Shares in ZTE Corp. fell 42 percent Tuesday in Hong Kong on their first trading day after the Chinese telecoms equipment maker agreed to pay a $1 billion US penalty to the U.S. government and replace its top managers. Shares resumed trading following a two-month suspension after Washington accused state-owned ZTE in April of reneging on a settlement of charges it violated export rules by selling U.S. technology to Iran and North Korea. (Snip) The company admitted in 2017 exporting telecoms equipment to Iran and North Korea in violation of U.S. regulations. Washington said ZTE promised to discipline employees

In a blow to Israel’s right to self-defense the United Nations General Assembly voted not to condemn Hamas violence and in favor of international protection for the Palestinian people along the Gaza border, in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. The dramatic three hour debate ended on Wednesday evening with resounding applause for the Palestinians as a resolution that censured Israeli actions in Gaza with 45 abstentions and no mention of Hamas. An American amendment condemning Hamas was struck down, even though it had a slim majority, 62-58 and 42 abstentions. The vote just barely fell short of the required two-thirds

A UAE military vessel has been attacked by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea off the coast of Hodeidah, according to senior Yemeni-Houthi military commanders. US officials have confirmed the ship was attacked by Houthi rebels and suffered serious damage. Al-Masdr News reported that the vessel has now sunk. The vessel was located off the coast of Hodeidah, which is a strategic port that the Saudi-led coalition have been targeting. Hodeidah port was evacuated earlier this week due to an imminent attack launched by Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Salem Jaffer Baobaid, the deputy country manager of the international

President Donald Trump said a military draw down in South Korea was ´never discussed´ when he met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un in Singapore on Tuesday. The president said there was no t*t-for-tat deal with Pyongyang where there is denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula in exchange for an end to U.S. military exercises with South Korea. ´No, it is not drawing down at all,´ Trump told Fox News when asked about that part of his agreement with Kim. ´In fact, honestly, it was never discussed. I am sure he would like that. It was never on the table. We sort of

Populist conservative author and columnist Pat Buchanan says President Trump’s “America First” defense and fair trade agenda is bringing an “end of the ‘New World Order.´” In an interview with talk radio host Laura Ingraham, Buchanan said Trump’s latest moves at the G7 Summit — where he blasted foreign leaders’ defense and trade policies for draining the U.S. — were the beginning of the end for a world order propped up by globalist free trade and defense efforts. Buchanan said: What’s really going on is the end of the old world order from which the United States has benefited least

Mark Sanford blew up his marriage and became a national laughingstock when he sneaked off his job as South Carolina governor for a tryst with his Argentine lover. After he forsook his presidential ambitions and spent time in political purgatory, voters forgave Sanford’s trespass and, in 2013, elected him their representative in Congress. But on Tuesday, Sanford was tossed from office by his Republican constituents for committing a far graver sin: criticizing President Trump. With his bulldozing personality, Trump has transformed the GOP from a party of anti-communist cold warriors to one that coos over North Korea’s communist dictator, from a

The Federal Reserve approved another rate hike on Wednesday, bumping up the nation’s benchmark interest rate by one-quarter of a point. It’s the second time Fed Chairman Jerome Powell has raised rates since he took over the nation’s central bank in February. The increase, announced at the conclusion of the Federal Open Market Committee´s two-day monetary policy meeting, continues the Fed´s cautious approach to steering the economy away from potential inflation while balancing a number of newer geopolitical risks that could threaten America´s nine-year growth streak. The new short-term interest rate now sits at a range of

According to Bicycling.com, the modern carbon-fiber bike is “a technological marvel” based on its superior strength over traditional metal bikes, at a fraction of the weight. So why isn’t everyone hopping on one of these top-notch bikes to pedal around town? Two reasons – the cost is insane and, say the experts at Bicycling.com, carbon-fiber can be a manufacturing nightmare. Typical problems mostly relate to quality control, in a production environment that requires lots of labor and precision, which is why the Silicon Valley startup Arevo intends to upend the process with 3D printing. The new low-yield nuclear warheads that President Trump wants to add to the American arsenal look poised to receive backing from Congress, despite an outcry from anti-nuclear advocates and attempts by Democratic lawmakers to defund or limit their introduction. The addition of the warheads to ballistic-missile submarines has become the most controversial element of the Trump administration’s new nuclear weapons strategy. Critics say the smaller impact of such “battlefield nuclear weapons” makes them more tempting to use in a crisis — therefore lowering the threshold of nuclear war. But the Trump administration, led by

Ridiculous Bay Area housing costs may

A harbinger of the absurdly high cost of housing in the San Francisco Bay Area may be visible in the region´s maternity wings. San Francisco is a city of few children. You´re more likely to see a French bulldog roaming Alamo Square Park than packs of kids frolicking among the Victorians. The lack of youngsters is indicative of a larger issue in the city: the absurdly high cost of housing. According to a new study, when housing prices go up, the birth rate goes down. It's a trend economists noticed during the 2008 recession — the number of babies being born in the U.S. plummeted after millions of people lost their homes and

Just hours after President Trump had concluded his historic summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, the consensus from the mainstream media was that the whole event was a big nothingburger. Mr. Trump won no hard concessions, the MSM said — nothing concrete on denuclearization, on human rights violations. In fact, said the talking heads and political pundits, the things Mr. Kim pledged to undertake in a multipoint agreement signed by both leaders have all been agreed to before. What’s more, said the MSM, Mr. Trump had just legitimized Mr. Kim by deigning to meet with him, elevating his status to that of a world

An hourly wage of $22.10 is now what´s needed to afford a typical, modest two-bedroom rental nationwide, according to a new report released Wednesday, and most renters don’t earn nearly that much. In its report, the National Low Income Housing Coalition estimated that the typical renter instead earns just $16.88, meaning that for most the average “affordable” rental housing, as defined by the government, is not within financial reach. The new estimate of $22.10 is up almost $1 from the $21.21 estimate a year earlier. In many big cities, the gap between what people earn and what would be needed

Copenhagen, Denmark — The man at the center of a sex-abuse and financial crimes scandal that is tarnishing the academy that awards the Nobel Prize in Literature was charged on Tuesday with two counts of rape of a woman in 2011. He has denied this and other sex abuse allegations. In April, the Swedish Academy said an internal investigation into sexual misconduct allegations found that
