazi attack on Sept. 11, 2012. “What was fascinating is that he explained his lie to them,” Joe DiGenova, an attorney representing one of the whistleblowers, told CNSNews.com. “He actually said they were sent to Tripoli. They were needed in Benghazi,” said DiGenova, a former U.S. attorney, now with the Washington firm of DiGenova & Toensing.

Likening religious schools to segregation--a racist system that forced blacks to attend different schools and use different facilities than whites in the American South--President Barack Obama told a town hall meeting for youth in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Monday that there should not be Catholic and Protestant schools because such schools cause division. "Because issues like segregated schools and housing, lack of jobs and opportunity--symbols of history that are a source of pride for some and pain for others--these are not tangential to peace; they’re essential to it,"

Listening to Barack Obama give his speech in Belfast on Monday, it was hard not to stifle a yawn. I kept waiting for the part when he would say something interesting, but, about three quarters of the way through, realised it wasn’t going to come. Judging from television pictures some of his young audience felt the same, after the initial rush of euphoria of receiving the rock star president in their midst had passed. This is not surprising, for we had already heard this number about the inspirational role of the Northern Ireland peace process and the Emerald Isle’s

This is the thirtieth anniversary of the publication of How Democracies Perish, an analysis of the spread of world communism by Jean-François Revel, one of freedom´s most serious French defenders since Tocqueville. At the heart of this work, Revel details "The Tools of Communist Expansion," among which the most relevant for understanding our current situation comes in Chapter 16, "Ideological Warfare and Disinformation." The profound simplicity of Revel´s nuts and bolts account of totalitarianism´s Cold War advance, far from being obsolete

The May 17 deposition where she made the alleged admissions is part of a $1.2 million lawsuit brought by Lisa Jackson, the former manager of a Savannah, Georgia, restaurant run by Deen and her brother Bubba Hiers. Jackson alleges in the suit that Deen used the N-word at the restaurant and that Hiers sexually harassed her. According to the reports, in the deposition, Deen replied “Yes, of course,”

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.
