Legendary New York Times editor Abe Rosenthal once fired a newly hired reporter when he learned she’d had an intimate relationship with one of the people she reported on at her previous newspaper. Michael Goodwin explains what happened next: Word of the incident spread quickly through the newsroom, and several female reporters complained to Rosenthal. They argued that the woman was treated unfairly, at which point Abe raised his finger for silence and said something to this effect: ‘I don’t care if you f–k an elephant on your personal time, but then you can’t cover the circus for the paper.’ The Times

Trump at NATO: ‘Immigration

U.S. President Donald J. Trump has told press at the NATO summit on Thursday that he warned the defence union that “immigration is taking over Europe”. “I told them today that the EU better be careful because immigration is taking over Europe and I said that loud and clear,” President Trump told a press conference in Brussels, Belgium. “You see what’s going on throughout the world with immigration. I probably — if not partially — won an election because of immigration,” President Trump said, observing that the issue of mass, uncontrolled migration is inspiring voters in Europe — and the United States

Reuters contended on Wednesday that Chinese media coverage of the trade dispute with America has been relatively muted, and it was by design because the government has instructed its media outlets not to say anything that would enrage U.S. President Donald Trump. The claim was sourced to “several sources with knowledge of the matter” who claimed to have seen a “memo based on a set of directives issued verbally by government officials.” “When exposing and criticizing American words and actions, be careful not to link it to Trump and instead to aim it at the U.S. government,” Chinese state media organs were

How to maintain the republic?
Originalist judges like Brett Kavanaugh

The best argument for the necessity of constitutional originalists on the Supreme Court is right before our eyes. You can see it in the news, in our political discourse; you hear the shrieks of it everywhere: It’s the hysteria of the American left over the loss of power over the nation’s highest court. And now they’ve finally become quite unhinged. President Donald Trump’s nomination of conservative judge Brett Kavanaugh has pushed them over the edge. Not all liberals are hysterical. Some are trying to be intellectually honest, in thanking those most responsible for Trump being able to shape the court:

Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh incurred tens of thousands of dollars of credit card debt buying baseball tickets over the past decade and at times reported liabilities that could have exceeded the value of his cash accounts and investment assets, according to a review of Kavanaugh’s financial disclosures and information provided by the White House. White House spokesman Raj Shah told The Washington Post that Kavanaugh built up the debt by buying Washington Nationals season tickets and tickets for playoff games for himself and a “handful” of friends. Shah said some of the debts were also for home improvements.

When Donald Trump started running for the Republican nomination for president in June 2015, he began by attacking the Republican establishment in Washington, and he began his attack by calling the establishment "the swamp." His real target was the permanent government and its enablers in the legal, financial, diplomatic and intelligence communities in Washington. These entities hover around power centers no matter which party is in power. Beneath the swamp, Trump argued, lies the deep state. (Snip) On Monday night, he rewarded the swamp denizens and deep state outliers by nominating one of their own to the Supreme Court.

Donald Trump has said he "believes in Nato" after conflicting reports he was threatening to pull the US out of the alliance. In a press conference following a crisis meeting among Nato members, the US president said he was satisfied by members´ commitment to increase spending. He said that allies were probably worried because the US was not being treated fairly, but now it was. “Countries are going to start upping their commitments… I let them know I was extremely unhappy with what was happening, and they have substantially upped their commitments.” "It all came together at the end. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement has ignited a competition in Big Media for apocalyptic hot-takes on how a marginally more conservative Supreme Court will destroy America. CNN’s senior legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin seems bent on taking home the trophy for the most molten meltdown. Toobin’s most recent rave, to the network’s Anderson Cooper, was that the stakes are higher on judicial confirmations today because “[w]hen the Constitution was written in the late eighteenth century, people were expected to die in their 50s. Supply-Side Economics: Democrats scoffed at Republicans who said the Trump tax cuts would at least partially pay for themselves through higher economic growth. But it looks like the GOP had it right all along, as revenues climb. The latest monthly budget report from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office finds that revenues from federal income taxes were $76 billion higher in the first half of this year, compared with the first half of 2017. That´s a 9% jump, even though the lower income tax withholding schedules went into effect in February. The CBO says the gain "largely reflects increases in wages and salaries." For

Congressional Democrats released a list of questions Wednesday that their Republican counterparts asked of Peter Strzok, the former FBI official who sent anti-Trump text messages while working on the Russia investigation. Democrats published the questions in an attempt to force Republicans to release a transcript of Strzok’s 10-plus hour closed-door testimony before the House Judiciary and House Oversight Committees on June 27. Strzok is scheduled to appear before both committees for an open hearing on Thursday. While Democrats complained that the questions show the GOP lawmakers’ lines of inquiry appear in line with the questions that Trump supporters have raised

Get out the fainting couches! President Trump is in Europe, and once again he is saying the unsayable. The occasion is the NATO summit that began today in Brussels. Trump fired an opening salvo that included two themes, as reported by Bloomberg. The first is that Germany, in particular, undermines the alliance’s defenses against Russia by being too dependent on Russian natural gas: “It’s very sad when Germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with Russia where we’re supposed to be guarding against Russia and Germany goes out and pays billions and billions of dollars a year to Russia,” Trump

Forbes reported earlier on Wednesday that Schnatter used the n-word on a conference call in May. The call was specifically designed as a role-playing exercise to prevent future public-relations disasters. “Colonel Sanders called blacks n—–s,” Schnatter said, before complaining that Sanders never faced public backlash.

President Donald Trump will have to learn some new names in London. Earlier this week, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and David Davis, who led Britain’s arrangements for exiting the EU, resigned out of dissatisfaction with the government’s plans for Brexit. On the surface, this looks like a bad time for Trump to arrive. Actually, it’s ideal. The resignations happened because much of the British government — including Prime Minister Theresa May — treat Brexit as a problem to be managed, not an opportunity to be exploited. Most Tory activists want to leave the EU, as does a narrow majority of Conservative Members
